[Bug 1867036] Re: Focal Fossa : chronyd unable to sync system clock

2020-03-12 Thread Christian Ehrhardt 
Hi Cryolithe,
I know that glibc changed things in 2.31 but I thought that is in proposed
still.
I was working (I thought just for test/build issues) on an update in bug
1866753.
It does internal syscall filtering and that changed in glibc.
Out of that I already have PPA:
https://launchpad.net/~ci-train-ppa-service/+archive/ubuntu/3968
Soon that will show up in focal-proposed anyway, but still.

@Cryolithe - would you mind trying if that PPA resolves it for you and report
back here?
- Also are you running -proposed enabled?
- And anyway the report lacks some data - which Ubuntu release are you running
atm?
  $ cat /etc/os-release
  $ apt-cache policy chrony
It would also be great to run apport to get the package upgrade history and all
that right away.
 $ apport-collect 1867036

Finally maybe we should check and compare caps in your system
  $ apt install libcap-ng-utils
  $ pscap -a
  # if the service didn't fail but keeps running with reduced caps

Example output on a container:
root@f:~# pscap -a | grep chrony
1 26441 _chrony chronyd net_bind_service
26441 26442 _chrony chronyd net_bind_service
Example output on a VM:
@f $ pscap -a | grep chrony
1 1707 _chrony chronyd net_bind_service, sys_time +
1707 1708 _chrony chronyd net_bind_service, sys_time +

[Bug 1867092] Re: Failed to set MokListRT: Invalid Parameter

2020-03-12 Thread Steve Langasek
This error is not a result of SecureBoot being supported or not. Why is
shim unable to write to an nvram variable at runtime? That looks like a
problem with the firmware's UEFI implementation.

[Bug 1867198] Re: MIR: bin:libnginx-mod-http-geoip2 from src:nginx

2020-03-12 Thread Christian Ehrhardt 
This is a bit of a special review,
the few packaging bits "on top of normal nginx" are just:
- ./debian/libnginx-mod-http-geoip2.nginx
- ./debian/libnginx-mod.conf/mod-http-geoip2.conf
and a few entries in d/rules
- debian/rules:16:http-geoip2 \
- debian/rules:122:
--add-dynamic-module=$(MODULESDIR)/http-geoip2
- debian/rules:156:
--add-dynamic-module=$(MODULESDIR)/http-geoip2

They all LGTM and don't need a full MIR review "again" for those few lines.
They are a bit complex but that just reflects how things are in nginx until
modules can be proper external sources.

The actual source of it is in:
- debian/modules/http-geoip2/*

And that is the new bit as it is an external source and was not security
reviewed when nginx was handled.
The source is from:
=> https://github.com/leev/ngx_http_geoip2_module

I re-did the sections that would apply for this code:
- does not FTBFS currently
- does not have a test suite that runs at build time
- no translation present, but none needed for this case (not user visible)?
- not a python package, no extra constraints to consider int hat regard
- symbols tracking not applicable for this kind of code.
- Upstream update history is ok
- promoting this does not seem to cause issues for MOTUs that so far
  maintained the package
- no massive Lintian warnings
- no geoip2 related issues int the build log
- no incautious use of malloc/sprintf (as far as I can check it)
- no use of sudo, gksu, pkexec, or LD_LIBRARY_PATH
- no use of user nobody
- no use of setuid
- no dependency on webkit, qtwebkit, seed or libgoa-*
- no embedded source copies (well this IS the embedded source, but no further
ones)

Problems:
- some others have ./debian/modules/watch entries but this one is missing
add this to reduce the chance to miss updates
- the current release is not packaged (but not too far behind)
- one crasher bug open upstream, but resolved in 3.3

TODOs:
- @Andreas / Teward - would you mind bumping the embedded version to 3.3?
  - that is just a crash fix on DB reload
- @Andreas / Teward - would you mind adding geoip2 to ./debian/modules/watch?
- @Security - Since this is sort of the entry point where things might have
more external control to be craftable a security review of just
debian/modules/http-geoip2/* is recommended.
- @Security this raises an extra question if we need to set something up that
this will be properly CVE tracked - could you outline if that will work well?

Assigning security for now.
Once reviewed the MIR Team can re-check if the other todo's were resolved in
the meantime and then I think promotion can happen.

[Bug 1867312] Re: Xorg crash

2020-03-12 Thread Daniel van Vugt
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. It sounds like some part of the system has crashed. To
help us find the cause of the crash please follow these steps:

1. Look in /var/crash for crash files and if found run:
ubuntu-bug YOURFILE.crash
Then tell us the ID of the newly-created bug.

