Re: [Bug 123904] Re: Candidate revision w3m-el_1.4.4-3ubuntu1

2007-07-11 Thread Reinhard Tartler
Scott Kitterman [EMAIL PROTECTED] writes:

Wouldn't it be better to make the package compatible with compat 5 than
to drop it to and older version?

Letting it at compat 4 would probably make it easier to backport to
earlier versions of ubuntu that don't ship debhelper ( 5)
yet. Therefore I don't see a urgent need to upgrade. However, some
bugfixes have been deferred to higher compats levels, so upgrading might
be a good idea in this way. oh well...

[Bug 83243] Re: keyboard problem after resume from hibernation

2007-07-11 Thread ssh
I have a 6400 with an ATI X1300 video card, and am using the fglrx
drivers. This appeared for me with a semi-stock /etc/default/acpi-
support.

I had already predefined:

MODULES_WHITELIST=fglrx ipw3945

Oddly, by also appending:

POST_VIDEO=false

My keyboard started working without fail from manually calling acpi's
shutdown script. I've slept it a few times, and it works perfectly
fine.

Here's a snippit of my dmesg:

[Bug 124473] Re: Installing libghc6-gtk-dev takes forever (really doesn't complete)

2007-07-11 Thread Paulo Tanimoto
When I installed it, a while ago, I noticed the same thing. I thought
my computer had frozen. But after a long period it did complete and it
works. It definitely did not take 45 min, though. I'd say that for
about 5 minutes I couldn't even move the mouse cursor. This happened
both on my laptop and on my desktop, both core 2 duo machines.

Maybe we should take a look at the (pre/post) installation scripts.

[Bug 123934] Re: [debdiff] bunch of fixes for libvisual-plugins

2007-07-11 Thread DarkMageZ
** Description changed:

This most likely fixes bugs #103393 #109409 (thanks raof for testing
that the patch does indeed fix a JESS 64-bit crasher)

Also disables the gdkpixbuf plugin as it is just a boring blank plugin
(unless someone wants to fix it up so it'll load images from the users
home directory... but then it's not really a visualization)

Fixes an issue wit the configure script so that lv_analyzer actually
  gets built.

fixes lv_flower lv_gltest nastyfft so that they actually get
- compiled against libgl so that they will work.
+ compiled against libgl so that they will work. (#115502)

[Bug 123849] Re: Please sync ubuntustudio-screensaver from the Ubuntu Studio repository (main)

2007-07-11 Thread Emmet Hikory
For a no-change upload, a sync is best (see
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/SyncRequestProcess regarding uploads vs. sync
requests). On the other hand, now that the package has been rejected by
an archive admin, and a determination made that a no-change upload is
not correct (see previous comment for sample requested changes),
processing the changed upload through REVU is the correct solution.
Please retitle and redescribe this bug to point towards REVU, and upload
a new revision of ubuntu-studio-screensaver including the requested
changes. It may be useful to add a comment in REVU indicating this bug
as a reference.

That's because a kernel command line option has no affect on kernel

- sudo vi /etc/modprobe.d/usb-core-options
- Add a line with options usbcore autosuspend=0, without quotes
- sudo update-initramfs -u

Reboot, and hopefully things will work as expected.

[Bug 125199] feisty alternate fails to install on older box

2007-07-11 Thread GercoKees
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: debian-installer

On a somewhat older box the feisty installer fails on 85% of installing base

I will attach the hardware-info.txt, partman.log and syslog to this post.
As a workaround i tried to install dapper-alternate. This gave a similar
behavior, freezing at different points in the installing the base-file system.
After 6 or 7 times the dapper-alternate install succeeded.

Issue 121038 might be related, though that is not an alternate-install

Re: [Bug 1] Re: Microsoft has a majority market share

2007-07-11 Thread Toni Ruottu

 Linux is fragmented.

That is why you don't consider Linux an operating system, and that is
also why you use Ubuntu in first place. Ubuntu is not fragmented in that
way. I see no reason why you should expect Ubuntu to be compatible with
some other operating system, say Fedora. It happens to be far more
compatible with Fedora than Windows ever was, but that is a good feature
and not an issue.

I think that Ubuntu should invite the OpenSource world to work in team
and not in all separate projects, each point of view is good, we just
need to find a way to fusion all ideas.

Pouring all administrative tasks to one entity will probably just crush
it, not make it stronger. Are there some specific synergy benefits you
are looking for. Never the less, Ubuntu is already allowing anyone to
join.

 tons of wasted work.

Duplicating some functionality is not necessarily waste. It is useful to
compete. Multiple copies of certain functionality also allows you to
fall back to another one when the implementation you normally use fails.

