Ok, after a deep look into this it seems the usblp kernel module does not set
the ieee1284_id proper, which makes system-config-printer-udev skip the device
even though the serial number is present..
I tested this for my setup (after going in circles for a good while) with:

Compositing to XRender) seems to have worked for me. I was seeing the
effect in simple "ls -a" (which doesn't scroll) in xterm, as well as in
emacs running in an xterm.

Same problem. System freezes completely. No mouse No keyboard. No SAMBA share.
Can happen while I am browsing or if system is idle (except BOINC) and screen

The proposed package fixes this bug on Precise.
I ran the testcase against the latest version first (96-0ubuntu3) and the
problem showed up after a few seconds. Then I upgraded to the proposed version
and let the scripts run for a while. The issue was gone.

Found that this works even better, now the fan acts as before suspend:
Create the file ”/etc/pm/sleep.d/99fancontrol.sh”, insert the code below
and chmod 755 it.

Well, the problem is that I don't know if it's a bug with gnome, samba
