[Bug 780405] [NEW] Floppy is not mounted/opened

2011-05-10 Thread sergey
Public bug reported:

While trying to access floppy drive, the led shines for a short while,
then nothing happens. Neither from Places-Floppy Drive, nor from Places-
Computer-Floppy drive.

Manual mounting helped.

sudo mount -t msdos /dev/fd0u1440 /media/floppy

Resulted in the appearance of floppy icon in the computer. Access
(copying, deleting) was possible only from command line and as a root.
Umount was possible only for the root user.

[Bug 609861] Re: Process list shoud have filter by process name

2011-05-10 Thread James M. Roche
I guess this is technically a feature request, not a bug, but I've been
annoyed about this for some time. It's a much-needed functionality that
would be easy to implement and would perhaps double the program's
usefulness.

Are the dev's afraid I'd be 'confused' by such an advanced capability,
and that my workflow would be 'simpler' and more 'intuitive' if I'm
forced to manually scroll through an enormous list to find what I'm
looking for? I still like Gnome/Ubuntu more than the alternatives, but
sometimes... :O

[Bug 423481] Re: Banshee refuses to play internet radio stream

2011-05-10 Thread David Hollander
Colin Keenan wrote on 2011-04-08: #10
 http://radiokstreams.cce.umn.edu:8256/listen.pls

Works with Banshee 2.0 on 11.04.

This does not work for me. Banshee 2.0.0 on Ubuntu 11.04 64bit.
Additionally, all radio stations at http://www.di.fm/ do not work.
Example: http://listen.di.fm/public3/minimal.pls

Chromium downloads the file. Totem movie player can open and start the
stream fine. However, Banshee cannot. So if you want to stream internet
radio in Banshee either to A) have it play all your music or B) listen
to internet radio while something is simultaneously playing in Movie
Player, this is not possible.

** Description changed:

I demoed this bug to didrocks, and he agreed it looks bad. Especially
since nautilus also draws the shadow for the panel, you get this ugly
little stripe sliding past. The problem arose because in compiz 0.9
- because windows set to show on all desktops slide along with regular
- windows by default, where in compiz 0.8 they remained stationary by
- default. all you have to do is add title=x-nautilus-desktop to ccsm
- Desktop Wall Viewport Switching Non Sliding Windows.

[Bug 780408] [NEW] Resume from suspend leads to dead keyboard and screen.

2011-05-10 Thread Helias Fotiadis
Public bug reported:

There has to be a problem with the Suspend function. After I resume, the
computer blacks out. Nothing is working, and by nothing I mean the mouse
pointer, the screen and the keyboard. (Sometimes, before blacking out,
the computer actually shows me a window asking for my user password, but
even when I input it RIGHT, the computer just blacks out again, making
me shut it down from the power button.) Also. there is one more thing
that happens. After I press the power button again to turn on the
computer, as soon as I am logged in, I don't have any sound (the sound
bar is empty) but, oddly, when I press the hotkey to increase the sound
, the bar is restored to maximum with just ONE hit of the button. This
has to be the best description I can give to this problem.

[Bug 780410] [NEW] cfengine can't access logfile when running as non-root

2011-05-10 Thread Andrey Bondarenko
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: cfengine3

The problem found in package version 3.0.5+dfsg-1 from Natty.

When running as non-root user, cf-agent complains Can't open lock-log
file. The error happens because it tries to work with files in
/var/log, but doesn't have enough permissions.

You may reproduce the issue from a non-root account as follows:

rm -rf ~/.cfagent
mkdir ~/.cfagent ~/.cfagent/bin ~/.cfagent/inputs
cp /usr/sbin/cf-* ~/.cfagent/bin/
cat - ~/.cfagent/inputs/promises.cf EOF
# -*- coding: utf-8; mode: cfengine -*-
body common control
{
  bundlesequence = { test };
}

bundle agent test
{
commands:
  /bin/date ;
}
EOF
env LANG=C cf-agent; echo $?

