[Bug 155947] Re: ldap config causes Ubuntu to hang at a reboot

2007-10-23 Thread tuharsky
I have reported the duplicate of this at #156562:

I have installed libnss-ldap and related packages in order to authenticate
against LDAP server.
During installation, I have been asked for server information, LDAP version etc.
However, this information has been placed NOWHERE in /etc. It seems that Ubuntu
simply drops the information! It dosent set up ANY needed configuration for
LDAP auth!
Strange, that there is /etc/ldap.conf both with /etc/ldap/ldap.conf (this one
is not efective, all rows commented)

Then I managed all the needed files manually: /etc/ldap/ldap.conf,
/etc/ldap/ldapserver, /etc/pam.d/login, /etc/pam.d/common-account,
/etc/nsswitch.conf and so on. I did it the way that has WORKED with
Feisty Fawn and Debian Etch before.

After reboot, system fails to boot. It stops on "Starting kernel log
daemon" forever.

When I set passwd, group and shadow parameters in nsswitch.conf back to
"compat", it starts normally, however when I set them to "compat ldap
files", fails to boot again.

[Bug 156564] CPU frequency isn't shown in Gnome (Ubuntu 7.10) on systems with powersave enabled processors

2007-10-23 Thread Robert Dzikowski
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-applets

I have laptop with Intel Core 2 Duo processor. This processor has two
speeds: powersave - processor works at 50% of its maximum frequency and
performance - processor works at 100% of its maximum frequency. After
installing Ubuntu 7.10 (Gutsy) I found out that Ubuntu starts in
"balanced" CPU mode - CPU works at 50% of its maximum frequency unless
more is needed, but nowhere this information is shown to the user.

[Bug 156561] Enigmail does not cache passphrase anymore

2007-10-23 Thread Matej Kovačič
Public bug reported:

I just upgraded to Gutsy from Feisty and I am using Thunderbird 2.0.0.6
(20071022) with Enigmail version 0.95.0 (20070830).

When I go to OpenPGP - Preferences and select "Basic" settings and enter
"Remember passphrase for" 80 minutes of idle time, this has no effect.

When I go to GPG encrypted message for a first time, I have to enter
passphrase. Then I select another - unencrypted - message and then the
first (encrypted) message again. I am asked to enter passphrase again.

It is quire nasty to enter passphrase EACH time sou select GPG encrypted
message, if you have a lot encrypted messages...

This happens after the syslog reports

and nothing goes futher.

There are already two different places to change these default compiz

[Bug 129910] Re: tty[1-6] are active but display nothing in Gutsy

2007-10-23 Thread gwi
I did a fresh install of Gutsy on my AMD/nVidia system. I can access tty1-6
now, but the font is huge. I am using the nvidia-glx-new restricted drivers,
which were installed via the Restricted Manager.
I will try to change the resolution to get a smaller font in the tty's, and see
if that causes the problem.
The fresh install did solve another problem: swat is working again (as it was
under Dapper and Edgy, but never under Feisty), and so is hddtemp (but that
also worked after the upgrade). So Gutsy has its good points ;-)

I've just run into this on gutsy.

I'm really just commenting to note that until the proposed fix gets to

[Bug 154438] Re: Mouse-over pop-up labels disappear on upgrading to Gutsy.

2007-10-23 Thread Ivo Vegter
Yes, I did restart after upgrading, but no change.

What I also did was install the Mozilla version of Firefox 2.0.0.8, and
the problem is now solved. It also didn't happen with the Ubuntu version
of Firefox under Feisty, using the exact same set of extensions. So it
appears to be unrelated to any extensions, and limited to Ubuntu Firefox
2.0.0.6 (or 2.0.0.x) under Gutsy. Hope this helps.

[Bug 156556] Gimp brushes leave garbage pixel trails

2007-10-23 Thread Eric Seppanen
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gimp

I just upgraded from Ubuntu 6.10 to 7.10, and now Gimp has a horrible
display artifact: every tool that uses a brush leaves bright green pixel
trails across the image. Though they go away when the window refreshes
(i.e. minimize and then restore the window), this makes Gimp essentially
unusable for me.

This is with gimp-2.4.0~rc3-1ubuntu7.

