[Bug 922976] Re: Kernel Oops - BUG: unable to handle kernel paging request at 850f08bc; EIP is at kmem_cache_alloc+0x50/0x100

2012-04-28 Thread gene
I guess I was a a little too optimistic, I had an oops once again,
without hibernates. The trace was not logged though, I could see the
trace messages in the console. Have no clue now. Will be testing this
rc4 kernel.

I also had this problem with ubuntu 12.04 and mysql-server 5.5, and
Paul's fix also worked for me. Seems like a pretty silly reason for
mysql to crash.

[Bug 987015] Re: [OEM, Realtek ALC662 rev1, Green Headphone Out, Front] Pulseaudio fails to detect card

2012-04-28 Thread Tyler Hicks
Thanks for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu
better. We appreciate the difficulties you are facing, but this appears
to be a "regular" (non-security) bug. I have unmarked it as a security
issue since this bug does not show evidence of allowing attackers to
cross privilege boundaries nor directly cause loss of data/privacy.
Please feel free to report any other bugs you may find.

Seeing the same thing here too. Upgraded a virtual-machine to 12.04, and
now when I try to connect to it from an 11.10 system via XDMCP I get the
same crash

$sudo Xnest :2 -query work-vm.local

Its interesting that the crash happens on 11.10, the only thing that
chaged is the xdmcp server was upgraded to 12.04. Connecting to a 11.10
machine works fine.

[Bug 881628] Re: Bad performance after a few minutes

2012-04-28 Thread Daniel van Vugt
Lilleman, it's possible you see similar bugs between different versions
of ubuntu but their causes might be different.

For example, there is a serious performance problem with the nvidia
295.40 driver in 12.04 --> bug 982710. So yes, please do try a different
driver/card to test so we can figure out if this is a general issue or
not.

Also, you say the problem existed in Ubuntu 10.10 for you, meaning it
was a problem before Unity. Can you please try logging in to a Unity2D
session (select on the login screen) to compare. And also try a "Gnome
Classic" session (may require installing "gnome-shell" package). Gnome
Classic is an important test because it uses Compiz, but does not use
Unity.

[Bug 812394] Re: Disable hibernate option by default

2012-04-28 Thread hoijui
i am also in favor of it being enabled by default.
you say it is unprofessional if Ubuntu shows the hibernate option but it does
not work, though that is exactly what is the case now, just that Ubuntu does
not really try to hibernate. for the user, these are both the same: "does not
work!". sure... there are scenarios where you would loose data in one way and
not in the other, but such scenarios can be drawn either way. for example, if i
have very low battery, i have to leave, and have lots of apps open.. i click on
hibernate, close the lid and off i go... while underway, the rest of the
battery gets emptied, and i loose data.

i am using xubuntu, which shows an error message box:
"Failed to hibernate session - not authorized"
... which suggests a system/software configuration error. this error starts
appearing after updating to 12.04, which suggest that the update mis-configured
the system, which... would be unprofessional. ;-)
i read that on Ubuntu, you do not get any error message, which is even worse.
The least i would expect, is a worthwhile and accurate error message. something
like: "there is lots of hardware ... certified ... if your system ...
therefore, hibernation has been disabled for your system, to prevent you from
using data."
and this error should appear right after clicking on hibernate, and an error
sound should appear, and the screen should not be locked.

The best thing you could do, would be to organize a whistle blower at MS, that
hands over their list of hardware+fixes for hibernation. if then you only fail
to properly hibernate for systems where MS fails too, you are on the safe side.
i would even find it morally just to hack into MS, for getting this list, as it
is morally totally wrong and bad for the end user, for hardware creators to
help MS but not others in this issue.

[Bug 986411] Re: Ubuntu12.04经常开机出现busybox,无法进系统

2012-04-28 Thread Tyler Hicks
Thanks for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu
better. We appreciate the difficulties you are facing, but this appears
to be a "regular" (non-security) bug. I have unmarked it as a security
issue since this bug does not show evidence of allowing attackers to
cross privilege boundaries nor directly cause loss of data/privacy.
Please feel free to report any other bugs you may find.

