[Bug 1910209] Re: "systemctl stop openvswitch-switch" will remove /var/run/openvswitch

2021-01-07 Thread Christian Ehrhardt 
This is uploaded to Ubuntu 21.04 already.
Just needs some builds and tests to complete.

I'm slightly unsure if this should be SRUed or if - for older releases
we'd ask users to adapt the configuration if affected. I'm slightly
leaning to an SRU but look at James/Frode for a decsion.

[Bug 1910675] [NEW] Can't connect to ANY networks after update to kernel 5.8

2021-01-07 Thread Maia Everett
Public bug reported:

After the 5.8 kernel update, my Ubuntu 20.04.1 installation stopped
seeing any networks, either wireless or USB tethering from my phone. The
ifconfig command only showed the loopback interface.

I rolled back to 5.4.0-59-generic, and it works fine.

The offending package is linux-image-5.8.0-34-generic, version
5.8.0-34.37~20.04.2.

[Bug 1845362] Re: gnome-font-viewer crashed with signal 5 in _XEventsQueued()

2021-01-07 Thread corrado venturini
Same problem on Ubuntu 21.04. started gnome-font-viewer from terminal the
window opens but is unresponsive. closing it I have the crash and a message:
corrado@corrado-n8-hh-0101:~$ gnome-font-viewer

(gnome-font-viewer:4532): Gdk-ERROR **: 08:22:36.317: The program
'gnome-font-viewer' received an X Window System error.
This probably reflects a bug in the program.
The error was 'BadIDChoice (invalid resource ID chosen for this connection)'.
  (Details: serial 1502 error_code 14 request_code 130 (MIT-SHM) minor_code 5)
  (Note to programmers: normally, X errors are reported asynchronously;
   that is, you will receive the error a while after causing it.
   To debug your program, run it with the GDK_SYNCHRONIZE environment
   variable to change this behavior. You can then get a meaningful
   backtrace from your debugger if you break on the gdk_x_error() function.)

[Bug 425423] Re: xdg-open does not interact with /etc/alternatives

2021-01-07 Thread Nicholas Guriev
Management of alternatives requires root privileges and, as you
mentioned, affects every user of computer. Because of this, I think such
a feature will not be implemented in xdg-utils. These programs are
intended primarily for interacting with DE, not core system mechanisms.

[Bug 1905446] Re: Touchpad not working in Ubuntu on Acer Aspire E3-112

2021-01-07 Thread Po-Hsu Lin
Hello,
can you check the following for us:

1. Boot to desktop, check if the Touchpad can be enabled with hotkey Fn
+ F7

2. Try to change Touchpad setting in your BIOS (if applicable), test it
with Touchpad set to "Basic" instead of "Advanced", see if this helps.

3. If not, keep it in Basic mode and try to add i8042.nopnp the following steps:
Edit your grub file /etc/default/grub with:
  sudo nano /etc/default/grub

And add the "i8042.nopnp" option in the following line, to change it from:
  GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash"

into something like:
  GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="i8042.nopnp quiet splash"

Save the file and exit, then execute:
 sudo update-grub

Please attach the dmesg output (sudo dmesg > dmesg.log) after reboot
with this option added to your grub. Thanks!

[Bug 1905446] Re: Touchpad not working in Ubuntu on Acer Aspire E3-112

2021-01-07 Thread Po-Hsu Lin
Oops, please ignore comment #3 for now.

I missed the Fn key part in your description:

"I have a Fn key which I use in Windows to activate/disable the touchpad
and many other things, in Ubuntu, when I press Fn and f7 (the touchpad
activation key in my computer) all the mouse movement is disabled and I
have to restart the system."

so do you mean it's working before you press Fn + F7 on Ubuntu?

And after pressing it can you press it again to bring it back?
Thanks

[Bug 1828239] Re: Discover does updates without permission

2021-01-07 Thread James F.
I now believe this is a known issue, although I do not have a reference.
When there is an update, packagekitd may begin downloading the updates
to save time. This saves time when the superuser authorizes updates be
downloaded and installed. Unfortunately, this doesn't work well for
users like me who have low bandwidth service.

