When running as non-root user, cf-agent complains Can't open lock-log
file. The error happens because it tries to work with files in
/var/log, but doesn't have enough permissions.
I'm still not sure how to trigger this issue on my HP EliteBook 2540p.
This morning Debian delivered a new kernel 2.6.38-2-amd64 (Version:
2.6.38-5) and with it I seems can't see this issue any more. But it is
also possible that this bug is only triggered after the machine has run
for a long time.

I'd like to confirm that this bug exists in Ubuntu 11.04 with
Linux 2.6.38-9.43 on a Toshiba nb300.
As a workaround I set

I agree with Martin. The lack of text in application-switcher and
'expose' is very annoying and productivity bottleneck; specially for
people like me who work with too many apps at the same time. Many times
I have to actually switch to a window only to find out it was not the
one I needed!

Also the output of 'pactl list' when the bug occurs would be nice...

Does it work any better if you run VLC as:
$ vlc --no-embedded-video
?
Can you attach the X11 properties of the buggy fullscreen window (run
xprop then click on the window)?

and the screen dosn't go off after 15 minutes. The system hangs every 10
_seconds_ for only one second.

Having a related problem.
Firefox download window opens and is locked to the top left hand corner
of the desktop with no way to close it.

I am sorry, but I find your bug report very confuse and I am unable to
even understand what symptoms you are trying to describe. Please explain
CLEARLY what you expect and what you get instead.
It seems you broke your VLC UI configuration though. You can reset it by
running:
$ vlc --reset-config
I'd say a simpler but still useful thing would be to make sure that if
some hardware isn't compatible at the time of release because a
proprietary driver is required (and that's the situation here - Unity
doesn't work on Nouveau), then a big, red note of that should be made
in the release notes
