This problem just happened to me on my Thinkpad x301. I am running Linux
Mint 17.3, which is based on Ubuntu 14.4. I have been running successive
versions of Linux Mint for years without this happening. I recently, and
for the first time, decided to use the built-in camera to video chat. I
I have the same problem with Linux kernel 4.4.8 on my fresh (bought 4
days ago) HP notebook 17-y011nc, with AMD/ATI Topaz XT [Radeon R7
M260/M265].
The interesting thing is, that originally I had the 4.4.0 kernel from
Ubuntu 16.04.1 LTS but it sometimes got frozen during suspending. Not

KXStudio version (Kubuntu?) from 14.04 to 16.06. I used the upgrade