[Bug 987007] Re: Upgrade from 11.10 to 12.4beta2 not possible with fglrx installed

2012-04-28 Thread Andreas Siegert
Well, the difference between update-amanger refusing the upgrade and running
through was disabling the fglrx binary driver.
The PPA that had the driver you see in the logs was never used to install the
fglrx driver. The non canonical PPAs where my first guess of course, so I
disabled them all and tried to run the upgrade again, leading to the same error
message. That's when I started took into the jockey logs and discovered the
messages about fglrx which gave me the idea to disable the AI driver.

[Bug 277873] Re: cdrom upgrade requires absolute path

2012-04-28 Thread BryanFRitt
I ran into this same problem when I tried to upgrade 11.10 to 12.04, same
changes fixed the problem
I ended up doing something like:
commenting out the
`UPGRADER_DIR=dists/$CODENAME/main/dist-upgrader/binary-all` line. (put a #
infront of it)
Then change the fullpath line to
`fullpath=$ISOPATHGOESHERE/dists/$CODENAME/main/dist-upgrader/binary-all`
replacing `$ISOPATHGOESHERE` with the full path for the mounted ISO path, cd
path, or whatever it may be
(optional) comment out the `exit 1` lines... it cased the terminal to exit
without leaving the errors visable
and put word `sudo` infront of the `$TMPDIR/$CODENAME --cdrom "$cddirname" $@`
line
(note: don't copy the ` ` characters)

[Bug 930447] Re: Unable to Install Ubuntu 12.04 on Pentium M x86 Laptop due to PAE kernel

2012-04-28 Thread Jane Atkinson
You can also install a command-line system using the Xubuntu alternate
CD, which gives a non-pae kernel. This doesn't need an internet
connection, by the way.

Then reboot, login and enter the commands:

sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install ubuntu-desktop

to give a standard Ubuntu install with non-pae kernel. This stage will
need an internet connection (or access to an apt-cacher-ng server), of
course.

(I figure that there ought to be some way to use the Ubuntu alternate CD
for this stage, but haven't worked that out yet. That would mean needing
an internet connection only for the final updates, which might be useful
for people whose connections are a bit uncertain or slow.)

Though I haven't tried it, I assume that one could instead do:

sudo apt-get install kubuntu-desktop

[Bug 990913] [NEW] RAID goes into degrade mode on every boot 12.04 LTS server

2012-04-28 Thread Rodney Mosley
Public bug reported:

I have 2 new Dell PowerEdge R515.
Box have 2 internal SAS drives and 12 hot swap
I create a 12 driver raid 6 array on the 12 hot swap drives
without problem but on every reboot I get a message about
either degraded or not enough drives for the raid 6.

If I shutdown and pull all 12 drives and let boot. Then plug them in.
The array comes up fine most everytime.

This happens on both of these new R512

Also loaded 12.04 LTS server on a R710 and
the mpt2sas load and times out. I had to
add rootdelay=180 to boot parms.

[Bug 990260] Re: Latest kernel makes Sentelic touchpad misbehave

2012-04-28 Thread Chris D
The attached archive contains versions of sentelic.c and sentelic.h that
are drop-in replacements for the versions provided in the standard
kernel. This version of the driver, for me at least, works far better
than the one currently in teh standard kernel. I have attempted to
reduce the delta between my version and the standard one as much as
possible, however the core packet processing and initialisation routines
are too different to be reconciled easily. I'm not sure where Ubuntu's
version of the driver came from, but it seems to have been substantially
rewritten from the version I obtained from saaros/sentelic on githut a
few months ago.

[Bug 990851] Re: unity fails to load on login and unity --reset crashes

2012-04-28 Thread Sean Purdon
I don't think it's appropriate for me to try to guess which source
package this concerns, given that it's a login error. Compiz would
certainly seem the obvious culprit, but it could equally be something
else, with the compiz/ubiquity issue being but a symptom.

[Bug 990908] [NEW] Won't honor "Do Nothing" when Lid is Closed

2012-04-28 Thread Lonnie Lee Best
Public bug reported:

My laptop is plugged in, and as you can see (in the attached screenshot)
I've selected to "Do Nothing" when the lid of my laptop is closed.
However, each time I close the lid, it goes into "suspend" mode. I've
even set it to "Do Nothing" for both "unplugged" and "plugged". No
matter what I select, when I close the lid, it goes into suspend mode.

