[Bug 1525735] Re: X server fails to start under regular user in Xenial

2015-12-14 Thread Tim
This is seemingly caused by the virtualbox drivers not yet having
support to non-root Xorg sessions.

The workaround for now is to install xserver-xorg-legacy and/or
virtualbox-guest-dkms

[Bug 1074804] Re: Application Docky Crashes Frequently

2015-12-14 Thread ^rooker
I've recently set up a new notebook with 14.04.3 a few days ago.
I know that Docky was known to crash (=disappear) every now and then in 12.04
already, but in 14.04 it's simply "gone" most of the time.

Anyone know what can be done to improve this?

Thanks in advance.

[Bug 1524165] Re: merge with debian

2015-12-14 Thread Steve Langasek
- debian/helpers/goenv.sh - this had previously been dropped from the Ubuntu
packaging (superseded by the changes to debian/rules), but is readded in your
version.
- debian/control: Debian's golang package has dependencies on
golang-{doc,go,src} (= ${source:Version}); Debian has golang-{doc,go,src} (=
${binary:Version}). This difference is not explained in the Ubuntu changelog.
I believe the delta should be dropped. It happens that both Debian and Ubuntu
are wrong, *some* of these deps should be ${source:Version} and *some* of them
should be ${binary:Version}. But the difference between the two is irrelevant
in Ubuntu, it only matters in Debian - so we should stay in sync with Debian
for this bit, and propose a fix in Debian.
- debian/patches/skip-userns-tests-when-chrooted.patch: seems to be newly-added
in this revision.
- debian/rules: your merge results look very different than mine, this warrants
a closer look since the pre-existing delta was quite large.

I think m-o-m is confusing you. The file is new in debian since we
uploaded the first 1.5 version to wily.

OK. I think the fact that some all packages become any packages as
part of the golang -> gccgo fake package stuff has impact here?

> - debian/patches/skip-userns-tests-when-chrooted.patch: seems to be
newly-added in this revision.

Yeah, but I'm fairly the tests will fail without it (and running the
test suite on build is new in Debian recently). I don't know why they
don't fail on debian buildds -- older kernels there, maybe?

> - debian/rules: your merge results look very different than mine, this

Well what I did was mostly take the Debian rules file and re-implement
the dependency packages afresh on top of the new file. I don't know if
it's entirely honest to call this a "merge" but I definitely think
it's an improvement. What does yours look like?

[Bug 1526111] [NEW] RAID1 + LVM in 14.04.3 causes intermittent boot failure

2015-12-14 Thread Cal Leeming
Public bug reported:

This problem seems to be related to a timing bug within `udev`, and has been
experienced by other users as seen here;
http://serverfault.com/questions/567579/boot-failure-with-root-on-md-raid1-lvm-udev-event-timing

Changing `/dev/md/0` to `/dev/md0` inside `/etc/mdadm/mdadm.conf` seems
to resolve the problem. However unless you apply this patch, the system
will intermittently fail to boot correctly, getting stuck here;

kernel: [3.003506] md: bind
kernel: [3.007705] md/raid1:md0: active with 1 out of 1 mirrors
kernel: [3.007768] md0: detected capacity change from 0 to 499972440064
kernel: [3.047284] md0: unknown partition table
kernel: [3.124709] device-mapper: table: 252:0: linear: dm-linear: Device
lookup failed
kernel: [3.124759] device-mapper: ioctl: error adding target to table
kernel: [3.125156] device-mapper: table: 252:1: linear: dm-linear: Device
lookup failed
kernel: [3.125196] device-mapper: ioctl: error adding target to table

There is also an example `/lib/udev/rules.d/` patch inside the thread I
posted above, which proposes to add a `sleep` statement into LVM udev
rules.

2015-12-14 Thread wpshooter
Michael:

To the best of my knowledge I am no longer having this problem.

However, that may be due to the fact that I no longer use Ubuntu
operating system but switched to exclusive use of Linux Mint (version
17) about 2 years ago.

Thanks.

I think m-o-m is confusing you. The file is new in debian since we
uploaded the first 1.5 version to wily.

> - debian/control: Debian's golang package has dependencies on
golang-{doc,go,src} (= ${source:Version}); Debian has
golang-{doc,go,src} (= ${binary:Version}). This difference is not
explained in the Ubuntu changelog. I believe the delta should be
dropped. It happens that both Debian and Ubuntu are wrong, *some* of
these deps should be ${source:Version} and *some* of them should be
${binary:Version}. But the difference between the two is irrelevant in
Ubuntu, it only matters in Debian - so we should stay in sync with
Debian for this bit, and propose a fix in Debian.

