[Bug 1694596] Re: LiteOn NVMe APST issue

2017-05-30 Thread Kai-Heng Feng
@John
If 6000 doesn't work but 0 works, it means operational states PS1 and PS2 have
issue.
Can you try linux kernel in http://people.canonical.com/~khfeng/apst-rste-z/?

@Andy
Do we need to quirk off LiteOn completely, just like Toshiba?

@Mario
Does this also happen on Windows?

[Bug 1550923] Re: 16.04's virtualenv uses Python 3 but python executable is Python 2

2017-05-30 Thread Seth Hill
> Re: Changing how a basic tool like virtulenv is packaged ... is just
annoying

I realize this bug is over a year old now, but I am just now arriving
here. I've been encountering it here and there for several months. It
was just luck that I noticed a default='python2' line in the apt
virtualenv.py, and thought it a bit odd for a python3 package. That
oddness allowed me to fumble the correct search terms to find this (try
googling "python 3 makes a python 2 virtual environment"). In addition
to causing me to question my own sanity, it has been causing a great
deal of confusion on my team (we've only recently started upgrading
servers and workstations from 14LTS to 16LTS - we only run the LTS
versions).

I can appreciate that there is some complexity involved in migrating an
entire operating system to a new python version. However, when I say
`python3 -m virtualenv`, I expect a python3 virtual environment to be
produced. But, on Xenial (and nowhere else), I always get a python2
environment.

The reason we use virtual environments is to keep from bumping into the
python needs of the OS. It seems to me that it would be beneficial to
update any code in Ubuntu which expects a python2 environment to use -p
parameter, rather than requiring *all* python3 code using virtual
environments to know about this change and update for it.

Consider this a vote to restore the original behavior :)

Hey Steve,
Yes I was installing Nvidia proprietary driver for my 960MX in Xubuntu
using " software and updates only" GUI. Software and updates then
additional drivers then selecting the Nvidia driver and apply changes. It
keeps apply changing for hours on end.And doesn't get completed. I am new
to ubuntu and Xubuntu basically. I don't really know why is it not
installing the driver

then
sudo apt-get upgrade

the error message disappeared before the upgrade complete , then i went to
Ubuntu software centre and removed the old version of program and all done.
thank you.

+ On Dell Precision 3250 (Kabylake generation), the backlight cannot be
controlled in sysfs, because it does not exist.
+ With these two patches, keyboard backlight can be controlled in
"/sys/devices/platform/dell-laptop/leds/dell::kbd_backlight".
+
+ [Regression Potential]
+ The regression potential is low. Only newer Dell laptops will be affected,
and it only applies to limited models.

[Bug 1347726] Re: ubuntu14.04 installation hang on "The installer has detected that the following disks have mounted partitions"

2017-05-30 Thread Jb
Just an addendum. The above works for cd (which always forced read
only). To also work for usb I had to add the "-oro" to the command:

# -- Hack starts! block installer mounting /dev/sda1 on /media
# We do this...by mounting the install media (/dev/sd0 or /dev/sd?) onto /media
first!
# so when the installer tries it's bad mount it silently fails
INSTALL_MEDIA=$(mount | grep /cdrom | grep -E -o '/dev/[^ ]*')
mount -oro "$INSTALL_MEDIA" /media
# -- Hack ends

[Bug 1694409] Re: Incorrect package description (and name) of gst-libav1.0 / gstreamer1.0-libav: Refers to libav even though Ubuntu uses FFmpeg instead of libav

2017-05-30 Thread Daniel van Vugt
Yes, the name libav was taken from the internals of ffmpeg's libav*
libraries. If both libav and ffmpeg provide similar such libav*
libraries then then project name "gst-libav" is not totally incorrect.
Just the existence of a project that is called 'libav' which we actually
no longer use is terribly confusing. I blame the people who forked libav
from ffmpeg :)

I don't see any immediate need to fix the package/project name. Shorter
term just fix the package description text. Longer term if libav the
project is properly dead then related downstreams like gst-libav should
become gst-ffmpeg (again?).

