Hello, I apologize if this is the wrong place to comment, but just
wanted to add I am seeing the same problem, except with an ATI driver,
not intel. If it helps:
KDE 4.5.1 (latest as of writing)
With desktop effects OFF:
glxgears: 25,000 frames in 5 seconds
fgl_glxgears: 4500 frames in 5

I have the meerkat beta livecd in my drive; I booted from it with
TORAM=yes.
One apt-get update resulted in six separate popups asking if I would
like to open it with the package manager.
A second apt-get update got another six popups.

Managed to solve it removing read permission on libpulse.so.0.12.2 and
libpulse-simple.so.0.0.3 (in /usr/lib32)
