[Bug 131865] Re: package flashplugin-nonfree 9.0.48.0.0ubuntu5 failed to install/upgrade: subprocess post-installation script returned error exit status 2

2007-08-12 Thread BronsCon
I don't know what happened in the last 24 minutes but everything works
now. Thank you to the devs who worked on this!

...

...

Except that, even after a reboot... the plugin doesn't seem to work.

But at least it installs :)

[Bug 117950] Re: Grey box and error starting the GNOME Settings Daemon on login.

2007-08-12 Thread Thor H. Johansen
The problem has not been fixed! Don't close it! I'm getting the same
problem with Gutsy T3, which I installed by dist-upgrade from Feisty.
The problem surfaces rather randomly. Sometimes logging in again fixes
it. Just now, I had to reboot because it simply wouldn't work. Running
gnome-settings-daemon directly gives me error messages about being
unable to connect to the DBus. There is a session dbus running so I
don't get it...

[Bug 131925] [needs-packaging] Metasploit Framework 2.7

2007-08-12 Thread Justin M. Wray
Public bug reported:

Package: Metasploit Framework 2.7
Link: http://metasploit.com

License: Metasploit Framework License

Description: The Metasploit Framework is a development platform for creating
security tools and exploits. The framework is used by network security
professionals to perform penetration tests, system administrators to verify
patch installations, product vendors to perform regression testing, and
security researchers world-wide. The framework is written in the Perl
programming language and includes components written in C and assembler.
The Metasploit Framework consists of tools, libraries, modules, and user
interfaces. The basic function of the framework is a module launcher, allowing
the user to configure an exploit module and launch it at a target system. If

[Bug 131926] interface device not created when plugging in some prism2.5 PCMCIA cards

2007-08-12 Thread Michael R. Head
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: linux-source-2.6.22

I have two prism2-based PCMCIA cards here that both have worked up
through feisty (with the orinoco_cs driver). I've now tested the two
cards with gutsy (on my T30 laptop which has gutsy installed and my
wife's T22 laptop with the gutsy Tribe 4 Live CD). I'm finding that the
cards' plug events are detected, but the network devices are not
created.

In other words, I plug in either of the cards and get neither a wlan?
nor an eth? device. This obviously prevents the card from working.

I do have another prism2-based PCMCIA card which _did_ work with gutsy,
but these ones are not. I have retested with feisty, and both cards to
work.

Here's what happens in syslog when I insert and eject the card:
Aug 12 02:42:18 localhost kernel: [104563.852000] pcmcia: registering new
device pcmcia0.0
Aug 12 02:42:19 localhost NetworkManager: debug [1186900939.266280]
nm_hal_device_added(): New device added (hal udi is
'/org/freedesktop/Hal/devices/pcmcia__1__1').
Aug 12 02:42:49 localhost NetworkManager: debug [1186900969.530997]
nm_hal_device_removed(): Device removed (hal udi is
'/org/freedesktop/Hal/devices/pcmcia__1__1').
Aug 12 02:42:49 localhost kernel: [104595.832000] pccard: card ejected from
slot 0

The hostap_cs driver does not appear to be loaded when these cards are
plugged in, either.

I have an atheros-based card which _does_ work fine on both laptops.

[Bug 131799] Re: [Gutsy Tribe 4] Dell Inspiron E1505 Can't Install/Load Live CD with ATI Mobility Radeon X1300 - xorg Error

2007-08-12 Thread apache2
This has been happening for a long time.

Do this:
once you get booted up: ctrl+alt+F2 to switch to TTY2

sudo pkill gdm (this will usually take you away from TTY2, so ctrl+alt+F2 again)
sudo pkill xorg
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install xorg-driver-fglrx

once that is done:
sudo aticonfig --initial --overlay-type=Xv

now
sudo gdm

and you will have a working xorg (note, after you install, when you boot
your computer again, you will have to do the same exact thing with your
installed setup)

Let me know if you get this to work.

right functions and any new functions will need to be inserted etc.). You can
see a history of the very latest ata_piix module from upstream by looking at
http://git.kernel.org/?p=linux/kernel/git/torvalds/linux-2.6.git;a=history;f=drivers/ata/ata_piix.c;h=a78832ea81fa0f5cc9460cca362f498307820cb1;hb=HEAD
. I would also expect the .20 driver to have support for newer cards and
perhaps new features too.