I now suspend packagekitd when I need to use what little download
capacity I have, and resume packagekitd later. I also suspend it when
the size of the updates is large. I try to resume it and begin the
updates when I will be away from the computer for an hour or more.

[Bug 1910639] Re: DMI entry syntax fix for Pegatron / ByteSpeed C15B

2021-01-07 Thread Po-Hsu Lin
Please find attachment for the Hirsute build log

** Attachment added: "log-hirsute-c15b"

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1910639/+attachment/5450516/+files/log-hirsute-c15b

** Description changed:

  [Impact]
  Upstream reports that when compiling the kernel with a48491c65b51 ("Input:
i8042 - add ByteSpeed touchpad to noloop table"), g++ will complain about:
  drivers/input/serio/i8042-x86ia64io.h:225:3: error: ‘.matches’ designator
used multiple times in the same initializer list

  C99 semantics is that last duplicated initialiser wins,
  so DMI entry gets overwritten.

  [Fix]
- * a3a9060ecad030 ("Input: i8042 - unbreak Pegatron C15B")
+ * a3a9060ecad030 ("Input: i8042 - unbreak Pegatron C15B") in linux-next

  This can be cherry-picked into all the affected series.
  Note that patch for bug 1906128 should be applied first.

  [Test]
- I didn't get this error while building the test kernel for bug 1906128
- So the only thing that I can test is to build them again and make sure there
is no other issues.
+ I didn't get this error while building the test kernels for bug 1906128 on
builder kathleen, with fakeroot commands.
+
+ So the only thing that I can test is to build them again and make sure
+ there is no other issues.

  [Where problems could occur]
  If this fix is incorrect it might affect the touchpad support on Pegatron /
ByteSpeed C15B laptop.

[Bug 1910639] Re: DMI entry syntax fix for Pegatron / ByteSpeed C15B

2021-01-07 Thread Po-Hsu Lin
** Description changed:

  [Impact]
  Upstream reports that when compiling the kernel with a48491c65b51 ("Input:
i8042 - add ByteSpeed touchpad to noloop table"), g++ will complain about:
- drivers/input/serio/i8042-x86ia64io.h:225:3: error: ‘.matches’ designator
used multiple times in the same initializer list
+ drivers/input/serio/i8042-x86ia64io.h:225:3: error: ‘.matches’ designator
used multiple times in the same initializer list

  C99 semantics is that last duplicated initialiser wins,
  so DMI entry gets overwritten.

  [Fix]
  * a3a9060ecad030 ("Input: i8042 - unbreak Pegatron C15B")

  This can be cherry-picked into all the affected series.
+ Note that patch for bug 1906128 should be applied first.

  [Test]
  I didn't get this error while building the test kernel for bug 1906128
  So the only thing that I can test is to build them again and make sure there
is no other issues.

  [Where problems could occur]
  If this fix is incorrect it might affect the touchpad support on Pegatron /
ByteSpeed C15B laptop.
  Build the kernel

[Bug 1910537] Re: incorrect audio-EDID on HDMI, blocking audio transmission over HDMI

> Their guess is that the linux notebook is not setting EDID
> configuration correctly and thus not recognized by the ATEM,
> while the cheap LCD screen propably does not care about EDID
> and just plays everything, therefore a wrong EDID information
> would not matter.

EDIDs work the other way round. An EDID is not "set" by Linux. It is
hard-coded in the monitor and only read by the computer. However it is
sadly common for monitor manufacturers (probably not Blackmagic) to ship
monitors that advertise faulty EDID data. That's probably what an "EDID
manager" is to fix, but I don't know of and have no experience with any
on Linux.

I would like to analyse the EDID being advertised by your ATEM, but
Xrandr.txt seems to show it was not plugged into HDMI when you logged
this bug. Please plug it in and then run:

  xrandr --verbose > xrandr2.txt

and attach the resulting file here.

[Bug 1905591] Re: no brightness control after update from 450 to 455

2021-01-07 Thread David Evans
Not me. I'm using Ubuntu 20.04. Until it's made available by the
software update mechanisms I won't touch it.

But "brightness regressions"? We're talking about basic control. How
does passing regression tests helps this issue? Or did people ignore
regression tests before releasing the 450 series?

