Doh! In my case the issue was that I had replaced one of the disks on
the server. In the process the server had decided it was going to boot
from disk #3... Changed that and it all seems to have worked. Trying a

Using kernel 4.4.0, the system doesn't appear to detect the AMD Radeon
RX 480 graphics card and reverts to VESA mode.
Upgrading to kernel 4.8.0-32 through xenial-updates does not fix the
problem, instead the system hangs after a few seconds of showing the
login screen in VESA

I'm using fcitx and googlepinyin. Fcitx always drains away lots of memory
(1000m+) in several seconds when typing Chinese, which may cause the whole
system to crash.
It appeared after i upgraded to ubuntu 16.10 from 16.04 with update-manager.