> - debian/rules: your merge results look very different than mine, this
warrants a closer look since the pre-existing delta was quite large.

Well what I did was mostly take the Debian rules file and re-implement
the dependency packages afresh on top of the new file. I don't know if
it's entirely honest to call this a "merge" but I definitely think
it's an improvement. What does yours look like?

We should already have code in the version of grub-installer that will

we're installing on. Could you please attach /var/log/syslog from the
installer when it fails? This should include the exact messages from

[Bug 1511063] Re: Scopes freeze after few times slide on Bq 4.5

2015-12-14 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
This bug was fixed in the package click-reviewers-tools - 0.35

---
click-reviewers-tools (0.35) xenial; urgency=medium

  [ Jamie Strandboge ]
  * clickreviews/cr_systemd.py:
- add checks for listen-stream, socket, socket-user and socket-group
- remove vendor checks with bus-name (LP: #1510522)
  * clickreviews/cr_security.py:
- make sure that the generated profile name is under the current 253
character maximum. This might have to be adjusted after the AppArmor
stacking work is completed (LP: #1499544)
- adjust for xenial snappy defaulting to using 'network-client' instead
  of 'networking'
- use 'NEEDS REVIEW' instead of 'MANUAL REVIEW'
  * clickreviews/cr_lint.py:
- check if package ships .click directory
- add a few more vcs files
- remove vendor-specific checks. 'vendor' is still allowed for
compatibility with older snappy versions, but no formatting checks are
  performed (LP: #1510522)
- 'Maintainer' checks in the click manifest should only be done with click
  packages (LP: #1510522)
- don't prompt manual review when find .excludes file
- add kernel and os as valid snap types
- remove package filename checks. They were meaningless and hard to
  maintain
- sort unknown snappy yaml keys
- use 'NEEDS REVIEW' instead of 'MANUAL REVIEW'
  * clickreviews/cr_common.py:
- add valid yaml keys for kernel snaps
- add a couple more mime types for detecting binaries (useful for arm
  kernels)
  * update data/apparmor-easyprof-ubuntu.json for 16.04 policy
  * Makefile: add json syntax check
  * several changes for squashfs snaps that won't have a click manifest, etc.
Importantly, this means that only package.yaml is looked at and a lot of
click specific tests can be skipped
- cr_common.py:
+ rename a few variable to not be click specific
  + add self.pkgfmt
+ adjust __init__() to conditionally use package.yaml on squashfs,
otherwise click manifest
+ make click data structure initialization conditional on if click
or not (eg, don't run hooks code on squashfs images)
- adjust clickreviews/cr_* to conditionally run certain click-only tests
  on click packages
- adjust architecture checks to use self.pkg_arch and rename
  control_architecture_specified_needed as architecture_specified_needed
- cr_security.py:
+ revamp to use package.yaml on non-click instead of now nonexistent
security manifest
+ update push-helper template test to not make hooks specific
+ network-client should not be allowed with push helpers either
+ conditionally look for INSTALL_DIR on 16.04 systems in security-policy
+ adjust security-override checks on 16.04 to follow 16.04 yaml
+ make click manifest checks conditional on if click
- cr_tests.py: mock _pkgfmt_type(), _pkgfmt_version() and _is_squashfs()

  [ Michael Nelson ]
  * add support for non-mocked tests

  [ Michael Vogt ]
  * add support for squashfs snaps (currently will trigger manual review)

  [ Daniel Holbach ]
  * Pass absolute path of click or snap file - that way it's safe even if we
chdir (LP: #1514346).
  * Allow translated scope .ini fields to have 3 letters as their lang_code
identifier, ie. 'ast'. (LP: #1517017)
  * Ensure "urls" is not empty (LP: #1522777)

  [ James Tait ]
  * Add a handful of links to askubuntu questions to explain some of the
rejection messages.