We can use xrandr(1) but most people will be uncomfortable with this.

[Bug 1910611] Re: sssd startup fails when apparmor in enforcing mode

2021-01-07 Thread Seth Arnold
Hello Richard, it looks like the profile may not have kept up with
changes in the packaging.

The profile has probably been broken ever since:

sssd (2.2.0-1) unstable; urgency=medium

  * New upstream release.
  * control: Bump policy to 4.4.0.
  * control, compat, rules: Bump debhelper to 12.
  * *.install: Updated, some files moved to /usr/libexec.

 -- Timo Aaltonen   Wed, 10 Jul 2019 10:14:09 +0300

Please try adding this line:

  /usr/libexec/sssd/* rmix,

to the file:

/etc/apparmor.d/local/usr.sbin.sssd

Then, try:

sudo apparmor_parser --replace /etc/apparmor.d/usr.sbin.sssd
sudo systemctl restart sssd

Please report back how well this works.

Thanks

[Bug 1910618] [NEW] bcmwl 6.30.223.271+bdcom build fails with kernel 5.8.0-34

2021-01-07 Thread Paul Wilson
Public bug reported:

Ubuntu 20.04.1 LTS
bcmwl-kernel-source_6.30.223.271

I believe the important part of the
/var/lib/dkms/bcmwl/6.30.223.271+bdcom/build/make.log is below.

/var/lib/dkms/bcmwl/6.30.223.271+bdcom/build/src/wl/sys/wl_linux.c: In function
‘wl_reg_proc_entry’:
/var/lib/dkms/bcmwl/6.30.223.271+bdcom/build/src/wl/sys/wl_linux.c:3376:58:

argument is of type ‘const struct file_operations *’

  |   ^~~~

It looks like
/var/lib/dkms/bcmwl/6.30.223.271+bdcom/build/src/wl/sys/wl_linux.c uses the
file_operations structure.

lines 3359-3381 from wl_linux.c

#if LINUX_VERSION_CODE >= KERNEL_VERSION(3, 10, 0)
static const struct file_operations wl_fops = {

};

{
char tmp[32];
sprintf(tmp, "%s%d", HYBRID_PROC, wl->pub->unit);
#if LINUX_VERSION_CODE < KERNEL_VERSION(3, 10, 0)
if ((wl->proc_entry = create_proc_entry(tmp, 0644, NULL)) == NULL) {
WL_ERROR(("%s: create_proc_entry %s failed\n", __FUNCTION__,

== NULL) {
WL_ERROR(("%s: proc_create_data %s failed\n", __FUNCTION__,
tmp));
#endif
ASSERT(0);
return -1;
}

However, it looks like proc_fs.h uses a different structure (proc_ops).

/usr/src/linux-headers-5.8.0-34-generic/include/linux/proc_fs.h
/usr/src/linux-hwe-5.8-headers-5.8.0-34/include/linux/proc_fs.h

and lines 102-107

extern struct proc_dir_entry *proc_create_data(const char *, umode_t,
   struct proc_dir_entry *,
   const struct proc_ops *,
   void *);

struct proc_dir_entry *proc_create(const char *name, umode_t mode,
struct proc_dir_entry *parent, const struct proc_ops *proc_ops);

Looking back at the linux 5.4.0-59 headers, proc_fs.h appears to use the
file_operations structure.

/usr/src/linux-headers-5.4.0-59-generic/include/linux/proc_fs.h
/usr/src/linux-headers-5.4.0-59/include/linux/proc_fs.h

kernel 5.4.0-59
proc_fs.h
lines 44-49

extern struct proc_dir_entry *proc_create_data(const char *, umode_t,
   struct proc_dir_entry *,
   const struct file_operations *,
   void *);

struct proc_dir_entry *proc_create(const char *name, umode_t mode,
struct proc_dir_entry *parent, const struct file_operations *proc_fops);

If this is where the problem lies, I am guessing it is better to try to fix the
Broadcom package/ wl_linux.c than the Linux 5.8.0-34 headers?