The commands will produce something like that:

Q: .../bin/date: Tue May 10 15:40:36 YEKST 2011
I: Last 1 QUOTed lines were generated by promiser /bin/date
Can't open lock-log file /var/log/cf3.hostname.runlog

[Bug 778052] Re: [2.6.38] Attached Verbatim USB-stick results in high CPU

2011-05-10 Thread Yan Li
I'm still not sure how to trigger this issue on my HP EliteBook 2540p.
This morning Debian delivered a new kernel 2.6.38-2-amd64 (Version:
2.6.38-5) and with it I seems can't see this issue any more. But it is
also possible that this bug is only triggered after the machine has run
for a long time.

2011-05-10 Thread Robert Premuz
I'd like to confirm that this bug exists in Ubuntu 11.04 with
Linux 2.6.38-9.43 on a Toshiba nb300.

As a workaround I set
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT=quiet splash nolapic_timer clocksource=jiffies
in /etc/default/grub and then run
sudo update-grub
sudo reboot

Note that the right option name is nolapic_timer, not nolapci_timer as
mentioned above.

[Bug 580183] Re: asus eeepc 1001px in/out jack not functionnal and screen microphone

2011-05-10 Thread Nevyn
Have got the internal microphone working a treat with 2.6.32-31. Needed
to upgrade to alsa 1.0.24. Have attached my first packaging attempt.
Haven't quite deployed yet - looking to tweak volume settings.

Still haven't gotten the headphone/microphone port working properly
though I believe (unconfirmed) headphones at the very least work.

Unfortunately, this also means I'm going to have to compile for each
kernel release. Don't want to use dkms in this case as the compile time
is fairly high.

So linux-image-2.6.32-31 is required. This is for Lucid. Could solve
other sound card issues? Wasn't discriminant when compiling.

[Bug 773740] Re: 11.04 --DARK SCREEN--Need a lamp to see

2011-05-10 Thread Helias Fotiadis
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 765438 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/765438

I reported the problem in this address:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/780408
When I run the 'xset dpms force off command', it does not suspend the computer;
it just switches the backlight off. I then press th sudo setpci -s 00:02.0
F4.B=00 command and restore the backlight. That happens on the standard kernel.
I haven't tested it in the kamal kernel yet. I will let you know as soon as I
do.

Re: [Bug 646724] Re: not all files show up in files-place

2011-05-10 Thread Seif Lotfy
I am on it already :)

On Tue, May 10, 2011 at 10:57 AM, KarlRelton
karllinuxtest.rel...@ntlworld.com wrote:

Wrt to comment #23, I remember over a year ago in blog-posts or wherever
some communication between Seif of Zeitgeist fame and the Tracker people
about integration/linking together. There was talk of one of them
 pushing events to the other.

Certainly if Tracker pushed an event to Zeitgeist everytime it
'discovered' a new file, that would certainly help Zeitgeist to be aware
of alot more of the user's filesystem. If the user is using Tracker,
then resource-wise the user would be no worse off, since Tracker is
already doing the crawling monitoring anyway.

However, of course Tracker itself is configured by the user to NOT crawl
their whole filesystem, so for some users it is arguably still
incomplete (though it would be good enough for my own uses).

 Bug description:
The Unity interface, with its files-place feature for user access to
  files/documents etc. is really great.

However there is a problem since the search feature relies wholly on
zeitgeist (AFAIK), in the zeitgeist is not tracking everything.

E.g. in openoffice, I create a new file (or open an existing one) from
within openoffice itself. This file does not show up, presumably
because openoffice does not (yet) push its activity to zeitgeist.

I guess any number of other programs could suffer the same problem.

For the average user, this is surely going to be confusing. They will
create documents via legitimate means ('New ...' buttons in their
applications), and then expect to be able to search for them in the
  Unity files-place interface.

To avoid this confusion I would guess there really needs to be a
filesystem watcher on the home dir (or key folders within it) so that
zeitgeist is aware of activity caused by non-zeitgeist-aware
  applications.

[Bug 646724] Re: not all files show up in files-place

2011-05-10 Thread Christoph Buchner
wrt to tracker: I actually didn't want to push this discussion towards
tracker/beagle integration itself, I just wanted to point out that
obviously, indexing the relevant files _and their contents_ is already
possible and reasonable performance-wise. Consequently, I don't think it
should be too much of a performance hog to maintain a proper index
(without file's contents, too boot) for search in ZG; that's what the
tracker/beagle people have been doing for years, after all.

