after reading comment #27, I upgraded again from 11.10 to 12.04 and the problem
has disappeared almost completely.
Now there is no flickering during regular use of the laptop.
There is a small nuisance left though, don't know if it is worth fixing. Short
flickering appears during logging

I know, but in the meantime you have no other choice (if you want to stay with
ubuntu :-)
The #165 solution does not help, because you have a Ivy Bridge system (see #133
and #136).
The Patch from #165 is already in Linux 3.2.0-25.40 (proposed repo).
