One alternative is to include a single widescreen image, which will then
be cropped from the sides on a 4:3 screen with the zoom setting.

[Bug 22336] Re: laptop overheats when performing CPU intensive tasks.

2006-09-10 Thread GuitarFingers
Hi All,

I've managed to shutdown Powernowd as per the instructions but can't use
ondemand. I don't have the
/sys/devices/system/cpu/cpu0/cpufreq/scaling_governor directory on my
laptop, under cpu0 the only directory I have is cache. I've tried to
create the directories using sudo but get an Operation Not Permitted
error. Can anyone please help or offer other suggestions? This error is
becoming a real problem and I'd prefer not to have to install something
other than Ubuntu, I've finally got everything configured exactly how I
like it :-(

[Bug 59734] offb consoles are blank

2006-09-10 Thread Dave Vasilevsky
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: linux-image-2.6.15-26-powerpc

When the Open Firmware framebuffer (offb) is used, the splash screen
does not appear on my computer--instead there is only a white screen. In
graphical runlevels Xorg eventually launches and displays fine, but the
virtual consoles are blank and unworking.

Using rivafb works perfectly, displaying the splash and VTs.
Unfortunately I cannot convince the kernel to use it, without
recompiling the kernel. The kernel parameters video=riva or video=rivafb
should work, perhaps the module needs to be in the initrd for that?

My computer is an Apple G4 Quicksilver, specs here: http://apple-
history.com/?model=g4_quicksilver . All components are stock except for
upgraded RAM.

[Bug 59741] Nautilus thumnails - Not all thumbnails are created equal

2006-09-10 Thread mmnz
Public bug reported:

I would just like to draw attention to two issues with thumbnails being
created without frames and/or cropped if source image is portrait.

This is more of an aesthetic issue than anything major.

When browsing directories in Nautilus in list view at any given view %,
in my case the default 50%:

1) Some thumbnails are created without frames, this seems dependent on
the file-type from my experience, for instance .jpg, .png seems to
receive frames in nautilus (which look very nice imo) but, for instance,
.psd files do not receive frames.

2) If an image is portrait, i.e. height is greater than width, then
they seem to be cropped, such that the bottom of the thumbnail is hidden
beneath the next list line in nautilus.

[Bug 59663] Re: Please build without gdk-pixbuf/gtk

2006-09-10 Thread aka Quique
2006/9/9, Andrew Ash:

Maybe that artwork has to do with the iPod's ability to display
photos/cover art. Libgpod would need to work with photos to scale them
down to iPod size for transfer.

Maybe.
That optional dependency means installing 6.8 extra MB, which once
compressed with squashfs are about 2.5 MB.
The space on a live-CD is precious, and I dont' think that feature
(assuming Amarok made use of it) is worth 2.5 MB of a Kubuntu live-CD
.

Maybe a fair solution would be building two versions of the library,
one with gdk-pixbuf support, and another without.

[Bug 59641] Kopete should not depend on XMMS

2006-09-10 Thread aka Quique
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: kopete

I'm annoyed by Kopete's dependency on XMMS (I mean the Kopete package
from Jonathan Riddell's KDE 3.5.4 Kubuntu packages).

I searched in the KDE Bug Tracking System, and found bug 67653:
http://bugs.kde.org/67653

It turns out that the dependence against XMMS is *optional*.
Could you please remove that dependency from Kubuntu's KDE 3.5.4 Kopete package?

Thank you.

[Bug 59744] installer blanks screen - no install possible

2006-09-10 Thread hoernerfranz
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: base-installer

I'm currently running into problems trying to install kubuntu dapper on one of
my pc's.
this one has an sis graphics onboard which is obviously not recognised by the
installer, so the cd boots, but then screen gets dark, monitor goes offline
and nothing more.
it just seems the installer switches to some unsupported X or framebuffer mode.
maybe it is also of interest, that debian sarge installer works fine (just
checked for reference),
although switching to framebuffer as well (otherwise, I would not see the
graphic debian logo ?).

I can't reproduce it anymore too. Since I reported the bug I've done
some upgrades and apparently it's fixed.