For an exemple, KDE and Gnome have too great way to abord the Desktop
environment, why these teams don't work together to give to user more
choice in a all-in-one Desktop solution.

They are. See http://freedesktop.org/

 Fax functionnalities

The (and any other missing) feature is missing because no-one is
interested in coding/paying for such feature and/or, because no-one has
the talent and will to work as an organizer between the interest groups.
i.e. Collect the money from interested and find a skilled bounty coder.
Depending on strategy the task may contain financial risk and/or be
profitable to the organizing entity.

We need to ask brands like Brother, AMD, nvidia to cooperate and show
them that Linux isn't a rare system, it's the future and the future is
 there!

I guess this is what Canonical is working on right now, for the sake of
Ubuntu.

 1. What is Linux? Majority of people will don't even know that Microsoft
is a software and that something else exist.

Linux is a kernel originally written by Linus Torvalds. Microsoft is a
company. When it comes to Ubuntu, creating an abstract image of values
and feelings in people, is more important than explaining any technical
details. Linux is also a word packed with many positive and negative
feelings and I'm not sure, if using it when advocating Ubuntu is a good
idea at all. Iirc it is currently used because it is well known. Maybe
one day Ubuntu will be a well known brand and using word Linux to gain
attention stops being necessary.

Big Linux advantages ( like security and absence of viruses ) can be
very interesting for people once they know it!

I don't think people are usually that interested in security. At least
not as long as lack of it doesn't disturb their daily activities.

Another important point is to make Linux Ubuntu informations
webpages, online groups, etc. very available over Internet.

They are not?

I give technical support to people at home. When I see a situation where
Linux Ubuntu could be interesting for my customers, I take the time to
show them the OS, give them informations and documentations as they can
make very clear choices about their computers and know what they do.
This makes people very happy to have Linux Ubuntu when they take this
decision and they generally don't want to use Microsoft anymore.

I've done this too, but then they all call me when they get some
trouble, because I'm the only Ubuntu skilled person they know.
I'm wondering, if some sort of peer guidance program would help
to solve the lack of free time this causes to me and people alike.
Of course the problem is not that big. Just a bit annoying. More
importantly it limits the amount of people I can recommend Ubuntu to.

I will continue to show Linux Ubuntu to my customers and give support
 and documentation for them

Thanks for your support to Ubuntu. I wish you luck and hope you don't
get too many support phone calls per day. :-)

[Bug 100114] Re: snd-hda-intel: distorted sound after resume, until the module is reloaded

2007-07-11 Thread wvengen
I don't think the line
pos -= pos % runtime-min_align;
updates the position buffer each time. You can see in posbuf-trace-01.txt that
runtime-min_align=1, so pos remains the same. I can find no place where posbuf
is updated, so I think the hardware does that. Before suspend, hardware and
software agree about their buffers, after suspend they don't, which may be a
result of your ***...*** marking in comment 12. But I still wonder why that
would have any impact, since the stream is reset, so the hardware should be
ready to accept new settings.

To verify this, I printed the lpib position (value of SD_LPIB register
for the stream) in azx_pcm_pointer(), in addition to azx_dev-posbuf
(see attachment). One can see that the lpib values are equal before and
after suspend, while the computed posbuf is wrong. This probabely means
that the hardware and software have a different idea about the dma
buffer.

[Bug 69438] Re: Bashism in /etc/cron.daily/apticron

apticron's purpose is to be run by cron every so often, and check the

It completely fails to run in edgy and feisty, because it uses dash-
incompatible bashisms, and edgy and feisty use dash.

Surely completely failing to run is at least equivalent to a crash?

rendering.

However, when using beryl, the X server freezes after some random
interval (always within 2-3 minutes). The mouse is usually still
movable, but the keyboard is unresponsive, and X will not terminate when
told to when I ssh in from another machine. The only way to recover is
to reboot from the external machine.

Occasionally the X server appears to crash and restart, after which the
keyboard is again responsive, but X is still consuming the entire CPU
and the system is extremely sluggish until I reboot.

After trying many different options, I eventually found that by changing
colour depth down to 16 bits resolves the problem. I have been using
beryl for several hours now with no further issues.

Regards,
Joe.

[Bug 112216] Re: Major problems with USB-scanners in Feisty Fawn

2007-07-11 Thread kairuri
I have used Vuescan very successfully with older kubuntu releases and
now with Feisty Fawn (7.04).

It works flawlessly with my Nikon coolscan ls-5000 (I scanned 1016
slides last week) and also with my Epson V700 - no problems.