The fastest way to get a fix is to narrow down what change broke your
card. The traditional way of doing this is to take a working driver and
a broken driver then do bisection until you find the change that broke
things. This is time consuming but ultimately tends to have good results
if you can narrow it down to one patch (these days it has become easier
because the kernel source code is managed with the version control
software git). Doing this is beyond the scope of this comment though.

The other thing you can do if you are willing to test vanilla upstream
kernels is to see whether the latest vanilla kernel has the issue. If it
does you can then say so in the upstream kernel bugzilla (
http://bugzilla.kernel.org/ ).

I have been trying to get the hard to use hostap_cs in feisty, but I get

[Bug 131142] Re: pidgin doesn't show away messages above 213 characters

2007-08-12 Thread George Schneeloch
I asked a friend to check my away message and he was able to read it
all. Also, he set a long away message for himself, and I wasn't able to
read that. So I guess that the problem is with my client receiving
messages, not sending them out. Basically, the icon changes to show that
he's idle and away, but the away message doesn't change from what it
previously was, if there was something. I used a packet sniffer
(Wireshark) and was able to read the text from long away messages there
even though it didn't show up in the client itself.

I tried '/whois' and it said This command doesn't work on this
protocol. My protocol is AOL instant messenger in case I forgot to
mention it, and the version of Pidgin is 2.1.0 from the Gutsy
repository.

I don't know if any of that would help reproduce that behavior... it's
not a big issue for me but I have time so I figured I'd try and help if
I could

[Bug 131936] Update Manager Cant Complete Install

2007-08-12 Thread 1205919
Public bug reported:

The taskbaar shows updates to be installed, when initialised the Update Manger
says:
Not all updates can be installed
Run a partial upgrade, to install as many update as possible.
This can be caused by:
* A previous upgrade which didnt complete
* Unofficial software packages not provided by Ubuntu
* Normal changes of a pre-release version of Ubuntu

I then choose Partial Upgrade, which fails to complete and says: Cant
install 'ubuntu-desktop' It was impossible to install a required
package. Please report this as a bug.

(Which I'm doing now)

It then states:

Could not calculate the upgrade
A unresolvable problem occurred while calculating the upgrade.

Please report this bug against the 'update-manager' package and include
the files in /var/log/dist-upgrade/ in the bugreport.

[Bug 131939] desktop effects update renders hard drive unoperable

2007-08-12 Thread Steve
Public bug reported:

when activating desktop effects a driver update is requested. upon
downloading new driver restart is requested - on restart ubuntu will
start loading w/startup screen and when entering os the screen goes
black w/message of signal out of range on my widescreen lcd monitor (my
brothers and father do not have this problem with ubuntu that they are
trying out on their non-widescreen lcd and crt monitors)- so at least we
know the refresh rate is not correct for my monitor - the real problem
comes when I reset the computer and try to load either windows xp or
ubuntu the hard drive is recognized by the bios but no longer can be
loaded and a never ending computer restart will begin as the hard drive
is no longer readable - this has happened with sata drives and ide
drives alike - the only way to recover my hard drive is to reset the
jumper on mb so that i can perform a dskchk and recover the hard drive
which can then load windows xp, but the ubuntu partition is
unrecoverable and only can be reformated to use again - if i try to
reload ubuntu after recovering hard drive and load all options giving
(ie. different versions, recover mode it will fail and state that the
partitioned drive had an error (can't remember exact words) and is
unloadable. my computer info is as follows: mb_foxconn C55A01 -
bios_American Megatrends Inc. Version :080014 - chipset_nVidia nForce
680i - memory_G Skill :F2-6400CL4-1GBHK - cpu_Intel xCore 2 Duo E6600 -
monitor_VX2025wm (needed resolution of 1680x1050 at 60Hz) - gpu_GeForce
7950 GT - main os_windows xp sp2. when using a seperate hard drive
other than my primary it only renders that hard drive unreadable or on a
virtual hard drive the same - in both these cases it is necessary to
reformate the drives to recover. but when using ubuntu on my primary
drive on a partitioned section it then becomes a major failure in that
all info on disk is at high risk as stated above. Is there a way to
get a monitor to work again without rebooting when this happens? cause
you now know that rebooting is not a savory optionwill this be fixed
in the next full version release in the fall?like many of us, Ubuntu
is an option that window users like me and my family can actually think
about switching to in the future - it seems to be the most promising
option for the future for those of us looking for an alternative, but
are not willing to learn code either - please respond as I would love to
get to know this os better - on my off seasons(sprinkler repairman) I
actually fix computers for people (strange prof. combo i know) and would
love nothing more than to help spread the use of a great alternative,
but need help on the main problem that I have run into. - thanks, steve

[Bug 131943] When using mplayer, vlc, kmplayer in 7.10 Gusty Gibbon with ATI card fglrx, xv overlay, the video appears Shaky

2007-08-12 Thread apache2
Public bug reported:

Not sure what causes this but:

Play any video using mplayer, vlc ( even others, kaffeine too but
kaffeine isn't loading lately see here:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/kaffeine/+bug/131935 )

and the video appears to be shaky... it won't stay still, litterally
as if there is an earthquake on the screen. When you go full screen it
appears to be in software mode? (video looks bad)

I'm using ATI X1600 mobile, fglrx driver, haven't had any problems in
Feisty.

