Thank you for taking the time to report this crash and helping to make
this software better. This particular crash has already been reported
and is a duplicate of bug #1706097, so is being marked as such.
Can anyone clarify if this issue is caused by simply having the intel
SPI kernel driver enabled & loaded into the kernel, or does this kernel
driver need to be also combined with something in userspace that does
something with the device before the BIOS gets affected?

This sounds like a valid bug still, but low priority if PulseEffects is
not part of standard Ubuntu. So most people will never notice. We're
working on the assumption that many more people want USB and Bluetooth

But still, this sounds like a valid bug.
Hmm, wondering if kernel parameter "pcie_port_pm=off" helps?

Impact: Many users are reporting issues with bios corruption with 17.10.
This seems to stem from enabling the intel-spi-* drivers in the kernel,

It sounds like the definition of an audio device "connecting" is a
little too broad in this case, so understandably annoying.
There is a simple workaround that should work for you though:

Public bug reported:
I run Ubuntu 17.10 live on a usb, after a reboot the laptop wont boot to
windows and an error says that the HDD is likely to fail soon, the laptop
is about 1year old and i dont think that the HDD can fail that soon, the
worst part is that i can't even boot from USB!!!

Hmm, there don't seem to be any instances of the original problem in
those logs.
Can you please try (after reproducing the problem again) attaching full
output from 'journalctl', and also from dmesg? Full logs are fine, but
you may wish to also increase the privacy of the bug report again.
I am seeing this re-appearing in kernel 4.13.0-21-generic:
EDAC sbridge: Couldn't find mci handler
EDAC sbridge: Failed to register device with error -19
Anybody has an idea on how to solve it?

(retracted that categorization as it significantly reduces potential
participants - i self-audited the content and nothing drastic is
revealed; although I filed apport bugs to address it in the future
#1739531 and #1739532)