I suggest you check your permissions on the /dev/bus/usb devices, you need rw
permissions for yourself
# ls -l /dev/bus/usb/002/037
crw-rw-r-- 1 root scanner 189, 164 2007-07-11 20:29 /dev/bus/usb/002/037

I have put myself in group scanner and check udev, I think the critical lines
are:
in /etc/udev/rules.d/40-permissions.rules

# USB devices (usbfs replacement)
SUBSYSTEM==usb_device,MODE=0664

and
in /etc/udev/rules.d/45-libsane.rules

# Nikon Super Coolscan LS-5000 ED
SYSFS{idVendor}==04b0, SYSFS{idProduct}==4002, MODE=664, GROUP=scanner

Try using your scanner as root, if it works, permissions are your
problem. There is plenty of advice on the vuescan web page, and in the
sane docs, and also for udev permissions in ubuntu forums.

[Bug 125207] [apport] gnome-screensaver crashed with SIGSEGV

2007-07-11 Thread jhellen
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-screensaver

I fired up my computer and clicked the update-manager because there were
some updates available. Then it told me that it would be better to do a
smart-upgrade even if I had Feisty already with the latest updates. Then
some update couldn't be fetched and it started to report crashed from

[Bug 125052] Re: document side effects of ubuntu udev setup

2007-07-11 Thread Andreas Jellinghaus
then maybe udev processes several events serialized?

what I'm seeing is one event with DEVICE=/proc/bus/usb/NNN/NNN and no matter
how long I sleep / delay / retry to find the file, it always shows up after the
script terminates. if the script internally forks into the background the
device file is there a few ms later.this is a huge problem that costs me hours
to debug and it might eat
other people as well. so please at least document the problem. an no. I'm not
using PROGRAM but RUN+=, thanks for asking. please fix the status to valid

[Bug 110636] Re: hdparm - cannot set dma on IDE hard drive that works via pata

2007-07-11 Thread Ning
Thats disappointing as many people I know use ubuntu on older hardware
for media servers and currently have over 1TB of PATA disk attached to
mine (Lossless audio streaming and photography). While I dont use mine
for DVD playback, the performance hit for PATA disk is too severe and
have reverted back to Edgy (6.10) until this issue is fixed as I cant be
bothered manually maintaining a custom kernel. I must say I am a little
surprised at the lack of urgancy being shown given the number of non-
sata laptops ubuntu is used on. In my case the performance of my PATA
drives on my AMD 1.8 system dropped from 60+MB/sec to barely 5MB/sec and
is very obvious when you routinely move large volumes of data around
over GigE. Now I am back on Edgy, all is good performance wise and can
sustain 30MB/sec using samba again:

Linux jupiter2.home.net 2.6.17-10-server #2 SMP Tue Dec 5 22:29:32 UTC 2006

/dev/hda:
 Timing cached reads: 1220 MB in 2.00 seconds = 608.88 MB/sec
 Timing buffered disk reads: 182 MB in 3.03 seconds = 60.15 MB/sec

Feisty (same disk)
=
/dev/hda:

[Bug 110251] Re: Different UUID between udev and fstab

2007-07-11 Thread Stefan Güls
Hmmm simply changing the status to invalid just doesn't solve the
issue.

I outlined above how to reproduce this bug. Clone a partiton, give it a new
label and UUID, and blkid yields nonsense.
This did not go away.

Ubuntu has moved to UUID-based mounting (which is a controversial issue in
itself) , so the user tools to write an ubuntu-compliant fstab should work
reliably.
So even if a partition had a filesystem previously, there needs to be correct
filesystem information given back to the user, may it be a udev- or a blkid-bug.

[Bug 125211] sbackup exits silently when it meets a nonexistent dir

2007-07-11 Thread Francesco Potortì
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: sbackup

Using simple-backup-config, I added a nonexistent directory in the Include tab.
sbackupd started and exited without signaling any error, but the backup
directory it created was empty.
Upon recognising the error, I removed the nonexistent directory and sbackupd
now works.

sbackupd should signal an error when encountering a nonexistent
directory, and should continue its work without exiting.

[Bug 125213] Saving dkpg-old files in /etc/modprobe.d doesn't make sense

2007-07-11 Thread Heike C. Zimmerer
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: apt-utils

If a file in /etc/modprobe.d has been modified by the user, he/she will be
asked if it should be replaced and, depending on the answer, content will
be saved in a dpkg-old file in the same directory.

This doesn't make sense there since both the new file and the saved content
will get used; renaming to filename.dpkg-old doesn't deactivate anything
since all
files there are considered valid.

Happened to me with alsa-base; will probably apply to other packages too, so
I'm filing a general bug against apt-utils for now (not sure, however).

