along the lines of: could not load theme ambiance
format for image file could not be determined
later, when more packages of the upgrade were installed, the restart of
metacity became possible again

Yes, then it will fail. I didnt adjust the ubuntu-quicklists.diff patch
for that. If you comment the ubuntu-quicklists.diff in
debian/patches/series it should work.
I wont fix that patch as it is upstreamed cleanly for 3.6.

[Oneiric Precise] 64-bit installer
I'm running vanvugt's ppa version and it does fix the bug (and rotate
with window works again), but all unfocused windows are just plain
white, including the root window, which makes it look like the desktop
wallpaper is plain white as well. refocusing a window makes its contents
visible again.

It works to edit /etc/apport/crashdb.conf and add 'Crash' to the
'problem_types': ['Bug', 'Package', 'Crash'], or to make that change in
a separate file and run.

There was no problem with either Maverick or natty.
I have no idea if this problem appeared in Oneiric as I skipped over it when
I upgraded.
The upstream kernel seems to work fine. I have no problem with
restarting or shutting down.

Right now with chromium: 1:24 1:14 0:80, it's like waves ~ up and
down... And /usr/bin/X -nolisten tcp beetwen 3-14%! Anyway, for me, not
