As James Dupin suggests, I installed phonon-backend-gstreamer1.0 (but no
phonon-backend-gstreamer1.0-common which was not listed in my configuration)
with synaptic.
It uninstalled automaticaly phonon-backend-gstreamer and

If I get a text, the message indicator is blue. If I click a message
from within the indicator, I am presented with a text field and a send
button. I can type into the text field, but the button is grayed out. If
I click it, then the text field, etc goes away, but the message
