Ok, I've probably found a workaround:
Edit the file /etc/gdm/PostSession (which is executed at logout) and add the
following line before the line "exit 0":
gsettings set org.gnome.desktop.background picture-uri
file:///Path_to_your_desktop_background.jpg
The standard backgrounds are found in /usr
A solution for me it's downgrade of gnome-disk-utility for the quantal
to precise verison, the precise version contains the package with the
"original" palimpsest and it works with no problem under quantal .

I just updated from 12.04 to 12.10 (64 Bit) and a few days later, hell
broke lose: the computer doesn'T boot corretc, lots of boot failers,
disk checks on every boot and after several boot, the login screen
appears. But the system is read only. I have an Intel 80 GB SSD with /
and /home partitions.
