[Bug 122560] Re: no sound with 82801H (ICH8 Family) HD Audio Controller

2007-08-28 Thread Mike Richards
Here are Marius' steps slightly modified. This should make patching the
alsa source and installing the new modules fully automated -- just copy
and paste these commands into a terminal:

sudo apt-get install alsa-source
cd mkdir alsa-patched cd alsa-patched
tar -jxvf /usr/src/alsa-driver.tar.bz2
cd modules/alsa-driver/
wget -O alsa-kernel/pci/hda/patch_analog.c
http://launchpadlibrarian.net/9021234/patch_analog.c
./configure --with-cards=hda-intel make
sudo make install
sudo cp ./modules/snd-hda-intel.ko /lib/modules/$( uname -r
)/ubuntu/media/snd-hda-intel/
sudo depmod -a

(T61 users should also see the Gutsy/T61 page on Thinkwiki.org. Lots of good
info there.)

This bug can be closed, I hope it is usefull for others in the future.

[Bug 27472] Re: CD/DVD: hdc: packet command error: error=0x54 { AbortedCommand LastFailedSense=0x05 }

2007-08-28 Thread Ariel Faigon
Wow this is old. I just saw the closing bug notification.
Sorry for not following up on this.
My excuse: I switched to new hardware a long time ago and I haven't seen this
problem ever again
on my new hardware with later Ubuntu versions.

Just to close with a tiny bit more info:
DMA (hdparm /dev/hdc) has always been set here (used to show as using_dma = 1
(on))
so the problem must have been elsewhere. Unfortunately, I no longer use that
old hardware
to record the full output of 'hdparm /dev/hdc'
As Chuck mentioned it may well have been a defective hardware/firmware.

Thanks, ariel

[Bug 134668] Re: In gutsy gibbon tribe 5 there is no sound

2007-08-28 Thread technogran
Re- no sound in Gutsy Gibbon now have sound! I messed about with the
loudspeaker icon on the task bar, went into the mixer settings and turned on
FRONT (up to top) and now have sound! But I have not had to do this in previous
versions sound has just been there. So for me this bug is now resolved, but the
setting up of your sound now requires you to go into the mixer in Tribe 5
whereas before this was not required.
To resolve with Realtek high definition sound
Right click on the loudspeaker icon in the desktop taskbar. Go into the mixer
settings, adjust the front setting up to the top. Also put the loudspeaker
setting slidebar up to the top.
Exit. Check if the sound is now working.

[Bug 134706] Re: displayconfig-gtk: Test fails (scramled screen) even with default settings

2007-08-28 Thread Lil
Hi Bruce,

From what I am beginning to gather it's possible this has something to
do with the 'ati' driver which has been upgraded in Tribe 5 than
displayconfig-gtk from reading about other bugs on here.

As noted I made no changes to which driver Ubuntu has detected and
chosen and clicking Test left a scrambled screen which subsequently
locked up (see attachment for what happens) the laptop and required a
hard reset.

As I say that is what happens if I just boot the live CD on my Thinkpad
T40 (32MB Radeon 7500) and then open displayconfig-gtk and hit Test. I
have not installed Gutsy Tribe 5 and tried downgrading the driver as of
yet.

Also trying to configure a dual screen setup (extended or mirrored) and
just hitting OK rather than Test seems to crash the applet but that's
another matter for another bug I'll report once I have done some more
conclusive testing,

Vicky

[Bug 134716] Re: Mount with smbfs treats symlinks invalid

2007-08-28 Thread markba
OK, it's nice to have that symlink info, but this is not good if that
particular folder is unreachable, see example:

[EMAIL PROTECTED]:/media/lin01-public/music/all$ cd mp3
bash: cd: mp3: No such file or directory

Even if I turn 'unix extensions = no' on de server (and assuming the
above problem is solved), this should not happen in my opinion: all
folders should be reachable with or without the server setting. This is
important for backwards compatability.

