[Bug 118732] Wireless drivers missing from Fiesty 7.04 - were there in 6.06
Public bug reported: Kubuntu 7.04 Fiesty release seems to be missing important wireless LAN drivers. I was using 6.06 which supported my wireless card, a Belkin F5D5000 Wireless NIC (in Windows, it uses a RealTek driver - rtl8180.sys - if that helps), right out of the box, so to speak. I was able to use my wireless as soon as I installed the 6.06 release. However, when I fresh-reinstalled to 7.04, the wireless NIC didn't show up in the list of NIC's. eth0 is there as my wired NIC (which is in the comp but not in use) but there is no wlan0 or eth1 or anything. Further tests showed that Kubuntu is seeing the device in the PCI devices listing, but it just doesn't show up to Fiesty as a wireless NIC. I searched for a driver that may be related to the NIC but can't seem to locate one anywhere on the computer, so I've come to the conclusion that they were accidentally left out. an ifconfig shows the wired-ethernet card and a loopback connection, not the wireless. ** Affects: Ubuntu Importance: Undecided Status: Unconfirmed -- Wireless drivers missing from Fiesty 7.04 - were there in 6.06 https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/118732 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is the bug contact for Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 117314] Re: latest kernel(2.6.20-16.28) update gives boot problems
AllanEising: Try and remove all instances of /dev/s??? from your /etc/fstab , /boot/grub/menu.lst and /etc/initramfs-tools/conf.d/resume files and replace them with UUIDs. The blkid command will list the UUIDs for all partitions. Do this in 2.6.20-15 so you can see the old /dev/s??? syntax and match it to its UUID. Please be careful and *take a back up of your /etc/fstab* because failure to make this change correctly can stop your system booting into any kernel. I repeat, this change is not for the faint of heart (although if you do slip up you can probably use a LiveCD to copy the backup /etc/fstab back to the right place). I'm not sure what the best practice for DVD/CDROMs is /dev/s??? references is... I'm speculating that using the /dev/cdrom symlinks might be OK over in Bug #117413 but haven't seen any word that this is the correct thing to do. -- latest kernel(2.6.20-16.28) update gives boot problems https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/117314 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is the bug contact for Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

Perhaps the reason why it didn't automaticly convert to UUID in fstab was because I had installed it using the Alternative installer HERD4 to get the bare bones install and afterwards installed GNOME-CORE, XORG, GDM. And then some more packages when I needed them. I like to ave a system with only the packages I need. /offtopic Question about LP: When in status it says need info. And when somebody replies with the desired info. Must that induvidual then change the status or just wait and a DEV working here will change it. The reason I am asking this is because I have seen quite some LP leports where it says NEEDS INFO and the required info has been uplouded but the status still says NEEDS INFO and no DEV have responded. Also a similar thing happened to this LP report. This is the reason why I changed the status to 'confirmed'. What should I do next time? [Bug 118739] Entered text is invisible in black terminals
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: elvis Upon installing elvis, and firing up elvisnox, I am surprised to discover that none of the text I enter, whether in insert mode or command mode, is at all visible on the terminal (which has a black background). The only visible text is a black-on-green mode indication string, and a blue-on-black indicator of the current line and column numbers. Text is visible in a black-on-white terminal (such as the default settings for rxvt). This is using the default configuration, nothing whatsoever was changed after installation. This is surprisingly poor behavior; elvis should not need to change the foreground color to anything other than normal mode (perhaps via sgr0). If it does do so, then it ought to specifically set the background color as well, and fill it entirely, so that we can have a guarantee of visible text. This is particularly problematic since elvis installs itself to the alternatives system for vi with a very high priority, meaning that if the vi alternatives are set to auto, the vi command is extremely likely to fire up elvis if it is installed. ** Affects: elvis (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: Unconfirmed -- Entered text is invisible in black terminals https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/118739 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is the bug contact for Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

$ uname -a Linux hugomobil 2.6.20-16-generic #2 SMP Wed May 23 01:46:23 UTC 2007 i686 GNU/Linux I wonder if a lack of free hard disk space is a potential reason for the observed phenomena (freezing with no error message)? Maybe the upgrade from 6.10 to 7.04 has consumed some disk space reserves I had before? [Bug 104009] Re: [feisty beta] linux-image 2.6.20-14 halts during boot
The alternative installer should also have installed an fstab with UUID, but maybe it wasn't ready yet in Herd 4. About LP: You can set it back to Unconfimed when you have answered. However, it is really the one who asks the questions (that would be me here) that should react when answers are given. Sorry, I missed this one. I think that the newest, recommended practice is that the one who asks assigns the bug to himself until answers are given. Then he can follow up on his assigned bugs, and set the bug to Confirmed/Unconfirmed/etc depending on the information given. If you see some bugs untouched for a long time with Needsinfo, but questions are answered, please feel free to set them back to what they were before (see their activity log). -- [feisty beta] linux-image 2.6.20-14 halts during boot https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/104009 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is the bug contact for Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 118742] Potential typo in /ubiquity/scripts/install.py
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: ubiquity In the method mount_source() the code misc.execute('mount', '-t', 'unionfs', '-o', 'dirs=' + map(lambda x: '%s=ro' % x, self.mountpoints), 'unionfs', self.source) occurs at lines 684-686 (in the 1.5.1 source I downloaded). I think the middle line doesn't make sense, apparently concatenating a string with a list of strings, and that you probably meant 'dirs=' + ':'.join(map(lambda x: '%s=ro' % x, self.mountpoints)), instead. I think you want to join() on ':' since the unionfs man page says colon is the separator for directories in the dirs option. Sorry if I'm wasting your time. I was reading the install.py code while waiting for the installer to finish (yeah, I was kind of bored :) ) and I noticed that line that doesn't seem to make sense.
