I experienced this bug while installing Ubuntu besides Windows Vista. Here's my
workaround:
Kill Ubiquity (the installer) via terminal when it freezes at laptop-detect:
$ sudo killall ubiquity
Then restart it:
$ sudo ubiquity
And then choose Upgrade existing Ubuntu installation. Then the