Please merge hplip with hplip 1.6.7-2 from debian/unstable (main).
It supports the newest printers and has many bug fixes, especially for faxing.
In attachment you find the debian changelog since hplip 0.9.11-2.

With readcd I can read in a complete DVD-ROM where before dvdread says

can play this dvd without problem. Is this a problem in libdvdread?

[Bug 51573] Re: Please update HPLIP to 1.6.7

2006-09-10 Thread Pascal De Vuyst
According to the Debian package maintainer (Henrique de Moraes Holschuh)
HPLIP 0.9.11, 0.9.10, 0.9.9 and 0.9.8 had some issues and regressions
compared to HPLIP 0.9.7, therefore he has kept HPLIP 0.9.8+ from

HPLIP 1.6.7 was allowed to enter debian/testing since it fixes a number
of issues for CUPS 1.2 and supports many new printers.

[Bug 53754] Re: ata_piix problem with Intel ICH7 chipset

2006-09-10 Thread Christian Mayrhuber
This bug seems to be a duplicate of
[Bug 38760] Re: ata timeout with sony vgn-s580 laptop

I don't know why but those SATA timeout messages occur less frequently for me if
I add the ahci module to /etc/modules.

Acer Aspire 9412WLMI
Kubuntu Dapper with latest security updates.
ii linux-image-2.6.15-26-686 2.6.15-26.46
ii linux-restricted-modules-686 2.6.15.24
ii nvidia-kernel-common 20051028+1
ii nvidia-glx 1.0.8762+2.6.15.11-3

I had to add the boot parameters video=vga16fb:off video=vesafb:off
to prevent hard lockups due to bad interaction of nvidia and framebuffer
drivers.

Hibernation, neither suspend to disk, nor suspend to RAM, works for me at all.
The laptop just freezes with a black screen.
I tried KPowersafe and KLaptop with the same results.

[Bug 59752] Binary Nvidia driver does not allow optimal resolution on x86_64

The problem is that on the setting the resolution to 1280x1024 in

1024x786. (details can be seen in the xorg log) If I change the driver

[Bug 17878] Re: hard disk being accessed every 4 sec.

2006-09-10 Thread padre999
Hi everybody.

I have the same annoying problem on my Desktop since a while. This is on Ubuntu
Dapper 6.06.
But I have to say that the write access to the disk is every 5 secs and not 4
secs on my computer. They are blocks of about 30-70 kb written to the disk as
GkrellM tells me. There are also some threads in the Ubuntu forums dealing with
the issue:

http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=36976
http://www.ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?p=660011
http://forum.ubuntuusers.de/topic/22098/ (German)

A temporary remedy is a sudo laptop-mode start.

This happens every time. I assume it has something to do with python-gst (or
python-gst0.10), because it doesn't only affect Ubuntu's Quod Libet package,
but also upstream straight from SVN. When removing all references to gst in the
source code, the application launches, but then won't playback anything, due to
the audio output code being removed, obviously.

I can't remember if gst was updated yesterday or early this morning,
though.

Come to think of it, there was something else that happened yesterday.
With an update came the Orca screen reader, and I thought it'd be fun to
try. Then, an accessibility daemon was automatically configured to
launch with every program. But I went to Assistive Technology
Preferences and disabled it, so that couldn't be the problem, as it
still won't work, right?

[Bug 59721] Re: Installer crashed

2006-09-10 Thread Vassilis Pandis
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 47046 ***

Thanks for your report. At present, you must reformat system partitions
(e.g. /, /boot, /usr, or /var) during installation; the fact that the
partitioner doesn't warn you about this is also bug 47046, and is fixed
in dapper-updates. If you are upgrading an existing installation, then
please see http://wiki.ubuntu.com/DapperUpgrades rather than using this
installer.

[Bug 59695] Re: [Bug 59695] Re: default value in power.sh potentially kills laptop disks

2006-09-10 Thread Gilles Schintgen
I can confirm this behavior with my T43
Thanks for confirming. So now we'll have to determine sane default values.
I did some very unscientific tests using the command

smartctl -d ata -a /dev/sda | grep 193; hdparm -B 180 /dev/sda; sleep 600; \
smartctl -d ata -a /dev/sda | grep 193; hdparm -B 255 /dev/sda

and continuing to work normally. After 10 minutes I checked the output.

Here are some values:
-B 128 - 23 cycles in 10 minutes
-B 160 - 29 in 10'
-B 180 - 0 in 10'
-B 196 - 0 in 10'
-B 200 - 0 in 10'

So even -B 160 leads to 3 cycles per minute (180 per hour), leading to a
lifespan of 600,000/180/24=139 days (of continuous battery powered use).
Note that only a few years ago 300,000 load/unload cycles was a common value.

What is remarkable is the sharp drop between 180 and 196. Could somebody else
report some values for his system?

Does anyone know how the -B parameter is interpreted or is that left up to the
device?

[Bug 59757] 4GiB limit on some DVD reads on Vaio VGN-FE15GP

2006-09-10 Thread Nontagonist
Public bug reported:

Using Dapper Drake Kubuntu, reading in a nearly-full, single-sided
DVD using a command like:

dd bs=2048 if=/dev/hda of=/dev/dvdimage.iso

results in a truncated file, with a size slightly smaller than 4GiB.

Also, mounting the DVD and trying to copy it to another directory
results in I/O errors on reading some files - possibly ones that
reside past a 4GiB boundary on the DVD.

cp -a /mnt/* .

The problem does not occur under Scientific Linux 4.3 (live CD)
when loaded into RAM (to free up the optical drive), and the DVD
reads okay under Windows XP Professional and, interestingly,
the same version of Kubuntu running on an old 233MHz Pentium
box.

Any ideas?

[Bug 59760] Shutdown button isn't clickable if you hover above it before the dialog appears

2006-09-10 Thread Patrick Wijnings
Public bug reported:

When I choose SystemShutdown or click on the shutdown button on the
panel, and move the mouse to the position where the button in the dialog
is going to appear, before the dialog is displayed, the button isn't
clickable (and it isn't displayed in 'hover' state) until I move the
mouse away and back on the button again.

This happens with all buttons in the dialog (even the Cancel button) on
both my laptop, my desktop system and my parent's system, both with and
without Xgl.

This happens every time and is easy to reproduce (especially on slow systems):
1. Click the Shutdown button on the panel
2. Move the mouse to the position where the Shutdown-button in the dialog is
going to appear before it actually appears (you have to be fast!)
3. Try to click the button

All systems are running Dapper (with the new shutdown dialog)

This happens every time and is easy to reproduce (especially on slow systems):
  1. Click the Shutdown button on the panel
- 2. Move the mouse to the position where the Shutdown-button in the dialog is
going to appear (you have to be fast!)
+ 2. Move the mouse to the position where the Shutdown-button in the dialog is
going to appear before it actually appears (you have to be fast!)
  3. Try to click the button

All systems are running Dapper (with the new shutdown dialog)

[Bug 59754] Re: An open standards-based game test crashes totem in firefox

2006-09-10 Thread Sebastien Bacher
Thanks for your bug. The popup flood might be due to the website and not
to totem

[Bug 59747] Re: Evolution crashes when dragging an image onto

2006-09-10 Thread Sebastien Bacher
Thanks for your bug. That might be a duplicate of bug #45279. Could you
get a backtrace with evolution-data-server-dbg and evolution-dbg
installed?

Run evolution with:
- gdb evolution
(gdb) run
... get the crach
(gdb) thread apply all bt

2006-09-10 Thread Sarah Hobbs
I've asked riddell to take his current edgy sources, and build them for
dapper.

[Bug 53746] Re: Firewire connection not being correctly mounted in 6.06

2006-09-10 Thread Stefan Richter
The firmware upload utility should show it. It may also be possible to
read version information with Linux utilities, but exact specifications
from the firmware maker would be required.

If you can open up the enclosure easily and without voiding warranty,
check what chip is in there before trying a firmware upload. In
principle, firmware uploaders properly detect types of chips and own
chips vs. chips from other makers, but better stay on the safe side.
