I can boot but, again, Unity does not load (no launcher or top panel).
Also my input devices do not work (no response to keyboard, mouse responds but
freezes) so I cannot use the system.

We can confirm they work great on 12.04 12.10

I think I managed to trick this thing to work. Steps
1) Try to print something, it'll fail
2) Detach and re-attach the USB end of the printer cable (do NOT reboot the
printer)
3) Now printing magically works

Are you sure this is Linux/Ubuntu related? The Dell Vostro 3700's cooling
system is basically broken. Over time dust accumulates on the fan protection
cover, preventing hot air from escaping. Applying the latest bios updates helps

series in the xorg-edgers PPA, but fine with the regular precise kernels
