After an upgrade to 20.04, Skype could not detect video and sound devices
anymore on my computer. Other software such as cheese or VLC worked fine.

But I got no problem with the Kernel 5.4.59 on Raspbian.
Kurt Bonatz reported a problem with the 5.4.0. Maybe there is a

Just noting that I had this same issue on my Dell XPS 9550 laptop, which
has a 3840x2160 display. The workaround of setting GFXMODE=800x600 in
the grub config worked for me too, thanks! And of course had the nice
side effect of actually making the grub menu readable. :-)

My guess is that you have more than one 'lshw' on your system such as a
compiled version (/usr/sbin) of 'lshw' and our Ubuntu package
(/usr/bin), and when you are executing 'lshw' it calls the compiled one
and not the one coming from our package.
You can confirm it by doing :

Wow, really? But if multiple Linux partitions (common since the days of
LILO) are discouraged now, why is os-prober searching for Linux distros
on unmounted partitions and adding them to grub.cfg? If it's just for
Windows and anything else isn't supported, maybe it should only add
Windows installs.

Yes. I had built from the source. lshw-B.02.18 and then lshw-02.18.85.
I had enabled proposed but it had no effect. Perhaps I had downloaded
too early?
Anyway, after updating and trying as you suggest /usr/bin/lshw then
everything works as expected.

That one worked. Freshly installed, I had 4.15.0-29 and after enabling
proposed and upgrading I was left with 4.15.0-135 That kernel worked just
fine.
How long until I can expect to see the proposed kernels for Focal/Groovy?

I think this issue is also affecting Rails 6.1 on the system ruby/ruby-
bundler packages. Testing on the latest Ubuntu Focal stable packages:
