Please notice error can be seen only when mangling is off i.e. all file names are shown unmodified. That mode is absolutely needed. Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. It looks like another process on your system had a lock on /var/cache/debconf/config.dat. This is normally a transient situation and should resolve itself. Simply performing the update again should solve this issue. If it does not fuser -v will return the locking process if any. Lucid ships perl 5.10.1-8ubuntu2.1; however looking at the error it would appear that you are using a localised perl 5.14.0 installation in /usr/local/perl5. This is the most likely cause of your issue as the @INC path does not include the path to the required Debconf module. Public bug reported: Binary package hint: cloud-init The EC2/UEC images currently allow users to ssh to root@ but do not give the user shell access. Instead, a helpful message is displayed to the user explaining they need to ssh to ubuntu@ and they are disconnected after 10 seconds. This is done with the following prefix in /root/.ssh/authorized_keys: command=echo 'Please login as the user \ubuntu\ rather than the user \root\.';echo;sleep 10 ssh-rsa ... The goal here is to prevent the user from having any serious access at all through root@ and to just be a helpful pointer for people who assume all EC2 AMIs are set up to allow ssh to root@ Users may change the ssh keys associated with /home/ubuntu/.ssh/authorized_keys and not know about or forget about the fact that there is some access also granted through /root/.ssh/authorized_keys The way that the /root/.ssh/authorized_keys file is currently implemented, an authorized user is blocked from shell access, but is granted some other permissions like doing port forwarding through the instance to anywhere that instance can connect. Hosts it connects to would also perceive the connection as coming from the instance. These additional permissions should be blocked in /root/.ssh/authorized_keys by adding qualifiers like: no-port-forwarding,no-agent-forwarding,no-X11-forwarding,no-pty These particular directives are based on best practices using subversion command= with ssh. Chris, No, apt did not remove anything nor did suggest it. I did the upgrade with synaptic, so nothing wrong about that (no errors). There was only the notification to upgrade xorg-server to the version 1.10.2 first, which is a new dependency. But as I mentioned, I downgraded the mesa back to 7.10.2 and all is OK now. The package libgl1-mesa-glx 7.10.3-0ubuntu1 breaks: fglrx (= 2:8.850-0ubuntu1) nvidia-173 (= 173.14.30-0ubuntu2) nvidia-current (= 270.41.19-0ubuntu1) However, as I said above, I use nvidia-current_275.09.07, which is the latest stable in Oneiric official repos. Public bug reported: Binary package hint: chromium-browser I'm not sure if it was a GNOME or an Ubuntu decision, but removing the ability in the Preferred Applications GNOME capplet to use a customized command-line to open HTTP URL links in a preferred web browser in a customized way, _really_ irritates me. I guess this is a two part issue: 1) that Chromium apparently can't be screwed to give users the option to open URLs in new windows, and 2) that GNOME capplet guys zealously remove options with absolutely no regard to advanced users and commonly used advanced options. I've not yet found a way to work around this either. I even tried setting the preferred http* handlers in gconf-editor to open a shell script that in turn opened the URL with chromium-browser --new-window $*, but that didn't work either, oddly enough. Please notice error can be seen only when mangling is off i.e. all file names are shown unmodified. That mode is absolutely needed. I was having this problem with an nvidia 6600GT. I haven't been able to reproduce it after downgrading to the 173 series nvidia driver, using the Additional Drivers UI. Does this work for anyone else? Printer sharing also doesn't work, I'm not sure if it's due to this bug or another. How to reproduce: 1. On the host computer directly connected to the LaserJet, apply the fixes as per comment #4, #5, #7 above. 2. Verify that the host computer can print to the LaserJet successfully. 3. On the host computer, enable print sharing. (System Administration Printing Server Settings Publish shared printers connected to this system) and share the LaserJet if it's not shared yet. 4. On another computer, enable shared printer discovery (System Administration Printing Server Settings Show printers shared by other systems). HP LaserJet should show up in a few seconds. 5. Print through that other computer to that LaserJet, it fails. Hi Stefan, Just wanted to check in with you again regarding this bug. It's great that you've been able to work around the problem by using the newer kernel. Talking with Jesse Barnes (Intel upstream), a number of fixes went in to the kernel for this generation of hardware subsequent to what was pulled for Ubuntu's kernel in natty, so it sounds like we're just missing a key patch or two. [@Kernel team - might want to pick jbarnes' brain for patches worth pulling.] I think the next logical step would be to do a git bisect search on the kernel to identify what the fix was. The kernel team may have some better suggestions, but if you want to go forward with the bisection search, they've documented the procedure pretty well here: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Kernel/KernelBisection. Since it appears this is pinpointed to the kernel rather than X, I'm going to go ahead and close out the X task at this time. After upgrade to Ubuntu 11.04, selection of page rotation in Printers - My Cups-Pdf printer - Properties - Job options - Orientation, no more work: 1. When I select 180 deg rotation, i get not rotated PDF. (please see attachment #1) 2. When I print one document which has pages with different quantity of vertical and horizontal words/chars, i get PDF with randomly oriented (portrait/landscape) pages. Looks like some artificial intelligence was added. I compare to my Ubuntu 10.10 and find that all works normally in cups-pdf 2.5.0-16 . Public bug reported: Binary package hint: unity When hitting alt+f2 the first time after reboot, it shows just the small bar where you can type the command, not the bigger window with most used/recently used commands. When you type just one letter in the box the window will expand to show the history. I think this behaviour is inconsistent and requires users to perform an unnecessary extra action when they want to run a custom command. What I would like to see is that the alt+f2 window always opens up showing the most used commands, and not to make an exception when its the first time after reboot. [Bug 798044] [NEW] alt+f2 history function forgets some commands
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: unity I use multiple firefox profiles, so I start firefox with firefox --no- remote. Since its not possible to add this command to the unity bar I use alt+f2 and then run that command. I use this command every day, multiple times a day. But somehow unity cannot remember this command between reboots, which means I have to type it again and again. I'm not quite sure how to trigger this, the window does show many other command, even those I haven't used in ages. One of those is firefox -P profile --no-remote, which apparently does not trigger the same bug in unity. If there is anything I can do to help clear this up, please let me know.