Right now, I'm trying to watch a movie on my big screen tv (as a
secondary monitor). I'd like to shut my laptops lid (powering its native
monitor off), while the movie plays on the external TV monitor. However,
I'm unable to do this because the gnome-power-manager won't honor the
power settings as they are shown in the attached screenshot.

[Bug 990909] [NEW] [regression][precise] Focus-follow-mouse is no longer compatible with fullscreen Flash

2012-04-28 Thread Tristan Schmelcher
Public bug reported:

Starting immediately after update from Oneiric to Precise, focus-
follows-mouse no longer works with fullscreen Flash. When focus-follows-
mouse is enabled, attempting to go fullscreen in a Flash video fails.
The fullscreen window opens momentarily and then disappears. Very
occasionally, it stays up. There does not seem to be any work-around.
Both Firefox and Chrome are affected.

Repro steps:

1) Open CCSM.
2) Go to General Options -> Focus & Raise Behaviour.
3) Uncheck Click To Focus.
4) Go to www.youtube.com and play any video.
5) Try to go fullscreen.

Expected:

Fullscreen window should open and stay open.

Actual:

Fullscreen window almost always fails to stay open.

[Bug 432254] Re: *BSD not detected by os-prober

2012-04-28 Thread Peter Belew
This problem, at least for FreeBSD, seems to have been solved in 12.04
"Precise Pangolin":

I just upgraded a system from 11.04 to 11.10, then to 12.04 yesterday.
It has Ubuntu, Windows XP, and FreeBSD 8.1 installed in it, similar to
the configuration of the system I originally reported this bug on. (That
system, with a C3 CPU, won't run recent versions of Ubuntu, and now has
a recent 486 version of Debian on it).

/dev/sda2 is a /boot partition
/dev/sda5 is "/"
/dev/sda7 is "/home"

After running update-grub, the stanzas for Windows XP and FreeBSD in
/boot/grub/grub.cfg now look like

### BEGIN /etc/grub.d/30_os-prober ###
menuentry "Microsoft Windows XP Professional (on /dev/sda1)" --class windows
--class os {
insmod part_msdos
insmod ntfs
set root='(hd0,msdos1)'
search --no-floppy --fs-uuid --set=root 127855CF7855B1E9
drivemap -s (hd0) ${root}
chainloader +1
}
menuentry "FreeBSD 8.1-RELEASE (GENERIC) (on /dev/sda3)" --class windows
--class os {
insmod part_msdos
insmod ufs2
set root='(hd0,msdos3)'
search --no-floppy --fs-uuid --set=root 4b2e8da4ae6a55e3
drivemap -s (hd0) ${root}
chainloader +1
}
### END /etc/grub.d/30_os-prober ###

I believe there is a FreeBSD bootloader in /dev/sda3. At any rate, when
I select the FreeBSD entry in the Grub2 menu, it loads the FreeBSD
bootloader, which displays the usual boot options.

Previously, I had this content in /etc/grub.d/40_custom:

#!/bin/sh
exec tail -n +3 $0
# This file provides an easy way to add custom menu entries. Simply type the
# menu entries you want to add after this comment. Be careful not to change
# the 'exec tail' line above.
#
menuentry "FreeBSD 8.1" {
  set root=(hd0,3)
  chainloader +1
}

After upgrading to "precise", there were 2 entries for BSD in the Grub2
boot menu: the one produced automatically and the one produced by my
40_custom file. So I commented out the FreeBSD stuff in this file, re-
ran update-grub, and am left with only the "FreeBSD 8.1-RELEASE
(GENERIC) (on /dev/sda3)" entry created by the partition scan.

Actually, this may have been fixed already in 11.10, but I didn't notice
whether there were one or two FreeBSD entries in the boot menu after
that upgrade; I upgraded right away to 12.04.

I believe that it's necessary to have the FreeBSD boot loader in the
FreeBSD partition ("slice"). It might be possible to install FreeBSD
without a boot loader at all, and have the code run by update-grub find
the FreeBSD kernel, but someone needs to verify whether this is
possible.