  [ Alberto Mardegan ]
  * Allow "accounts" hook since the 15.04.1 framework
  * Online Accounts: update to latest plugin hook format (LP: #1520605)

  [ Marcus Tomlinson ]
  * Forbid the internal "DebugMode" scope.ini key from making its way into the
store (LP: #1511063)

Thanks for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu
better. We appreciate the difficulties you are facing, but this appears
to be a "regular" (non-security) bug. I have unmarked it as a security
issue since this bug does not show evidence of allowing attackers to

[Bug 1489323] Re: MX4 button sometimes remains active with the screen off

@Pat I can absolutly reproduce this using the following sequence

1. Set phone to unlock on swipe
2. Rapidly tap the "home" button
3. Simultaneously tap the power button to lock the screen
4. Stop tapping the "home" button after the screen darkens
5. Unlock the device

Expected: greeter is shown
Actual: Dash is shown

I can visibly see the "home" button blink well after I've pressed it
(and well after the screen blanks. This seems like a good place to start
looking around.

[Bug 1510096] Re: Please merge 1.9.6-2 (main) from Debian Unstable (main)

2015-12-14 Thread Seth Arnold
Please disable HTTP/2 / SPDY for initial inclusion into Xenial; the
security team would really prefer this code have some more real-world
exposure and fuzzing before we turn it on. We can always turn it on
after release via an SRU later.

Thanks

[Bug 1510096] Re: Please merge 1.9.6-2 (main) from Debian Unstable (main)

2015-12-14 Thread Thomas Ward
ACK on Security Team Request.

Notes:
* SPDY is dead as of HTTP/2 module being released - SPDY support is dead as of
1.9.x (so there's no SPDY to disable).

Further discussion on HTTP/2 enablement will need to be done closer to
16.04 release in the Sec Team and otherwise, to discuss when/if HTTP/2
is enabled.

[Bug 1517133] Re: [regression] Mouse speed in Unity8 is much lower than elsewhere (to the point of useless)

2015-12-14 Thread Daniel van Vugt
I agree abolishing acceleration is not a final answer, and there will be
configurations where it is needed.

However, the acceleration introduced in Mir 0.18 is insufficient and
inappropriate to address this bug. The slow-down recently introduced in
Untiy8 is too pronounced, and needs to be fixed in Unity8.

[Bug 1505564] Re: Soft lockup with "block nbdX: Attempted send on closed socket" spam

2015-12-14 Thread Dan Streetman
Ok, here's my analysis of the latest dump.

There are 3 kernel migrate threads waiting; this is the cause of the
softlockup - specifically pid 101 on cpu 13 is where the softlockup (and
then panic, due to panic on softlockup enabled) happens, and the other 2
migrate threads (pid 79 and 151) are also waiting. All are waiting for
multi_cpu_stop to finish. The way multi_cpu_stop works is: the caller
sets up one or more cpus to coordinate stopping; in multi_cpu_stop, the
state machine moves from MULTI_STOP_PREPARE through disable irqs, to run
(the provided function), to exit when done. However, only the specified
cpus (in the cpumask) will run the function. The state machine doesn't
proceed to the next step until all cpus have processed the current
state.

This is where the problem comes in. In this case, it's a migration of
tasks from one numa node to another, via numa rebalancing. In this
particular case, there are 3 rebalancing events happening: cpu 3 and cpu
10, cpu 3 and cpu 13, cpu 3 and cpu 20. the migrate threads on cpus 10,
13, and 20 are running multi_cpu_stop, but it's stuck waiting because
cpu 3 still has it in its queue.

cpu 3 is writing bytes to the serial port, and currently waiting for
confirmation that the serial port write completed. This wait is done
via checking the serial port register for CTS, then if it's not set
delaying for 1us, and trying again. However, this is all inside a held
spinlock, with irqs disabled. So while this serial port r/w is being
done, nothing else will run on this cpu. But - the code limits this to
1 second, so presumably it shouldn't lock up the cpu for longer than 1
second or so (I haven't dug too far into this, so the function may be
called multiple times with the lock held).

For whatever reason, that serial port r/w seems to be taking a long
time. The migrate threads on the other cpus are waiting for it to
finish, so that the migrate thread on cpu 3 can run, and move the
multi_cpu_stop state machine along. But that doesn't happen in time to
avoid the softlockup detector.

The multi_cpu_stop function could arguably use the addition of
touch_nmi_watchdog(), since it intentionally spins on the cpu with
interrupts disabled - doing so would avoid the softlockup detector (but
would not change the system behavior). However, it's not really its
fault, since the real cause is the other cpu(s) it's waiting for being
locked.

back on cpu 3 (that the others are waiting on), the way that delay is
implemented is using the TSC. Unfortunately, the TSC is a generally
unreliable clock source, so it's possible there is a problem in the
delay function.

To determine that, can you please boot with the "notsc" parameter, which
will change the udelay function to use a simple loop instead of the TSC,
and reproduce the softlockup?

