I was able to install 'steam-latest.deb' from Valve on a chroot without
issues, and then ran 'steam' which installed all the i386 bits, again
without any issues.
If you have problems with the upgrade, try asking for help on a forum or
IRC. There's nothing to be fixed in the Ubuntu archive anyway,
...one more reason to not revert the migration from Qt4 to Qt5 in 2.2.0.

I have the same issue on Ubuntu 18.04.1 LTS (kernel 4.15.0-38-generic)
connected with DisplayLink (driver 4.4.24). I'm connecting through
Display port on a Dell Inspiron 15, and a docker D6000.
The flicker occurs only on the laptop's monitor, and the external
monitors seem fine. No flicker

I can confirm Your full story about crashing PcManFM just point-by-pont. Since
using PcManFM 1.3.0 with LibFM ver. 1.2.5 crashes became not as frequent as it
had been before. But it is not a solution.