[Bug 112803] Re: MASTER [Feisty] cupsd leaking file descriptors (was: Multiple jobs are not printed)

2007-07-11 Thread Till Kamppeter
We need a test with a CUPS version which does not have the numerous
patches as the Ubuntu version has.

Can you try the following:

Download

http://www.openprinting.org/download/printdriver/RPMS/i486/cups-1.2.11-1lsb3.1.i486.rpm

or

http://www.openprinting.org/download/printdriver/RPMS/x86_64/cups-1.2.11-1lsb3.1.x86_64.rpm

depending on whether you are using the 32-bit or 64-bit PC platform.

Convert the package to the Debian format:

sudo apt-get install alien
sudo alien --scripts cups-*.rpm

Install this package:

sudo dpkg -i cups_*.deb

Transfer your print queues to the new CUPS:

sudo cp /etc/cups/printers.conf /etc/opt/cups/
sudo cp /etc/cups/ppd/*.ppd /etc/opt/cups/ppd/

Stop the system's CUPS

/etc/init.d/cupsys stop

and start the new CUPS

/etc/init.d/cups start

(NOTE: only cups not cupsys here).

Try to print and observe whether the memory leak appears again.

[Bug 125217] beryl freezes when 24bit depth used

2007-07-11 Thread Joe Thomas-Kerr
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-video-ati

There are several bugs reported that seem similar to the issues that I
have, but they all appear somewhat different.

I use an X300, with dual head (merged fb mode) and AIGLX. Everything
works fine under KWin (including glxgears) and glxinfo reports direct
rendering.

However, when using beryl, the X server freezes after some random
interval (always within 2-3 minutes). The mouse is usually still
movable, but the keyboard is unresponsive, and X will not terminate when
told to when I ssh in from another machine. ps reports that X is
consuming 100% CPU. The only way to recover is to reboot from the
external machine.

Occasionally the X server appears to crash and restart, after which the
keyboard is again responsive, but X is still consuming the entire CPU
and the system is extremely sluggish until I reboot.

After trying many different options, I eventually found that by changing
colour depth down to 16 bits resolves the problem. After making this
change I have no further issues.

Regards,
Joe.

[Bug 100114] Re: snd-hda-intel: distorted sound after resume, until the module is reloaded

2007-07-11 Thread TJ
Yes, I agree. I found some time yesterday to build the alsa-core and
snd-hda modules myself and have been watching the updating of the
hw_ptr_interrupt. I've attached the log. Also, the line

pos -= pos % runtime-min_align;

is, if you read it carefully, not intended to update pos but simply to
ensure pos is aligned on the correct byte/word/dword boundary. That is
why in normal circumstances it doesn't change at that point.

I was comparing the resume operations to initial setup to see if I could
spot any hardware actions (such as writel()) that aren't done during
resume. So far, I've not found anything.

I also checked where azx_dev-posbuf is set, and it is only in one place
and the way the code reads azx_dev-posbuf should always point to the
base address so at the moment I've confused myself as to why pos
returned from azx_pcm_pointer() advances.

If the DMA harware registers were responsible for updating it the
declaration of the structure should be different, or we should find an
azx_dev-posbuf = azx_readl(); type construct.

[Bug 112803] Re: MASTER [Feisty] cupsd leaking file descriptors (was: Multiple jobs are not printed)

2007-07-11 Thread Till Kamppeter
See Mike's comment and my last comment in

http://www.cups.org/str.php?L2438

I have looked into the patches of the Ubuntu CUPS package and the
relevant patch (8 KB) is attached. The patch separates the verification
of the credentials into an external program which runs SUID root (as
CUPS runs as user in Ubuntu). Username and password are sent via a pipe
to the standard input of the external program (newly introduced function
cupsdCallPamAuthHelper()). It seems that this pipe is not correctly
closed.

The patch is one of Martin Pitt's non-root mode patches, therefore
assigning to Martin Pitt.

[Bug 125220] Question symbols (????) in filenames on CD

2007-07-11 Thread Андрей Калинин
Public bug reported:

In Ubuntu 7.04 non latin (cyryllic) symbols in filenames seems like a ??
(questions) on CDs, burned in windows programs (like Nero).
To fix this problem, need:
1) add parameter iocharset=utf8 in CD-ROM mount options in fstab
2) find in /usr/share/hal/fdi/policy/10osvendor/20-storage-methods.fdi string
append key=volume.mount.valid_options type=strlistiocharset=/append
and replace it
append key=volume.mount.valid_options type=strlistiocharset=utf8/append

P.S. In 7.10 this bug still presents.
