Sorry, the joy was (relatively) short-lived: Even with
`/etc/default/grub` `GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT` setting set to empty, I

Using any vnc viewer it takes 30 seconds before the display comes up. I have
tried with remmina and
vinagre as the viewer.
The only thing in syslog is the following:
