I tried the kernel at http://people.canonical.com/~ppisati/linux-
image-3.5.0-31-highbank_3.5.0-31.52~549142a_armhf.deb , and I no longer
get the kernel crash. I did see the out of space error from swift-bench,
but it seems to be XFS running out of inodes:

Workaround (if you're root, not suitable for the guest):
Switch to console (Ctrl-Alt-F1), login as user, su -, passwd guest ->
choose a valid password, exit console, switch back to X (Ctrl-Alt-F7).

Yes base Mono works then. If you had a crash during the install, try this GAC
repair command, it will re-install all libs into Mono's GAC:
sudo apt-get install --reinstall mono-gac

I suffer the same problem too, adjusting the brightness via settings or
keyboard doesn't actually affect screen brightness, and when it lowers
brightness due to inactivity the screen flashes scaringly. Same
hardware: Dell XPS13 developer edition w/ native ubuntu (upgraded to
13.04 and up-to-date).

So the issue is the false SVIDEO detection then. The g4x silicon was
quite flaky with its TV detection, but I thought we had it stable now.
Firstly: does your hardware even have an SVIDEO connector (composite out)?
