Hey guys, just wanted to say I found a workaround! Well as long as
your'e using nautilus.
https://github.com/brunonova/nautilus-hide
It's a nautilus extension that adds files to a ~/.hidden folder that
Nautilus then reads to know what to hide and what not to hide. So far it
seems to work great!
After disappearing for a while, the problem re-appeared.
Luckily the bug is now fixed in Debian. The fix will eventually land in

Public bug reported:
I have thunderbird-locale-ru installed. Moreover, Add-ons manager says
that "Russian (RU) Language Pack" is installed.
Nevertheless I have only "English (United States)" in Spelling button
menu when composing a message.
Russian texts are entirely marked as wrong spelling.
thanks for testing everyone, it'll take a few days until the update
finds its way to xenial-updates

I understand you are frustrated. Your report is a rant, not an
actionable bug report. At best, it's a support request ("Does anybody
have ideas on how I can get a decent email program to work under
Ubuntu?") for which this is not the right place.
Status changed to 'Confirmed' because the bug affects multiple users.
