[Bug 83243] Re: keyboard problem after resume from hibernation
I have a 6400 with an ATI X1300 video card, and am using the fglrx drivers. This appeared for me with a semi-stock /etc/default/acpi- support. I had already predefined: MODULES_WHITELIST=fglrx ipw3945 Oddly, by also appending: POST_VIDEO=false My keyboard started working without fail from manually calling acpi's shutdown script. [Bug 124473] Re: Installing libghc6-gtk-dev takes forever (really doesn't complete)
When I installed it, a while ago, I noticed the same thing. I thought my computer had frozen. But after a long period it did complete and it works. It definitely did not take 45 min, though. I'd say that for about 5 minutes I couldn't even move the mouse cursor. This happened both on my laptop and on my desktop, both core 2 duo machines. Re: [Bug 1] Re: Microsoft has a majority market share
Linux is fragmented. That is why you don't consider Linux an operating system, and that is also why you use Ubuntu in first place. Ubuntu is not fragmented in that way. I see no reason why you should expect Ubuntu to be compatible with some other operating system, say Fedora. It happens to be far more compatible with Fedora than Windows ever was, but that is a good feature and not an issue. I think that Ubuntu should invite the OpenSource world to work in team and not in all separate projects, each point of view is good, we just need to find a way to fusion all ideas. Pouring all administrative tasks to one entity will probably just crush it, not make it stronger. Are there some specific synergy benefits you are looking for. Never the less, Ubuntu is already allowing anyone to join. tons of wasted work. Duplicating some functionality is not necessarily waste. It is useful to compete. Multiple copies of certain functionality also allows you to fall back to another one when the implementation you normally use fails. For an exemple, KDE and Gnome have too great way to abord the Desktop environment, why these teams don't work together to give to user more choice in a all-in-one Desktop solution. They are. See http://freedesktop.org/ Fax functionnalities The (and any other missing) feature is missing because no-one is interested in coding/paying for such feature and/or, because no-one has the talent and will to work as an organizer between the interest groups. i.e. Collect the money from interested and find a skilled bounty coder. Depending on strategy the task may contain financial risk and/or be profitable to the organizing entity. We need to ask brands like Brother, AMD, nvidia to cooperate and show them that Linux isn't a rare system, it's the future and the future is there! I guess this is what Canonical is working on right now, for the sake of Ubuntu. 1. What is Linux? Majority of people will don't even know that Microsoft is a software and that something else exist. Linux is a kernel originally written by Linus Torvalds. Microsoft is a company. When it comes to Ubuntu, creating an abstract image of values and feelings in people, is more important than explaining any technical details. Linux is also a word packed with many positive and negative feelings and I'm not sure, if using it when advocating Ubuntu is a good idea at all. Iirc it is currently used because it is well known. Maybe one day Ubuntu will be a well known brand and using word Linux to gain attention stops being necessary. Big Linux advantages ( like security and absence of viruses ) can be very interesting for people once they know it! I don't think people are usually that interested in security. At least not as long as lack of it doesn't disturb their daily activities. Another important point is to make Linux Ubuntu informations webpages, online groups, etc. very available over Internet. They are not? I give technical support to people at home. When I see a situation where Linux Ubuntu could be interesting for my customers, I take the time to show them the OS, give them informations and documentations as they can make very clear choices about their computers and know what they do. This makes people very happy to have Linux Ubuntu when they take this decision and they generally don't want to use Microsoft anymore. I've done this too, but then they all call me when they get some trouble, because I'm the only Ubuntu skilled person they know. I'm wondering, if some sort of peer guidance program would help to solve the lack of free time this causes to me and people alike. Of course the problem is not that big. Just a bit annoying. More importantly it limits the amount of people I can recommend Ubuntu to. I will continue to show Linux Ubuntu to my customers and give support and documentation for them Thanks for your support to Ubuntu. I wish you luck and hope you don't get too many support phone calls per day. :-) --Toni -- Microsoft has a majority market share https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is the bug contact for Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 100114] Re: snd-hda-intel: distorted sound after resume, until the module is reloaded
I don't think the line pos -= pos % runtime-min_align; updates the position buffer each time. You can see in posbuf-trace-01.txt that runtime-min_align=1, so pos remains the same. I can find no place where posbuf is updated, so I think the hardware does that. Before suspend, hardware and software agree about their buffers, after suspend they don't, which may be a result of your ***...*** marking in comment 12. But I still wonder why that would have any impact, since the stream is reset, so the hardware should be ready to accept new settings. To verify this, I printed the lpib position (value of SD_LPIB register for the stream) in azx_pcm_pointer(), in addition to azx_dev-posbuf (see attachment). One can see that the lpib values are equal before and after suspend, while the computed posbuf is wrong. This probabely means that the hardware and software have a different idea about the dma buffer. ** Attachment added: posbuf-trace-02.txt http://launchpadlibrarian.net/8410140/posbuf-trace-02.txt -- snd-hda-intel: distorted sound after resume, until the module is reloaded https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/100114 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is the bug contact for Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 85557] Re: AIXGL ATI Mobility Radeon X700 freezes with glxgears, glxinfo reports no rendering, radeon driver used