[Bug 1421325] Re: xdmcp server ubuntu 14.04 login error

2015-12-14 Thread Michael Plotkin
Hello, I am also affected by this bug - cannot login using any and all XDMCP
clients that I know of into my server running Ubuntu 14.04. I am reluctant to
switch to lightdm from gdm for a variety of reasons. I also would like to
understand how active this bug is. It seems to me that if it's a "real" bug it
should affect quite a lot of people - not just 2 of us. Or are we doing
something wrong in the sense of not configuring something correctly.
Thank you,
Michael.

[Bug 1223622] Re: add support for crypttab mounting of luks devices with detached headers

2015-12-14 Thread DiagonalArg
@Attila - The patches from here seem to have been included (with some
changes) in the new scripts that are available in 15.10. Unfortunately,
the scripts do not include the header in the initramfs, with a note that
this is a "security risk". Hm. So I thought I might just add the
header to the /boot directory which is unencrypted, thinking this would
be available at bootup. Then I pointed the header= option there.
But that didn't work. On bootup I get a message that the header file is
not available. Dropping into a shell, I find that I am at the
(initramfs) prompt.

I'll have to review the boot process to find out if there is some part
of the /boot directory that is available, or if I actually must have the
header in the initramfs. If the latter, then the scripts will (again)
have to be altered.

I really don't understand the point of crippling the scripts in that
way. The idea is to put the header on a USB or SD and then carry that
with us. I'm not clear on what the security problem is. Having the
header hanging out there on the disk unprotected is not a security
problem??

Suggestions welcome!

[Bug 1526110] [NEW] Xorg freeze

2015-12-14 Thread Enrique Agustini
Public bug reported:

Symptons:
Display freezes, but not mouse, after 30 seconds aprox display refreshes, and
only background image is shown over 3 seconds aprox and then apport window
appears to send report, other times apport window doesn't appear and everything
just continues as normal.

Steps to reproduce:
1. I think the goal in this is saturate GPU, so what I do is to open many
images with GIMP say 20, open Firefox, Chrome, VLC player with a video running
and Audacity. With those are sufficient to reproduce the issue which becomes
recurrent to say every 2 minutes.

To make it clear, not only xorg package gets involved in these freezes
other many times it's compiz.

I'd like you to give me guidelines to seriously troubleshoot this issue.

Thanks

[Bug 1526116] [NEW] Seeing race condition between update_port and delete_port on lbaas vip port when lbaas_listener delete and loadbalancer_delete is called back to back

2015-12-14 Thread Divya ChanneGowda
Public bug reported:

As lb and lb listener db entry is deleted before the driver.listener.delete is
completed.
When listener_delete and loadbalancer_delete is triggered repeatedly,
before update_port triggered by listener_delete is finished,
loadbalancer_delete triggers delete_port. And when update_port is resumed,

[Bug 1524165] Re: merge with debian

2015-12-14 Thread Steve Langasek
The debdiff shows some changes that are not part of the existing diff
between Ubuntu and Debian, e.g. in the 0ubuntu1->4ubuntu1 debdiff:

-Build-Depends: debhelper (>= 7.4.10), bison, ed, mawk | awk, perl, netbase,
-   golang (>= 1:1.4~) | gccgo-5
-Build-Depends-Indep: po-debconf
+Build-Depends: debhelper (>= 7.4.10),
+   golang-go (>= 2:1.4.2-2~) | gccgo-5,
+ netbase

These appear to be reasonable changes to make to the packaging, but it's
incorrect to list them as "remaining changes" in the debian changelog
for the merge. It also complicates the review of the package, since
this combines the merge of the new Debian package version, with a number
of independent changes.

Could we instead do a clean merge of Debian -4 into xenial, so we can
account for everything that's currently in the Ubuntu delta, and then
apply any further improvements on top of that? Doing a test merge here
gave me several differences to your package, and it would be clearer to
understand if these are the result of a disagreement in the merge, or
the result of an additional change.

[Bug 1526095] Re: Wireshark fails to start under Unity8

2015-12-14 Thread Daniel van Vugt
Thanks for the bug report.

Connecting 3rd party client apps to Unity8 requires them to have something like
this string on their command line:
--desktop_file_hint=unity8
because Unity8 will actually inspect the command line of the app.

So if you're lucky, your app supports '--' and you can go:
wireshark -- --desktop_file_hint=unity8

If you're unlucky then that won't work and you need either the
app/toolkit to add '--' support, or to ask the Unity8 team nicely to
remove the desktop_file_hint requirement.