Thanks. Sounds like it should be fixed by:
  http://www.bluez.org/release-of-bluez-5-42/

which means the fix entered Ubuntu in 17.04.

Netboot installation of what? Ubuntu server?

So this isn't (necessarily) about the netboot installer (or any
installer) environment, but that in all *installed* environments
(presumably server/cloud only), ethtool is available. Is that
accurate?

And then there is a secondary request for adding it to the installer
environment itself.

Re: [Bug 1694186] Re: Touchpad / TrackPoint no longer work in Lubuntu 17.04

2017-05-30 Thread Brian Standing
Hi, thanks for the response.

I tried this as best as I could follow the instructions. I can't figure
out how to load into the Grub menu from Lubuntu, so can't test the new
kernel. I tried hitting "escape," "shift" and "space" during boot, but
no avail. I also tried editing the /etc/default/grub file to set
GRUB_HIDDEN_TIMEOUT=5.

Any ideas?

[Bug 1694531] Re: 17.10 Install Fails to Start

2017-05-30 Thread Joseph Salisbury
I also downloaded the ISO and tried installing into a VM. I can select
a language, but as soon as I select "Install Ubuntu Sever" the screen
starts flashing.

I'm trying all the other options to see which work and don't work. I'll
also try on Hyper-V just as another data point.

[Bug 1694561] [NEW] kernel panic attempting to boot kernel 4.12-rc3

2017-05-30 Thread Nicholas Stommel
Public bug reported:

I have an HP Spectre x360 Convertible laptop with an Intel 5500U SoC. In
short, I am completely unable to boot kernel 4.12-rc3, even though I
could boot from 4.12-rc2 perfectly fine. The loading screen does not
appear at all, instead GRUB remains stuck on "Loading initial ramdisk
...". Please help. I don't know how to identify what is wrong because I
am completely unable to boot the OS to begin with. Needless to say, this
is a major problem.

[Bug 1694561] Re: kernel panic attempting to boot kernel 4.12-rc3

2017-05-30 Thread Nicholas Stommel
It appears a kernel panic is happening immediately while attempting to boot
4.12-rc3, it doesn't happen on 4.12-rc2.
Adding earlyprintk=efi to the grub command line options, I get the following
message (which explains why the bootloader stops at 'loading initial
ramdisk...'):

This was meticulously copied from a photo of a GRUB screen, this change is
undoubtedly the culprit:

This change causes a kernel panic on my Intel 5500U processor, I
literally cannot boot my computer. This commit results in a serious
regression for multicore Intel CPUs, 4.12-rc3 and drm-tip result in an
immediate kernel panic attempting to boot. This is unacceptable.

Something bad has happened here.

[Bug 1687520] Re: package linux-image-4.8.0-51-generic 4.8.0-51.54~16.04.1 failed to install/upgrade: subprocess new pre-installation script returned error exit status 128

2017-05-30 Thread guy sansom
Update package appears to have stalled.
Initially orange installing progress bar showed install progress was
progressing...
Then "Install" button returned to original appearence saying "Install" again...
Pressing button a second time resulted in "Install" button graying out
Button then just stuck in this grayed out state.

Full reboot does not resolve the issue, with "OS Update" refusing to install.
(Pressing button now does show orange loading bar, but "OS Update" button then
reverts to original state, still saying "Install".)

[Bug 1693544] Re: power loss with kernels newer than 4.1 in Ubuntu 16.04

2017-05-30 Thread Jason Joines
I have been running ~kernel-ppa/mainline/v4.12-rc2 for over 5 days now
with neither screen blinking nor power loss.

I had also tried the vanilla 4.11.2 kernel from kernel.org, which did
have the problem.

It seems like a fix occurred sometime between 4.11.2 and 4.12-rc2.