2006-10-28), and it fixed the problem back then. Ie. before it 6.06 -
6.10 failed, with it it didn't. The patch from 2006-10-27 and the

Then, again, I would not expect

$ apt-get autoremove TAB TAB

entail. Thus I suggest that since

$ apt-get TAB TAB

is working correctly that the further requests should be rejected and
this bug closed.

[Bug 3] Re: Custom information for each translation team

2007-08-12 Thread Matthew Paul Thomas
** Summary changed:

- Custom links for each translation team.
+ Custom information for each translation team

** Description changed:

- Yes Jordi, we have identified this need also for the Israeli LoCo team,
- it would be great if we had that with i.e. specific documentatin for how
- to deal with the %s for displaying error messages inside a translated
- text with a special attention to RTL etc.
+ It would be nice if we could easily add *MUST READ* type of links to the
+ sidebar when one tries to translate something. For example, I want that
+ people that come in and want to start doing Catalan stuff are aware of
+ our conventions before they start doing any translation. Just a pair of
+ links to two Softcatalà resources would help a bit.
+
+ Right now, most of the new Catalan material that is being introduced in
+ Rosetta is quite poor because they totally ignore these conventions.

[Bug 131945] Bad recognition of DD by ata_piix

2007-08-12 Thread live_linux_secure
Public bug reported:

Hi everyone!
I have an ACER Aspire 9410. This computer has an ATA DD (i'm sure i've
disassembled it) but when i try to install Ubuntu (any version even gusty TRIBE
X) it is recognised as an SCSI sda... The install works fine and everything
works fine after the install but when i shut down the computer the DD makes a
very strange noise but not under windows. I've tried to force the use of the
ide_generic driver but in this case DMA is absent and impossible to activate
(hdparm -d1 /dev/hda) . I've search for an explanation and it appaers to be a
bug in ata_piix something like an error during hardware probe.

[Bug 131852] Re: Restricted Drivers Manager and NVidia

2007-08-12 Thread Sitsofe Wheeler
I'm not an official maintainer - I'm just another user. I tried to
answer your queries to the best of my knowledge. I believe Martin Pitt
is the r-m maintainer.

Paladine:
I no longer have machines that see the problem (they all use Ubuntu provided
drivers) so consequently (like you) I don't have the time to test this (since
you were the reporter I thought you would be able to do this but your follow up
explains more).

Ideally someone who does see this problem needs to step in and report
the issue and give reproducible steps. This might generate reproducible
steps that others can follow or they can provide debugging information
that helps someone who can't see the problem resolve the issue (this is
what I've had to do in the past but it can take time). This, of course,
is speculation on my part - jdong is the one with the @ubuntu.com
address not me. I do agree that r-m shouldn't stomp on manual binary
driver installs and I think I said that the issue needs investigation in
my original comment up at the top.

As for your last point, I think that might be better sent to one of the
mailing lists. I have spent time trying to debug manual installs and
deemed it too costly because there are too many things I feel that can
go wrong (for an example please see Bug #106434 ). However if
Ubuntu/Canonical is putting in the work to resolve and follow up on
cases like manual installs it will be their time and energy being used
and nothing to do with me. Until such a time Ubuntu/Canonical salary me
I may choose to skip bug reports or stop looking at bugs altogether (I
already have to work to earn money). I *do* see your point though (to
hear more post to a mailing list I read).

John:
I think I said that r-m installs which just go over the top of manual installs
should be investigated and gave steps on how to proceed. Note that I did not
close this bug report. I'm trying to triage the odd bug and do some cross
referencing (I shall stop if you feel this is counter productive). However the
more issues a bug contains the harder it is to understand what a bug refers to
- are you saying this bug is about r-m not touching previously installed binary
drivers or is it about the -new drivers not being installed on cards that can
handle them? Is this about people switching drivers and the hidden file issue?
