white barred screen pattern and a line in the terminal view that says
nouveau :01.0 nouveau failed to idle channel 1 the next line says

I expected this to install VirtualBox without errors and I would be able
to install VMs straight away.

According to your description, you start pulseaudio with sudo, or as
root. THis won't work, because pulseaudio needs to run as your user, so
what happens if you run start-pulseaudio directly, i.e without sudo?
