Exactly as described, mouse input to workspace switcher on panel fails
using gnome-classic and compiz but works using gnome-classic and
metacity. As part of failure the panel disappears, but will return if
the Ctrl+Alt+T shortcut is used to open a terminal. The returned panel
fails the same way

I have the same issue; not at every suspend cycle but quite often. In my
case, the network seems connected but dont't work (no DNS, no
connectivity). A
sudo restart network-manager

This happened to me when switching quickly to the 'Financial' mode and
then to the 'Basic' mode. I haven't looked into it further, but my gut
instinct is that I switched away from financial mode before the initial
