According to /etc/init.d/elasticsearch, it's supposed to save its PID
file in /var/run/elasticsearch.pid. But it can't, because it's also
supposed to run as the user elasticsearch, which doesn't have write
access to /var/run.
The init script needs to be changed to use

I finally figured it all out. The camera was on a 'USB 3' bus which is
handled completely differently (and god knows where) than the rest of
USB. That's why I couldn't get to it in terminal. On top of that I
misread the camera manual and missed that it uses 30 fps for 1280x720 so
the fps was

I have two machines here running Kubuntu 15.10. One has nvidia graphics card
and it has this problem. The other machine has Intel graphics, and has not
exhibited any symptoms of this bug.
The machine with the nvidia graphics is using nvidia driver 352 (recommended in
system settings).

Updated BIOS on 1/19/16. Have not seen the issue in the first 5
minutes, but will wait to update status until it has had a couple of
days. Too soon to tell...