[Bug 780410] Re: cfengine can't access logfile when running as non-root

2011-05-10 Thread Andrey Bondarenko
The issue was introduced by Debian specific patch debian/patches/fhs-

for non-root users is ~/.cfengine and FHS rules can't be applied to this

if you could briefly tell me which steps to do I really would

Nonetheless I know how to use the commandline etc.

For now I simply uninstalled the gnome-orca package via synaptics since
i don't need text2speech at all. But I will reinstall it if necessary to
perform the tests you tell me.

[Bug 754000] Re: 3 finger touch interferes with 3 finger click (middle click)

2011-05-10 Thread Daniel van Vugt
Fixed (in xserver-xorg-input-synaptics)! The patch to go in
debian/patches is attached...

  * Number of active touches can be less than number of active fingers/contacts
so ask grail for the real number of fingers when clicking. This fixes
3-finger clicks (middle click) when there are geis/grail clients active
such as Unity. (LP: #754000)

Re: [Bug 646724] Re: not all files show up in files-place

2011-05-10 Thread Seif Lotfy
There is a difference between Tracker and Zeitgeist:
Tracker indexes stuff in the XDG directories only per default which means it
will only index stuff in Music, Documents, etc...
It will not cover a Directory Foo or anything in it. (it makes optimal for
people with lots of files in the default directories)
Zeitgeist indexes stuff you touch. Which means it does not index stuff you
never interacted with (it makes it optimal for fresh installs). Plus
Zeitgeist allows you to sort through receny, frequency, relevancy and
resemblance to the search string.

I am creating a zeitgeist extension that if Tracker is installed it will ask
Tracker for results and attach them to the zeitgeist results and return them
to the client. We have a working prototype. I am not happy with the solution
but its fast enough...
Stay tuned.

On Tue, May 10, 2011 at 11:48 AM, Christoph Buchner
646...@bugs.launchpad.net wrote:

wrt to tracker: I actually didn't want to push this discussion towards
tracker/beagle integration itself, I just wanted to point out that
obviously, indexing the relevant files _and their contents_ is already
possible and reasonable performance-wise. Consequently, I don't think it
should be too much of a performance hog to maintain a proper index
(without file's contents, too boot) for search in ZG; that's what the
tracker/beagle people have been doing for years, after all.

[Bug 773740] Re: 11.04 --DARK SCREEN--Need a lamp to see

2011-05-10 Thread Helias Fotiadis
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 765438 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/765438

Here is the problem in detail. The sound problem occurs in both kernels
and with the i915.alse_backlight=1 command upon boot. On the standard
kernel the computer resumes with a single button press, I get a screen
without backlight and the mouse cursor swimming in that screen with no
purpose since there is nothing to click on but blackness. On the kamal-
without-the-i915.alse_backlight=1-command kernel, I get nothing, not
even the mouse pointer. The difference is that I cannot resume with a
single key press; I have to press the power button to resume. Instead
when I press other keys I see that the flashing orange light on my
laptop(which indicates that I am in suspend mode) corresponds to my
press and it flashes in synchronization with my presses. Same goes with
the kamal-with-the-i915.alse_backlight=1-command. The same apply as
before but this time there is a swimming-in-blackness mouse pointer as
in case 1. The orange light issue still applies here.

[Bug 646724] Re: not all files show up in files-place

2011-05-10 Thread Christoph Buchner
Ah ic, thanks for the clarification.
Would it be possible to create a feature where one manually points ZG, say, to
a directory (or, e.g. a separate data partition), and ZG would index the given
directory's contents once? Thus, ZG would circumvent the problem of not knowing
about stuff you haven't accessed yet (think fresh install, but separate data
partition), and would be able to deliver more meaningful results more quickly.

Interestingly, this works when adding it as a radio station under the Radio
source, but does not work when trying to use Open location.

[Bug 780424] [NEW] Xorg unresponsive after screensaver unlock with Dual Head

2011-05-10 Thread Druid
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xorg

As background I'm running multi-GPU multi-session multi-head with 3
screens on two NVIDIA GPU Quadro NVS 290 (G86GL) cards (one on one, two
on the other). Machine is a quad core with 8G ram and 8G swap.
Individual gnome sessions on each screen (ie I can't transfer programs
between screens and each screen has full menus).

