exists, so the connection is lost and restarted again, and again and
again.

My suggestion would be to simply ditch the thing and use shutter

a critical bug affecting god knows how many Ubuntu releases but their
job doesn't end with writing a patch. The patch needs to be made
available to the majority of users which do not have the tech skills to
apply it - either by