[Bug 134613] Re: Gutsy Tribe 5, displayconfig-gtk and Thinkpad T40 - Crash

2007-08-28 Thread Lil

** Summary changed:

- Gutsy Gibbon Tribe 5, ThinkPad T40 and display-manager-gtk LCD corruption
+ Gutsy Tribe 5, displayconfig-gtk and Thinkpad T40 - Crash

** Description changed:

  Hello,
+
+ ***I have accidentally selected this as Baltix It's meant to be for
+ Ubuntu, I've tried changing it but it won't let me, oh well... I
+ tried***

I am presently running Feisty Fawn fine on my ThinkPad T40. I have set
up a custom way for Ubuntu to detect an external screen on boot, and
then ask to ask me whether I wish to mirror or extend onto the external
  screen.

As such it was with a great deal of interest to use the new Screen and
- Graphics Preferences tool to see how it fared.
+ Graphics Preferences tool (displayconfig-gtk) to see how it fared.

I have tried this using the detected graphics driver (ati (radeon)) in
the driver selection and not changed that. I have done this with the
external screen plugged in on boot and plugged in after boot.

When I chose my external display as a Generic 1024x768 LCD monitor
  having booted with it plugged in, and chose 1024x768 for the resolution;
and chose mirroring, and clicked Ok, I got a crash report, unfortunately
I could not send it because I did not have my wireless key to connect to
my wireless network. I will try and submit it as soon as I have a
  solution.

Trying to do the same having plugged the monitor in after booting, but
this time clicked Test. I got something on the external screen, but the
display was garbled badly on the laptop LCD, and after clicking cancel
on the OK to use it; the whole system froze and would only respond to a
  power off.

  The T40 has a 32MB Radeon 7500.

The external screen is in fact a 23 LCD JVC TV, but I have driven it
using 1024x768 at 60Hz on Ubuntu 7.04 and Windows 2000. In fact on
Ubuntu 7.04 I run it fine at its odd native resolution of 1360x768.

Any more details you need please ask but it would appear that this does
not work at all at present :(

I am booting and using this from the live CD if that is of use.

  Good work otherwise!

  Vicky

[Bug 135216] OSD fonts badly rendered in most zoom settings

2007-08-28 Thread Nico
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: mythtv

I have Gutsy with the latest updates at this date, on x86_64.

It is connected to an HDTV using DVI/HDMI and is running at 1920x1080.

I am currently using an NVIDIA card using the Ubuntu nvidia-glx. The
problem existed as well when using an Intel GPU in the same machine (2.0
and 2.1.1 drivers).

The display is set hard to 100dpi in xorg.

All the normal theme stuff (menus, EPG, etc...) is displaying great.

BUT -- All the OSD, when watching TV, has fonts rendered badly, with
weird aspect ratios and overlaps. This is for the OSD menu, the program
information, the volume setting, position, etc...

I tried many different OSD themes with the same results.

Fonts are rendered properly when 4:3 zoom is selected.

Any info/dumps/logs/confs can be provided quickly upon request.

Nico

[Bug 95660] Re: [needs-packaging] glsof

2007-08-28 Thread Caspar Clemens Mierau
Hi there,

indeed this is a bit confusing. There is a beta release but it's kept in
svn. So the way to build is:

svn co https://glsof.svn.sourceforge.net/svnroot/glsof
cd glsof
./autogen.sh
./configure
make
make install

This is of course not a state fitting to the needs for packaging, I will
drop the developer a line to clean up and build a beta tarball with a
release number.

[Bug 135201] background color of symlink in konsole terminal

2007-08-28 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
You have been subscribed to a public bug:

The background of a symlink in both terminal (Gnome) and konsole (KDE)
is black and foreground color is red. I would think the background color
should be transparent.

I'm not sure if it's dependent on the type of symlink, in the picture
shown one symlink (logs - /usr/local/apache/domlogs/lb) is red on
black; the other, not shown, ( www- public-html ) is teal on
transparent background.

To reproduce:

open folder using konsole or terminal with symlinks

[Bug 129352] Re: Meld fails to display file diff interface

2007-08-28 Thread harald42
Alexey, I assume, you did a short test only, right?

I'm assuming that, because since I changed my ~/.gconf/apps/meld meld generally
works for me, but sometimes (may be 5-10%) it fails again.
Generally, reopening the diff for a file (in my case always opened from a
directory comparision) randomly fails and works most of the time.

This leads to the conclusion, that the phenomen is influenced by some random
parameter, my be timing?
Looks a lot like a race condition for me.

[Bug 135219] WPA networks don't always work after suspend

2007-08-28 Thread Maya Shapira
Public bug reported:

After waking up from suspend-to-RAM, if the first available network is
WPA encrypted (even though I normally connect to it and the key is in
the keyring), NM doesn't successfully connect. Furthermore, the applet
does not recognize any wireless networks, and the Enable Wireless box
doesn't show up, nor do any wireless networks. I can only seem to fix
this by rebooting. Attached is a relevant snippet from

There are much lesser levelers/channels in Tribe 5.

To activate sound in Tribe 4 I had to use H-Phone one other (I do not
remember right now) channel to hear any sound. Heaphone Jack was working
right (no switched sound!) and the jack-sense was working too!

[Bug 49827] Re: Available resolutions incompletely set to 1024x768, 800x600, 640x480

2007-08-28 Thread Sander van Loon
I'm still affected by this problem as well. With Ubuntu 7.10 Tribe 5, a
daily build of 27 August to be exact, Ubuntu still doesn't choose the
right resolution. Installing the NVIDIA driver (nvidia-glx-new) for my
NVIDIA GeForce 7800 GT didn't change anything, and I had to manually
edit xorg.conf to be able to use the 1680 x 1050 resolution on my Dell
2007 WFP 20 inch widescreen monitor, Ubuntu defaults to 1280 x 1024.
I'll attach the full output of 'sudo lspci -vvnn', /etc/X11/xorg.conf
and /var/log/Xorg.0.log (of course from before I installed the NVIDIA
driver or edited xorg.conf). Don't know if it's any use, but I hope so.

[Bug 106891] Re: signal strength is fluctuating heavily

2007-08-28 Thread Philipp Kohlbecher
This may be purely coincidental, but the wired interface is now
configured as well, even though no cable has been plugged in there since
bootup. It has an IP address (in the 192.168.0.0/24 range, not in the
avahi 169.254.0.0/24 range) and is set as a default route (in addition
to a default route through the wireless interface). I don't think I have
seen this before, but I am not completely certain. (And, again, this may
be completely unrelated.)

[Bug 106891] Re: signal strength is fluctuating heavily

2007-08-28 Thread Philipp Kohlbecher
All of a sudden I am seeing this problem now. It wasn't there yesterday
and I haven't changed my configuration since then. The last update,
according to /var/log/dpkg.log, was mozilla-thunderbird three days ago.

I am sitting right next to the wireless router.

I am using feisty with Linux 2.6.20-16-generic (uname -r). My laptop is
a Samsung X20 XVM 1730 V with an Intel Corporation PRO/Wireless 2200BG
Network Connection (rev 05), according to lspci. It uses the ipw2200
driver. The WiFi network uses WPA2 encryption.

Please let me know how I can help fix this bug.

The bug changed in Tribe5. When use xrandr -o 1, the X stopped to
response, except the mouse pointer can still move. The system can be

[Bug 135224] [gutsy] Migration Assistant exits strangely

2007-08-28 Thread mr_matze
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: migration-assistant

Hello,

I am using Gutsy Gibbon Tribe 5. The server-installation went fine, all
worked. Then I tried the Desktop CD.

my hdd is divided in the following partititons:

/dev/sda1 fat32 old windows - nothing on it
/dev/sda2 ext3 new /
/dev/sda3 ext3 old and new /home
/dev/sda4 ext extended
/dev/sda5 fat32 personal files
/dev/sda6 ext3 feisty /also uses sda3 as /home and sda7 as swap
/dev/sda7 swapswap

The installation goes fine up to the migration assistant. It then says that it
could not unmount /mnt/migrationassistant und that i shall close down all
programs using this.
I then go to the console and unmount it manually ( there was the sda1 mounted)
and clicked continue. It mounts sda2 and sda3 and exits. Without any message to
me.