Occasionally after unlocking my mouse cursor rapidly flickers between
screens and the machine is totally unresponsive at the console.

Logging in via ssh and I can see load and cpu usage rapidly increases,
memory usage also goes through the roof until all memory and swap is
consumed at which point the oom-killer kicks in (or possibly Xorg
crashes) , kills Xorg and I can log back in (with my session lost).

In the mistaken assumption that I didn't have enough swap I increased it
(from 2G to 10G) all this did was allow the machine to be a little bit
more responsive for longer but Xorg still continued to consume memory,
last time it got to 11.2G of virtual and a load average of 24 before I
rebooted the machine. As a comparison, right now Xorg has 153m with load
averages all at ~0.5.

While I realise this may not include enough as is this is a reasonably
regular (and very annoying) bug for me, if any further details can be
collected at the time please let me know, I can (within reason) run
anything as needed.

2011-05-10 Thread Helias Fotiadis
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 765438 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/765438

Should we transfer this discussion to the proper page
(https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/780408)?
Because I think we are in the danger of going off-topic here. :-P
What about my backlight problems? Even with th i915.alse_backlight-1 command
there are some minor problems on my screen. It sis still stretched. Sometimes
the typing cursor stops flashing or it even completely disappears. Sometimes
some parts of an actice window (like mozilla) disappear revealing my desktop
background below them. Last but not least I get a little trembling of certain
parts of the screen when I e.g. launch a program on the upper panel.

I'm just asking for a bright screen when I am logging in my computer that is
also fully adjustable with fully working hotkeys. I'm just asking for
normality. Is it too much? :-)

Oh, it shouldn't be a suggestion. I think it is the same bug and I

BTW, my Natty Desktop (not a VM) is not affected.

[Bug 762918] Re: Natty Screensaver freezes system after some period of inactivity

2011-05-10 Thread MikeCz
More info: after several tries, with only the Unity desktop running and
letting the machine sit for approx 20 minutes with the lid closed, the
screen kept flickering between the unlock screen and the blank desktop.
I ran a ps -eaf from a virtual termial and saw a line related to the
lock screen, but did not write down the command for the process (will
try to duplicate it again and capture that.

It too my unlock password, and it stopped flickering and went to the
blank desktop, and after killing gnome-screensaver and Compiz I had to
reboot the machine (via init 6).

[Bug 780430] [NEW] support a BYOBU_DISABLE environment variable, such that ssh clients could globally disable byobu-launch-by-default

2011-05-10 Thread Dustin Kirkland
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: byobu

This bug affects:
 * byobu
 * openssh-server
 * openssh-client

We would need to whitelist a new variable, BYOBU_DISABLE, on both the
SSH client and server, and allow that to be transmitted from the ssh
client through to the session on the ssh server.

We also need byobu-launch to respect that variable.

[Bug 754234] Re: vlc crashing compiz

2011-05-10 Thread Rémi Denis-Courmont
I am sorry, but I find your bug report very confuse and I am unable to
even understand what symptoms you are trying to describe. Please explain
CLEARLY what you expect and what you get instead.

It seems you broke your VLC UI configuration though. You can reset it by
running:
$ vlc --reset-config --reset-plugins-cache

Re: [Bug 741930] Re: [natty] nvidia binary packages for older cards - dependencies not met

2011-05-10 Thread Pawel Jasnos
I'd say a simpler but still useful thing would be to make sure that if
some hardware isn't compatible at the time of release because a
proprietary driver is required (and that's the situation here - Unity
doesn't work on Nouveau), then a big, red note of that should be made
in the release notes prompt encouraging for upgrade, so that people
can wait until Nvidia or any other vendor provides updated driver.

Alternatively, the upgrading script should warn user about such
incompatibilities at the start of the process, allowing them to easily
cancel.

for the next Ubuntu release, if the nvidia-96 driver are not compatible
with xorg again, it's possible add a legacy xorg to the repository?

 something like:
xserver-xorg-core  (new version, for the driver compatible)
xserver-xorg-core-1.9 (legacy, for the driver that not support new xorg)

then the nvidia-96 package require the legacy xorg instead of the new
 one
