[Bug 1876741] Re: Lenovo X1 boot crash with HDMI cable attached and laptop lid closed
Just a follow up with my investigations in the issue, that might be useful for users in a similar situation. The problem related to grub not loading and fans lifting with no tomorrow is related to Thunderbolt. If I leave any kind of device (network adapter, webcam, whatever) attached to any of the two Thunderbolt ports, then any kind of boot (or reboot) will likely fail like I described above. While looking for solutions, I got into the certification page of my laptop [1] and saw that it says: "This system was tested with 18.04 LTS, running the 4.15.0-1059-oem kernel." Now, this kernel is not present in 20.04, but I've installed 5.6.0-1008-oem and despite of the certification, nothing changes at all. So, the state of things right now: - If I want to be sure the system will load grub, then nothing should be connected to the Thunderbolt port; - If I want to use HDMI output I MUST set "Discrete" (and not "Hybrid") in the BIOS for the display adapter; - If I want GDM/LightDM/Whatsoever to be loaded than the laptop lid should be left open until the end of the boot process, otherwise a blank screen with a single cursor (and a concert of fans) will be the only thing you'll have; Note that this counts for ANY kind of Thunderbolt setting I set inside the BIOS, so likely to be a Grub/EFI compatibility issue, but I have no more clue for now. With this kind of problems I think that writing this laptop is certified by Ubuntu seems ridiculous. I'm available for any kind of suggestions/proposal you have. ** Description changed: [Impact] On new CML PCH-H platforms, many devices are not correctly probed, inclusive of touchpad. [Fix] New device IDs for CML PCH-H are landed in v5.4-rc1 and linux-next. So far the known list are: * 8f05eee67c14: "mmc: sdhci-pci: Add another Id for Intel CML" * 07f047e3fe33: "i2c: i801: Add support for Intel Comet Lake PCH-H" * 5a0feb6287e3: "mtd: spi-nor: intel-spi: Add support for Intel Comet Lake-H SPI serial flash" * dd047dce3a6f: "mfd: intel-lpss: Add Intel Comet Lake PCH-H PCI IDs" The first one has been included in v5.4-rc1, while the rest are currently in linux-next. [Test Case] Verify built kernel on platforms with CML PCH-H. Check if intel-lpss module is loaded, i2c-hid is probed, and so on. [Regression Potential] Low. [Bug 1878378] [NEW] add_mountroot_fail_hook uses wrong target name
Public bug reported: Upon boot of a system that uses LVM2 you get the message: ln: /tmp/mountroot-fail-hooks.d//scripts/init-premount/lvm2: No such file or directory This is because the script /usr/share/initramfs-tools/scripts/init- premount/lvm2 uses the add_mountroot_fail_hook function from /usr/share /initramfs-tools/scripts/functions (which is sources right before), but this function contains a bug that takes the full path of the source script instead of the given argument as name for the target. [Bug 1874521] Re: lttng-modules 2.10.8-1ubuntu2~18.04.1 ADT test failure with linux-kvm 4.15.0-1059.60
I played around with how this might be fixed. The problem is that this could potentially hit all releases that get the split of vmalloc_sync_all() via stable. Minimally I would suspect Bionic to Focal. So I tried to come up with a modification to the module build which checks the kernel header file directly and adapts accordingly. The attached patch is the result. It is made against the Focal version of lttng-modules but with renaming KBuild.common into Makefile.ABI.workarounds it should (actually tested the code in bionic) work in older series, too. ** Patch added: "fix-vmalloc-sync-all.patch" https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/lttng-modules/+bug/1874521/+attachment/5370973/+files/fix-vmalloc-sync-all.patch -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1874521 Title: lttng-modules 2.10.8-1ubuntu2~18.04.1 ADT test failure with linux-kvm 4.15.0-1059.60 To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/lttng-modules/+bug/1874521/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 1874521] Re: lttng-modules 2.10.8-1ubuntu2~18.04.1 ADT test failure with linux-kvm 4.15.0-1059.60
The patch mentioned in comment #2 appears upstream in kernel version 5.6: commit 763802b53a427ed3cbd419dbba255c414fdd9e7c Author: Joerg Roedel Date: Sat Mar 21 18:22:41 2020 -0700 x86/mm: split vmalloc_sync_all() It becomes an obvious problem for lttng in the kvm-kernel only because lttng-modules creates two variants of wrappers for it depending on having CONFIG_KALLSYMS set or not. If it is not set, then the wrapper just blindly calls vmalloc_sync_all() in the hope that it has been exported. And that causes the compile to fail. However, even in the case of KALLSYMS being set, this will cause issues. Just not at compile time. Because then the code looks up the address of vmalloc_sync_all() at runtime and would then print a warning (on x86) about possibly triggering recursive page faults. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1874521 Title: lttng-modules 2.10.8-1ubuntu2~18.04.1 ADT test failure with linux-kvm 4.15.0-1059.60 To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/lttng-modules/+bug/1874521/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 1878275] Re: wayland session hard freezes on login from GDM (X11 session works fine)
