Tried out nomodeset GRUB boot, and removed quiet and splash from the
boot, but that does not help, and I was not able to see any error

This is still a problem in Lubuntu 16.04. gstreamer1.0-pulseaudio is
installed by default (presumably following Ubuntu), gstreamer1.0-alsa is
not.
'sudo apt install gstreamer1.0-alsa' fixes the problem. Gstreamer apps
such as banshee now output audio instead of silence.
I will file a bug against
Colin, with grub2 in yakkety being patched, we should be ready for
zfsutils-linux in yakkety to drop /lib/udev/rules.d/69-vdev.rules and
"Conflicts: grub2 << 2.02~beta2-36ubuntu5".

I could not agree more with Robert Jansen, as I also think the problem
is caused by the systemd plague. Steps to reproduce on a Thinkpad X1
Carbon 4th gen:
1) Turn on; shutdown -h now => no problem;

I noticed that my /run mounted as tmpfs and is 371M and just used 1.5M.
There is still plenty of room.
My system is installed in the second disk (/dev/sdb1) and boot loader in
/dev/sda is the grub.
After the installation failed, I can find the vmlinuz and initrd.img are
already installed in the