2. If step 1 failed then look at https://errors.ubuntu.com/user/ID where
ID is the content of file /var/lib/whoopsie/whoopsie-id on the machine.
Do you find any links to recent problems on that page? If so then please
send the links to us.

3. If step 2 also failed then apply the workaround from bug 994921,
reboot, reproduce the crash, and retry step 1.

Please take care to avoid attaching .crash files to bugs as we are
unable to process them as file attachments. It would also be a security
risk for yourself.

[Bug 1863222] Re: Sync hwdata 0.333-1 (main) from Debian unstable (main)

2020-03-12 Thread Amr Ibrahim
** Summary changed:

- Sync hwdata 0.333 from Debian
+ Sync hwdata 0.333-1 (main) from Debian unstable (main)

** Description changed:

- Please update hwdata to 0.332, and update the homepage and watch file to
- better track newer versions.
+ Please sync hwdata 0.333-1 (main) from Debian unstable (main)

+ It has updated packaging and newer IDs useful for the new LTS.
+
+ Explanation of the Ubuntu delta and why it can be dropped:
+ * debian/rules:
+ - don't install deprecated changelog
+
+ The Ubuntu delta can be dropped because it's already in the Debian
+ package.
+
+ Changelog entries since current focal version 0.317-0ubuntu2:
+
+ hwdata (0.333-1) unstable; urgency=medium
+
+ * New upstream release: (Closes: #947191)
+ - pnp.ids: update Goldstar to LG Electronics (Closes: #95)
+
+ -- Pino Toscano Thu, 12 Mar 2020 06:45:31 +0100
+
+ hwdata (0.290-2) unstable; urgency=medium
+
+ * Take over the maintainership from Noël Köthe, with his permission.
+ Thanks for maintaining hwdata so far!
+ * Add the configuration for the CI on salsa.
+ * Stop shipping, and installing, a ChangeLog file generated from the
upstream Git repository, as it is not useful.
+ * Move the installation of pnp.ids to a hwdata.install file, instead of
+ copying it manually.
+ * Move the symlinks creation to a hwdata.links file, instead of passing
them as arguments of dh_link.
+ * Stop patching usb.ids, as we do not ship it anyway.
+ * Switch source format to "3.0 (quilt)".
+ * Bump the debhelper compatibility to 12:
+ - switch the debhelper build dependency to debhelper-compat 12
+ - remove debian/compat
+ * Rewrite rules to the dh sequencer, with no specific buildsystem.
+ * Remove dirs file, as the right directories are automatically created.
+ * Stop using the ${shlibs:Depends} substvar, as it does not exist in
arch:all binaries.
+ * Upstream moved to GitHub, so:
+ - switch Homepage to https://github.com/vcrhonek/hwdata
+ - switch watch file to GitHub tags
+ * Add Vcs-* fields.
+ * Remove README.build, as we do not ship usb.ids.
+ * Remove trailing whitespaces in changelog.
+ * Bump Standards-Version to 4.5.0, no changes required.
+ * Mark hwdata as Multi-Arch: foreign.
+ * Set Rules-Requires-Root: no.

[Bug 1867304] Re: LG OLED TV screen resolution not properly detected

2020-03-12 Thread Ubuntu Foundations Team Bug Bot
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. It seems that your bug report is not filed about a
specific source package though, rather it is just filed against Ubuntu
in general. It is important that bug reports be filed about source
packages so that people interested in the package can find the bugs
about it. You can find some hints about determining what package your
bug might be about at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/FindRightPackage.
You might also ask for help in the #ubuntu-bugs irc channel on Freenode.

To change the source package that this bug is filed about visit
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bug/1867304/+editstatus and add the
package name in the text box next to the word Package.

[This is an automated message. I apologize if it reached you
inappropriately; please just reply to this message indicating so.]

2020-03-12 Thread Juan Garcia
Public bug reported:

When I connect my LG OLED B9 TV to my computer, black bars appear at the
top and bottom. The desktop won't scale to the full screen.

Here's some basic info:

Ubuntu 19.10

I tried changing the display settings, but the black bars won't go away.

--- Comment From y...@cn.ibm.com 2020-03-12 22:51 EDT---
We are running it on z15. We have other distros running on this env with FBA.
We don't see that issue.

Here is an additional info I just found out. If I switch the kernel back
to 4.4.0-174-generic, I don't see those errors anymore.