Hi Daniel, Thank you for taking a look at my bug report. 1. There are no crash files in /var/crash. 2. https://errors.ubuntu.com/user/27232d1c0322b0e12fbced3d5cc680848662bdab3723e8c5a2ef4f4994f0f37d64c8663e929ae708ddbfce7b00cf9529860901cc62597a8b0b414d4b29fc9792 has three problems reported, but none of them correspond to this issue. I actually do not think there is a crash, rather that some part of the session is waiting for me to enter the keychain passphrase in a way that is hanging the GUI. I verified that if I SSH in from another machine, and enter the passphrase in the SSH session *before* I login from the GDM login screen, everything works fine. [Bug 1875863] Re: ceph -- Unable to mount ceph volume on s390x
** Description changed: + SRU Justification: + == + + [Impact] + + * Unable to mount ceph volumes on big endian systems, like s390x. + + * The mount operation always fails with an IO error. + + * This is caused by an endiness issue in function handle_session where + variable features is always little endian. + + * But test_bit assumes the host order of bytes, hence causes a problem + on big endian systems. + + [Fix] + + * 0fa8263367db9287aa0632f96c1a5f93cc478150 0fa8263367db "ceph: fix + endianness bug when handling MDS session feature bits" + + [Test Case] + + * Setup ceph on s390x. + + * Try to mount a ceph volume. + + * If it mounts correctly the patch is applied and working. + + * Without the patch a mount always fails on big endian / s390x. + + [Regression Potential] + + * There is regression potential with having code changes in ceph's + session handler, which is common code. + + * However, the patch was accepted (slightly changed) by the ceph + maintainers and with that got upstream accepted, too. + + * The patch is fairly limited (5 lines removed, 3 added), hence the + changes are quite traceable. + + __ + When mounting a ceph volume, mount operation fails with an IO error. The problem is always reproducible. Identified potential root cause as kernel endian bug: In the function handle_session() variable @features always contains little endian order of bytes. Just because The feature mask sent by the MDS is little-endian (bits are packed bytewise from left to right in encode_supported_features()). However, test_bit(), called to check features availability, assumes the host order of bytes in that variable. This leads to problems on big endian architectures. Specifically it is impossible to mount ceph volume on s390. A fixup was proposed to convert little-endian order of bytes to the host one. That fixup was modified by ceph maintainers to use existing unpacking means for the conversion. The resulted patch attached. [Bug 1878005] Re: Chrony crashes on install from raspberry pi 2
The "protocol" exit is seen a few times in regard to stricter PID handling, for example: - https://unix.stackexchange.com/questions/493187/systemd-under-ubuntu-18-04-1-fails-with-failed-to-create-user-slice-serv - https://github.com/systemd/systemd/issues/8085 Chrony sets: PIDFile=/run/chronyd.pid And on a normal system that is fine - the pidfile content matches the daemon. But in your log this detection seems to go wrong as seen on "New main PID 1224 does not exist or is a zombie." The start wrapper itself worked fine it seems: ExecStart=/usr/lib/systemd/scripts/chronyd-starter.sh $DAEMON_OPTS (code=exited, status=0/SUCCESS) So it seems to have died later. @Jason - in the error case could you on top of $ systemctl status chrony also run the following: $ cat /run/chronyd.pid $ ps axlf | grep $(cat /run/chronyd.pid) $ ps axlf | grep chrony And attach that output as well - just so we can see if there is a pid left running that hangs and/or if it is fully dead. Also we might want to check directly if and why the service dies. So if above no process is running, pelase do as root: $ source /etc/default/chrony $ /usr/lib/systemd/scripts/chronyd-starter.sh $DAEMON_OPTS $ echo $? $ ps axlf | grep chrony And report that as well. ** Bug watch added: github.com/systemd/systemd/issues #8085 https://github.com/systemd/systemd/issues/8085 -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1878005 Title: Chrony crashes on install from raspberry pi 2 To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/chrony/+bug/1878005/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