I also miss the decision in the installation to uncheck the migration
assistant, so that it doesn't do anything.

Do you need any other information, and if so, how do i collect them?

I'm sorry, I'm pretty new to alpha testing,

The annoying thing about this is, that the installation somehow crashed
my grub bootloader. I don't know why and how, but this is somehow off
the topic. So don't mind. I will fix that.

greetings from sunny germany
matze

[Bug 135225] [gusty tribe 5] nautilus sort's files only by name

2007-08-28 Thread mrsuicide
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: nautilus

Version: Gusty Gibbon Tribe 5, Nautilus 2.19.90

How to reproduce: Just try to change the file sorting sceme in a folder
with nautilus.

Further information:

Nautilus ignores the command when you tell it, it should sort files
anyother than by name.

Sometimes you can change the file sorting sceme one time, let's say you
want to sort by size. But after that it won't respond to commands
anymore. So you can't change the file sorting sceme a second time.

Greetings,
Jan Schiefer!

[Bug 134706] Re: displayconfig-gtk: Test fails (scrambled screen) even with default settings

2007-08-28 Thread Hugo Heden
Vicky, *thanks* for your additions and clarifications, we are indeed
seeing the same thing.

Bryce:

1) Scrambled: At first, the screen looks like on the photographs that
Vicky has attached, *except* that the Keep this configuration pop-up
is visible, and I can press Alt-c to select Cancel.

2) Then what happens is that the screen look *exactly* like on the
photographs that Vicky has attached, and everything hangs. (Ctrl-Alt-
Backspace doesn't help, Ctrl-Alt-F1 does nothing, power button does
nothing).

Vicky and Bryce:

I should have reported this as two separate items:

1) The technical issue with the scrambled screen. If I read you
correctly, Vicky, this issue is covered by other bugs(?), so yes, let's
just skip that issue here.

2) [displayconfig-gtk] [Wishlist] -- Workflow issue: displayconfig-gtk
should start with *current* settings. In order for people to more
easily find this discussion, perhaps I should open that as a separate
bug, and Bryce could close *this* bug (as invalid)?

[Bug 135228] GNOME session freezes to black screen, Failsafe GNOME session works fine

2007-08-28 Thread Sander van Loon
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-session

I installed Ubuntu 7.10 Tribe 4 and downloaded all the latest updates as
of yesterday, 27 August, so the gnome-session version is
2.19.90-0ubuntu2. I was about to shut down my PC, but before I did so I
opened System - Preferences - Sessions - Session Options and
enabled Automatically remember running applications when logging out
so that session saving was enabled.

Then I shut down. Ubuntu didn't shut down properly, the GNOME Panel and
applications disappeared, but the wallpaper on my desktop background
didn't and kept being displayed. I waited a while, but after a few
minutes I hit the reset button because Ubuntu had obviously frozen.
After starting up again, I logged in from GDM (without changing the
session, so by default I was logging in to the Last session). After
entering my username and password, GNOME didn't load. It crashed to a
black screen, with my mouse cursor still visible and responsive. I hit
Ctrl + Alt + Backspace to kill X and return to GDM, there I chose the
Failsafe GNOME session this time, and logged in succesfully. However,
if I try to log in to the GNOME session again, it still produces the
same crash.

the hoster of the site and explaining the case to them ... maybe point
them to the bug i marked this one a duplicate from.

Thanks and sorry for any confusion,

[Bug 135229] gusty - openoffice.org-gtk - icons are to close to the left when using a gtk style with left a left color bar

2007-08-28 Thread Jelle de Jong
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 135230 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/135230

Public bug reported:

gusty - openoffice.org-gtk - icons are to close to the left when using a
gtk style with left a left color bar

In xubuntu gusty with the new style sheet that contains a left black
colored line in all the gtk menu's the icons of openofice.org are to
close to this left menu line compared with to looks of all other native
gtk applications, I can recall also noticing this unwanted behavior of
openoffice 6 months ago. The behavior also happens when using the
openoffice.org-gtk-gnome package.