[Bug 1910613] [NEW] Crash of gnome shell potentially from "JS ERROR: too much recursion" from app indicators

What Happened:
1) Have gnome-shell-extensions-appindicator enabled
2) The only running app using the indicator was charmtimetracker (

[Bug 1713017] Re: Enable MIDI support

2021-01-07 Thread Henning Sprang
as far as I can see in the bluez package source, the midi option is
enabled now, so it *could* be closed...

But even though it's on, I dont get it working, so I cannot confirm for
sure.

Expectation is: when connecting to a device, I get an alsa sequencer
client, but I dont see that happening.

But also I am not sure if I use it correctly, as i see nearly no documentation
about it, despite one place that said what I mentioned above in what I expect
to happen.
I dont even know for sure if this direction is supposed to be unidirectional or
bi-directional. (e.g. if my laptop can be the midi host, device or both).

I'll keep trying. If anyone has a pointer to docs how it is really
supposed to work, so i can confirm, it would be helpful and this ticket
could be closed.

[Bug 887793] Re: [HP 6710b] Kworker constantly taking about 100% CPU

2021-01-07 Thread Andrew Derry
Tried to read all.. but I think I have different info.
I originally got the 100%CPU on kube and ended up disabling and not starting
any of that, but the 100% CPU started on another process.. just one, so removed
and rebooted.. and again it's not on gnome-shell.. however found the cpulimit
and set gnome-shell to 30 or 40%. It functions now if I don't open too many
windows. (or open a browser with too many by mistake and manage to get ctrl-alt
F2 fast enough to log in and kill it, which usually unfreezes X. I did buy a
1300Mb wifi a while back, and no support for linux, so I dug up the firmware
(dual channel, so 2) and added.. seemed ok for weeks, but that's when KUBE
stuff started chowing down on my CPU.
I'm not good/familiar with this whole bug thing and my time is super valuable
right now, so Please just say if I do something wrong or need to add info.
Also, some mention 20.04, but I've been on 18.04 LTS over 6 months now.
Plus some issues with the firmwares, I have multiple RTL chips. from, prolly 14
years ago now, to the two new ones in the dual band ethernet card. One other
I'm pretty sure is in unused 2 SATA RAID onboard (14 yr old)
Dunno, happy to provide more info but my time is worth to much right now to not
clean install in a couple days if it's not fixed. I can't work with 6 windows..
often over 130 win/tabs and close to 200 on Win 7.1.. but then it gets slow and
warning, now.. an extra window and I better get to ctrl-alt-F2 quick or hard
boot.
Let me know. I hope it tells me if there's replies.. (will look a bit)

might try pull the wifi.. but wanted to do some stuff.. but have much
more critical todo anyway.

Cheers - Andrew

[Bug 1896119] Re: Catting the SecureBoot efivar in /sys hangs

2021-01-07 Thread Jeff Lane
For context, the update from the customer was that

cat /sys/firmware/efi/efivars/SecureBoot-8be4df61-93ca-11d2-aa0d-
00e098032b8c

actually works fine UNTIL he runs the cert suite, after which point it
hangs.

So I wonder if not properly closing the file leaves this in a bad state
somehow once the script is killed with a ctrl-c...

As I said, I'm still not convinced this actually solves the issue, but
we'll see. I do hope this is all the issue is.

[Bug 1136644] Re: gedit search function is not practical anymore

While it won't address your UX annoyances, I have filed an issue
upstream proposing an approach to make live search faster for big files:

[Bug 1896119] Re: Catting the SecureBoot efivar in /sys hangs

2021-01-07 Thread Jeff Lane
after some more commentary from the customer, I'm still not convinced
that this isn't related to the hardware itself, HOWEVER, while doing a
bit more deubgging I noticed that the boot_mode_test.py script opens
files but does not properly close them (expecting python to close them
on exit?)

So while this may or may not resolve the hang that was reported when the
secureboot test runs, I can at least fix this a bit so that we properly
close the files after reading them.

[Bug 1902497] Re: Hibernation fails Lubuntu 20.10 and 21.04

2021-01-07 Thread Walter Lapchynski
To add to that, it looks like the way to implement that is
`NotShowIn=LXQt` in lubuntu-default-settings but we've got
https://github.com/lxqt/lxqt/issues/1743 keeping that from working.