This may or may not be a different bug. I use an X300, with dual head (merged fb mode) and AIGLX. Everything works fine under KWin, including glxgears and glxinfo reports direct rendering. However, when using beryl, the X server freezes after some random interval (always within 2-3 minutes). The mouse is usually still movable, but the keyboard is unresponsive, and X will not terminate when told to when I ssh in from another machine. The only way to recover is to reboot from the external machine. Occasionally the X server appears to crash and restart, after which the keyboard is again responsive, but X is still consuming the entire CPU and the system is extremely sluggish until I reboot. After trying many different options, I eventually found that by changing colour depth down to 16 bits resolves the problem. I have been using beryl for several hours now with no further issues. [Bug 112216] Re: Major problems with USB-scanners in Feisty Fawn
I have used Vuescan very successfully with older kubuntu releases and now with Feisty Fawn (7.04). It works flawlessly with my Nikon coolscan ls-5000 (I scanned 1016 slides last week) and also with my Epson V700 - no problems. [Bug 110636] Re: hdparm - cannot set dma on IDE hard drive that works via pata
Thats disappointing as many people I know use ubuntu on older hardware for media servers and currently have over 1TB of PATA disk attached to mine (Lossless audio streaming and photography). While I dont use mine for DVD playback, the performance hit for PATA disk is too severe and have reverted back to Edgy (6.10) until this issue is fixed as I cant be bothered manually maintaining a custom kernel. I must say I am a little surprised at the lack of urgancy being shown given the number of non- sata laptops ubuntu is used on. In my case the performance of my PATA drives on my AMD 1.8 system dropped from 60+MB/sec to barely 5MB/sec and is very obvious when you routinely move large volumes of data around over GigE. Now I am back on Edgy, all is good performance wise and can sustain 30MB/sec using samba again: Linux jupiter2.home.net 2.6.17-10-server #2 SMP Tue Dec 5 22:29:32 UTC 2006 i686 GNU/Linux [EMAIL PROTECTED]:~# hdparm -tT /dev/hda Edgy /dev/hda: Timing cached reads: 1220 MB in 2.00 seconds = 608.88 MB/sec Timing buffered disk reads: 182 MB in 3.03 seconds = 60.15 MB/sec Feisty (same disk) = /dev/hda: Timing cached reads: 596 MB in 2.00 seconds = 297.85 MB/sec Timing buffered disk reads: 16 MB in 3.15 seconds = 5.09 MB/sec -- hdparm - cannot set dma on IDE hard drive that works via pata https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/110636 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is the bug contact for Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 110251] Re: Different UUID between udev and fstab
Hmmm simply changing the status to invalid just doesn't solve the issue. I outlined above how to reproduce this bug. Clone a partiton, give it a new label and UUID, and blkid yields nonsense. This did not go away. Ubuntu has moved to UUID-based mounting (which is a controversial issue in itself) , so the user tools to write an ubuntu-compliant fstab should work reliably. So even if a partition had a filesystem previously, there needs to be correct filesystem information given back to the user, may it be a udev- or a blkid-bug. -- Different UUID between udev and fstab https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/110251 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is the bug contact for Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 125217] beryl freezes when 24bit depth used
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-video-ati There are several bugs reported that seem similar to the issues that I have, but they all appear somewhat different. I use an X300, with dual head (merged fb mode) and AIGLX. Everything works fine under KWin (including glxgears) and glxinfo reports direct rendering. However, when using beryl, the X server freezes after some random interval (always within 2-3 minutes). The mouse is usually still movable, but the keyboard is unresponsive, and X will not terminate when told to when I ssh in from another machine. ps reports that X is consuming 100% CPU. After making this change I have no further issues. Regards, Joe. ** Affects: xserver-xorg-video-ati (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- beryl freezes when 24bit depth used https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/125217 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is the bug contact for Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 100114] Re: snd-hda-intel: distorted sound after resume, until the module is reloaded
Yes, I agree. I found some time yesterday to build the alsa-core and snd-hda modules myself and have been watching the updating of the hw_ptr_interrupt. I've attached the log. Also, the line pos -= pos % runtime-min_align; is, if you read it carefully, not intended to update pos but simply to ensure pos is aligned on the correct byte/word/dword boundary. That is why in normal circumstances it doesn't change at that point. I was comparing the resume operations to initial setup to see if I could spot any hardware actions (such as writel()) that aren't done during resume. So far, I've not found anything. I also checked where azx_dev-posbuf is set, and it is only in one place and the way the code reads azx_dev-posbuf should always point to the base address so at the moment I've confused myself as to why pos returned from azx_pcm_pointer() advances. If the DMA harware registers were responsible for updating it the declaration of the structure should be different, or we should find an azx_dev-posbuf = azx_readl(); type construct. ** Attachment added: pre/post resume pos, hw_ptr, hw_ptr_interrupt http://launchpadlibrarian.net/8410421/pcm-lib.txt -- snd-hda-intel: distorted sound after resume, until the module is reloaded https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/100114 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is the bug contact for Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 112803] Re: MASTER [Feisty] cupsd leaking file descriptors (was: Multiple jobs are not printed)
See Mike's comment and my last comment in http://www.cups.org/str.php?L2438 I have looked into the patches of the Ubuntu CUPS package and the relevant patch (8 KB) is attached. The patch separates the verification of the credentials into an external program which runs SUID root (as CUPS runs as user in Ubuntu). Username and password are sent via a pipe to the standard input of the external program (newly introduced function cupsdCallPamAuthHelper()). It seems that this pipe is not correctly closed. The patch is one of Martin Pitt's non-root mode patches, therefore assigning to Martin Pitt. ** Changed in: cupsys (Ubuntu) Importance: Medium = High Assignee: (unassigned) = Martin Pitt ** Attachment added: Patch to move authentication into external SUID root program http://launchpadlibrarian.net/8410429/10_external_pam_helper.dpatch -- MASTER [Feisty] cupsd leaking file descriptors (was: Multiple jobs are not printed) https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/112803 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is the bug contact for Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