2020-03-12 Thread Daniel van Vugt
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. Please execute the following command only once, as it
will automatically gather debugging information, in a terminal:

apport-collect 1866936

[Bug 1866879] Re: Failure to boot on linux-image-5.3.0-40-generic

2020-03-12 Thread You-Sheng Yang
Hi, both dmesg logs you attached are of 5.3.0-18-generic, not
5.3.0-40-generic. Could you try to locate your last boot of
5.3.0-40-generic by:

  $ journalctl -k -b

where is -1 for last boot, -2 for the second last boot and so on.
Save full output with:

  $ journalctl -k -b  | tee dmesg.5.3.0-40-generic

And, could you also try to boot 5.3.0-40-generic without "quiet splash"
but with "3", which will send you into console mode if successful. No
need to append other debug parameters. It seems kernel has successfully
booted and we may need to diagnose GUI environment rather than linux
kernel. So let's try booting into no GUI mode. If that works, you should
try:

  1. booting with 5.3.0-40-generic normally (with "quiet splash" removed) again,
  2. wait for a few minutes after screen turns blank,
  3. force power off
  4. use `journalctl -b -1` to dump *all* syslog messages and attach them here.

'clipboard-indica...@tudmotu.com',
'user-th...@gnome-shell-extensions.gcampax.github.com'

and then reboot. Since we find so many bugs are caused by extensions,
removing them must be the first thing we try. And they need to be
uninstalled and not just disabled because a buggy extension can still
interfere with the shell.

OK, that sounds like a simple explanation.

On one hand this sounds related to https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/gnome-

2020-03-12 Thread Daniel van Vugt
This is going to be a semi-common issue so I've added it to the list of
performance issues to be investigated: https://trello.com/c/pe5mRmx7

Is it indicator-multiload you are using?

[Bug 875543] Re: [Dell Inspiron 2500] Can't eject cd rom : Inappropriate ioctl for device

2020-03-12 Thread Stephen Allen
I have this problem too. It can also be a mechanical problem, which in
my case I believe it is as the above commands all do what ejecting
manually via the button does. The rubber band driving the pulley to open
the door do wear out and need to be replaced. Since the price of DVD
drives has plummeted in recent years, it appears they are made more
cheaply.

The door wants to open, it just can't because of the pulley band
slipping due to wear and tear.

[Bug 1853830] Re: [MIR] gamemode

2020-03-12 Thread Seth Arnold
I reviewed gamemode 1.5-1 as checked into focal. This shouldn't be
considered a full audit but rather a quick gauge of maintainability.

gamemode tries to improve the Linux gaming experience by switching to more
reliable CPU governors, rescheduling processes, changing io priorities,
inhibiting screensaver, etc.

- CVE History:
  - No CVEs; upstream responded to an issue I filed very quickly
- Build-Depends: debhelper-compat, git, libdbus-1-dev, libinih-dev,
  libinih1, libsystemd-dev, meson, ninja-build, pkg-config, systemd
- pre/post inst/rm scripts automatically generated
- no init scripts
- systemd unit starts gamemode daemon when the dbus binding is needed
- dbus unit starts gamemode daemon when the dbus binding is needed
- no setuid binaries
- binaries gamemoded and gamemoderun
- no sudo fragments
- polkit file: allows active users to run cpugovctl and gpuclockctl
- no udev rules
- tests are not run during build, probably they do not belong on the
build; unknown if they work well enough for autopkgtest, but they look
  promising.
- no cron jobs
- Build logs:
 W: gamemode source: debhelper-compat-file-is-missing
 W: gamemode source: package-uses-deprecated-debhelper-compat-version 1
 E: gamemode source: package-uses-debhelper-but-lacks-build-depends
 E: gamemode source: missing-build-dependency debhelper
 W: gamemode source: newer-standards-version 4.5.0 (current is 4.1.4)

Probably the last warning can be ignored.

- Processes spawned safely
- Memory management looks simple, sane
- File IO paths and contents looked safe enough; some assumptions were
made about how much data the kernel ABI files will return but these are
  probably safe assumptions to make.
- Logging looked safe
- Environment variables looked safe
- No privileged functions, but some privileged kernel operations
- No cryptography
- No temp files
- Networking only via dbus
- No use of webkit
- Provides a polkit backend

- cppcheck only one false positive
  - SEE cppcheck.txt
- many coverity false positives, a few legit findings of small value
- no shellcheck results in shipped code

The issue I filed was responded to very quickly:

https://github.com/FeralInteractive/gamemode/issues/203

And the handful of issues that looked real from Coverity:

game_mode_resolve_wine_preloader() proc_fd = INVALID_PROCFD causes a
game_mode_close_proc(-1) call.

get_gov_state() the ftell(3) call could return -1, which would give a bad
contents VLA and bad input to fread(3).

daemonize() if the open("/dev/null") calls fail, dup2(2) and close(2) are
given bad inputs

Honestly these are all pretty low impact.

I filed https://github.com/FeralInteractive/gamemode/issues/206 for these
issues.

Security team ACK for promoting gamemode to main.

Thanks
