[Bug 22336] Re: laptop overheats when performing CPU intensive tasks.
Hi All, I've managed to shutdown Powernowd as per the instructions but can't use ondemand. I don't have the /sys/devices/system/cpu/cpu0/cpufreq/scaling_governor directory on my laptop, under cpu0 the only directory I have is cache. I've tried to create the directories using sudo but get an Operation Not Permitted error. Can anyone please help or offer other suggestions? [Bug 59734] offb consoles are blank
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: linux-image-2.6.15-26-powerpc When the Open Firmware framebuffer (offb) is used, the splash screen does not appear on my computer--instead there is only a white screen. In graphical runlevels Xorg eventually launches and displays fine, but the virtual consoles are blank and unworking. Using rivafb works perfectly, displaying the splash and VTs. Unfortunately I cannot convince the kernel to use it, without recompiling the kernel. [Bug 59741] Nautilus thumnails - Not all thumbnails are created equal
Public bug reported: I would just like to draw attention to two issues with thumbnails being created without frames and/or cropped if source image is portrait. This is more of an aesthetic issue than anything major. When browsing directories in Nautilus in list view at any given view %, in my case the default 50%: 1) Some thumbnails are created without frames, this seems dependent on the file-type from my experience, for instance .jpg, .png seems to receive frames in nautilus (which look very nice imo) but, for instance, .psd files do not receive frames. 2) If an image is portrait, i.e. height is greater than width, then they seem to be cropped, such that the bottom of the thumbnail is hidden beneath the next list line in nautilus. ** Affects: Ubuntu Importance: Untriaged Status: Unconfirmed -- Nautilus thumnails - Not all thumbnails are created equal https://launchpad.net/bugs/59741 -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 59663] Re: Please build without gdk-pixbuf/gtk
2006/9/9, Andrew Ash: Maybe that artwork has to do with the iPod's ability to display photos/cover art. Libgpod would need to work with photos to scale them down to iPod size for transfer. Maybe. That optional dependency means installing 6.8 extra MB, which once compressed with squashfs are about 2.5 MB. The space on a live-CD is precious, and I dont' think that feature (assuming Amarok made use of it) is worth 2.5 MB of a Kubuntu live-CD . [Bug 59641] Kopete should not depend on XMMS
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: kopete I'm annoyed by Kopete's dependency on XMMS (I mean the Kopete package from Jonathan Riddell's KDE 3.5.4 Kubuntu packages). I searched in the KDE Bug Tracking System, and found bug 67653: http://bugs.kde.org/67653 It turns out that the dependence against XMMS is *optional*. Could you please remove that dependency from Kubuntu's KDE 3.5.4 Kopete package? Thank you. ** Affects: kopete (Ubuntu) Importance: Wishlist Assignee: Kubuntu Team Status: Confirmed -- Kopete should not depend on XMMS https://launchpad.net/bugs/59641 -- kubuntu-bugs mailing list kubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/kubuntu-bugs
[Bug 59744] installer blanks screen - no install possible
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: base-installer I'm currently running into problems trying to install kubuntu dapper on one of my pc's. this one has an sis graphics onboard which is obviously not recognised by the installer, so the cd boots, but then screen gets dark, monitor goes offline and nothing more. it just seems the installer switches to some unsupported X or framebuffer mode. maybe it is also of interest, that debian sarge installer works fine (just checked for reference), although switching to framebuffer as well (otherwise, I would not see the graphic debian logo ?). ** Affects: base-installer (Ubuntu) Importance: Untriaged Status: Unconfirmed -- installer blanks screen - no install possible https://launchpad.net/bugs/59744 -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 51573] Re: Please update HPLIP to 1.6.7
According to the Debian package maintainer (Henrique de Moraes Holschuh) HPLIP 0.9.11, 0.9.10, 0.9.9 and 0.9.8 had some issues and regressions compared to HPLIP 0.9.7, therefore he has kept HPLIP 0.9.8+ from entering debian/testing. HPLIP 1.6.7 was allowed to enter debian/testing since it fixes a number of issues for CUPS 1.2 and supports many new printers. I can't remember if gst was updated yesterday or early this morning, though. Come to think of it, there was something else that happened yesterday. With an update came the Orca screen reader, and I thought it'd be fun to try. Then, an accessibility daemon was automatically configured to launch with every program. [Bug 59695] Re: [Bug 59695] Re: default value in power.sh potentially kills laptop disks
I can confirm this behavior with my T43 Thanks for confirming. So now we'll have to determine sane default values. I did some very unscientific tests using the command smartctl -d ata -a /dev/sda | grep 193; hdparm -B 180 /dev/sda; sleep 600; \ smartctl -d ata -a /dev/sda | grep 193; hdparm -B 255 /dev/sda and continuing to work normally. After 10 minutes I checked the output. Here are some values: -B 128 - 23 cycles in 10 minutes -B 160 - 29 in 10' -B 180 - 0 in 10' -B 196 - 0 in 10' -B 200 - 0 in 10' So even -B 160 leads to 3 cycles per minute (180 per hour), leading to a lifespan of 600,000/180/24=139 days (of continuous battery powered use). Note that only a few years ago 300,000 load/unload cycles was a common value. What is remarkable is the sharp drop between 180 and 196. Could somebody else report some values for his system? [Bug 59757] 4GiB limit on some DVD reads on Vaio VGN-FE15GP
Public bug reported: Using Dapper Drake Kubuntu, reading in a nearly-full, single-sided DVD using a command like: dd bs=2048 if=/dev/hda of=/dev/dvdimage.iso results in a truncated file, with a size slightly smaller than 4GiB. Also, mounting the DVD and trying to copy it to another directory results in I/O errors on reading some files - possibly ones that reside past a 4GiB boundary on the DVD. cp -a /mnt/* . The problem does not occur under Scientific Linux 4.3 (live CD) when loaded into RAM (to free up the optical drive), and the DVD reads okay under Windows XP Professional and, interestingly, the same version of Kubuntu running on an old 233MHz Pentium box. Any ideas? [Bug 59760] Shutdown button isn't clickable if you hover above it before the dialog appears
Public bug reported: When I choose SystemShutdown or click on the shutdown button on the panel, and move the mouse to the position where the button in the dialog is going to appear, before the dialog is displayed, the button isn't clickable (and it isn't displayed in 'hover' state) until I move the mouse away and back on the button again. This happens with all buttons in the dialog (even the Cancel button) on both my laptop, my desktop system and my parent's system, both with and without Xgl. The firmware upload utility should show it. It may also be possible to read version information with Linux utilities, but exact specifications from the firmware maker would be required.