Please let us know how it goes...

Thanks for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu
better. We appreciate the difficulties you are facing, but this appears
to be a "regular" (non-security) bug. I have unmarked it as a security
issue since this bug does not show evidence of allowing attackers to
cross privilege boundaries nor directly cause loss of data/privacy.

[Bug 1526113] Re: needs s390x support

2015-12-14 Thread dann frazier
Here's a patch to add s390x support to cpu-checker. Logically, it does
the same as POWER and just assumes that the hardware is always virt
capable. My understanding is that zSeries supports nested virtualization
(SIE instruction supports 2 layers, then the OS emulates SIE after
that).

I also did some cleanup:
 - replaced a series of if/elif/elif/elif with a case statement to reduce code
duplication
 - I replaced the "POWER" virt type with one called "generic" that can be
shared among
platforms that are always assumed to be virt-capable
 - I got rid of the comment about "HYP mode" in power, as "HYP mode" is an ARM
construct.

[Bug 1526119] [NEW] Setting clock to AM/PM causes Gnome-Shell to crash and prevents the user from logging in

2015-12-14 Thread Cerin
Public bug reported:

Steps to reproduce:

1. In Gnome-Shell, click the clock readout to show the detail dialog, then
select "Date & Time Settings".
2. Select the radio button for "AM/PM" and close the window. Notice that the
clock readout format remains unchanged.
3. Press alt+f2 and enter r to reload Gnome-Shell. Notice Gnome-Shell never
reloads and becomes frozen.
4. In a terminal shell, type `sudo reboot` to reboot the computer.
5. Try to login. Lightdm appears to accept your password, but after several
minutes of showing a blank background, redirects you back to the login screen.
6. Try to login as guest. Notice Gnome-Shell still loads correctly with a blank
profile.

Expected result: Changing clock format should update the clock format,
and not render my computer unusable.

Actual result: Changing clock format corrupts something in
~/.config/dconf/user, which prevents Gnome-Shell from loading.

Workaround: As mentioned in various tickets and blogs as a solution
behind the infamous "Ubuntu login screen redirects back to the login
screen" bug, the only option that worked for me was to delete
~/.config/dconf/user and then restart lightdm. This temporarily fixes
it, however it also deletes all your Gnome-Shell preferences and
customizations. Also, if you try to change the clock format, you'll
again hose all your Gnome preferences.

I suspect this bug was introduced within the last couple months, because
the machine this occurred on is fairly new and I first set the clock
format just a few months ago. I've also changed clock format on several
different 14.04 machines without issue. This problem occurred today
after I ran a normal `apt-get upgrade` and then rebooted. It left me
locked out at the login screen, and I tried many different solutions.
Eventually I stumbled onto the `rm ~/.config/dconf/user` fix, but it
wasn't until I tried re-applying all my customizations before I realized
that the clock format change is the specific one that triggers the bug.

[Bug 1521745] Re: sshd will fail to start or restart if non-default Port option is incorrectly put after a non-default ListenAddress

2015-12-14 Thread jhartr7
Thanks Robie. I think you may have misunderstood what the bug is. The
quote you reference is not really relevant in this case, because what I
am reporting isn't that something goes wrong when a port is not
specified.

The important line from the documentation is this, which I provided
originally:

"Additionally, any Port options must precede this option for non-port
qualified addresses."

So, yes, my configuration is invalid, but the behavior of sshd when this
happens and the experience around it could use improvement. If it
detects that the configuration is invalid, it should flag it as such and
make it obvious from the logs/stdout/stdterr rather than letting the
process try to restart and falsely report that it restarted
successfully, because it didn't.

I agree that part of this could legitimately be a bug in OpenSSH.

Yes, true. They would be remaining changes if the Debian maintainers

Well, maybe. I could certainly drop the build-deps, the copyright
changes, the nocheck support and the lintian warnings for now but the
two patches are required to avoid ftbfs and the race file stuff is a
gross bug I'd rather not import. I'll give it a go.

[Bug 1517133] Re: [regression] Mouse speed in Unity8 is much lower than elsewhere (to the point of useless)

2015-12-14 Thread Daniel van Vugt
Furthermore, when a configuration GUI is available, many users will
configure and want mouse accuracy to be exactly what it is right now in
Mir 0.17. So please make sure Unity8 works with that and does not rely
on the spuriously large acceleration that libinput introduces.