A screenshot of the problem is here:

[Bug 156550] Re: [gutsy] ati open source driver issues with external monitor

2007-10-23 Thread david_ri
I have EXACTLY the same issue on a Dell C640. I attached this snapshot
in another bug report. This is also a security issue because the
screensaver (shown) does not cover the whole screen, even when "locked,"
allowing access to files outside of the area that Ubuntu "thinks" is the
full-screen area - i.e., the area delineated by the top and bottom
panels in your photo, and by the screen saver in fullscreen preview mode
in this photo. Some people are reporting that there is a blank window in
movie players when playing videos. I also have that problem - the
picture doesn't "appear" unless I drag the window OUTSIDE of the panels
shown. If someone doesn't have an external monitor supporting a larger
resolution, they would not even have that option. This is a serious
problem and it occurred after upgrading from Feisty to Gutsy on my
laptop. Interestingly, it does the same thing with both a clean install
AND with running from the liveCD. I never had this screen geometry
problem with Feisty.

[Bug 150775] Re: [gutsy] Screen garbling on RC410 Radeon Xpress 200

2007-10-23 Thread Haran
Changing accel to EXA doesn't help - in fact, when changing, X randomly on
startup (1) acts identically to the previous setup, (2) hangs midway through
bringing up the desktop after logging in.
Two more points if they help:
(1) When logging in from the greeting screen, the screen flashes black, and the
cursor becomes the X cursor for a second before going back to an arrow cursor;
(2) The main problem is that everything is very slow - screen repaints take
forever, whiptail takes ~10 minutes to draw an opening splash screen on a
maximized console window in X.

No, I mean exactly the opposite : Ubuntu is using version 1.0.14 and you
have to compile 1.0.15, which works, at least here. But the wiki article
speaks of version 1.0.14, which is the reason of my quite unclear
previous assertion. Download and compile 1.0.15. And yes, unless they
bump the alsa version or someone patches 1.0.14 to work around the bug,
you'll have to recompile at least alsa driver for every kernel update...

I can reproduce this bug on an ATi card (Radeon Xpress 1100) using

/initramfs-tools/modules, and commenting out the relevant lines in
/etc/modprobe.d/blacklist-framebuffer. As a result of this the splash
image does not display correctly however (it appears to be at far too

[Bug 150129] Re: [Gutsy] ALSA lib pcm_dmix.c:864:(snd_pcm_dmix_open) unable to open slave

2007-10-23 Thread Jeremy Visser
But they're not in .deb format, are they?

I'm not sure what Ubuntu's policy for updates is — would this new
working ALSA stuff be able to be backported to Gutsy, because this is
such a widespread issue? Or will I have to package it up myself and put
it in a PPA for people to download?

[Bug 155675] Re: Can't switch to virtual console (Ctrl-Alt-F1) in Gutsy

2007-10-23 Thread Vikas BN
@Guillaume -- That doesn't help.

However, I figured out what had caused the issue.

When i add 'vga=791' to the kernel boot options, this happens.
If I remove this part, it works well. I think the virtual console
is not able to handle the resolution.

[Bug 156550] [gutsy] ati open source driver issues with external monitor

2007-10-23 Thread Vikas BN
Public bug reported:

HI,

I use a laptop Dell D610 with the AIT mobility M22 video card.
I normally use the laptop when docked to the docking station
which is connected to an external monitor (Dell 1905FP).

I installed Gutsy a couple of days back and since then, it's not
been able to switch to the resolution 1280x1024 (that the
  external monitor supports).

I installed fglrx driver and that works well. I didn't have this issue
with fiesty and ati open source drivers.

I'll attach a screenshot of how the screen looks on the external
monitor. Please revert if you need any more info.

[Bug 154405] Re: After upgrading to Gutsy, I get no sound and double clicking the audio control icon gives "No volume control GStreamer plugins and/or devices found". I have a Toshiba laptop and I fix

2007-10-23 Thread Dave
I am new to linux. I hope I am not overstepping my bounds by reporting
something here. I am a non-technical user who just likes Ubuntu. I
upgraded from 6.10 to Gusty and have the same problem/message on my
Toshiba satellite A135-S4427. I have tried many recommendations such as
upgrading to the newer alsa drivers, adding various options to the alsa-
base file, reinstalling the linux kernel 2.6.22-14 generic, recompiling
(I think that is the term) a new kernel 2.6.22-14 386, installing the
backport modules, using alsaconf among other things. I was able to get
sound by booting an earlier kernel from grub that remained on the list,
but then some of the other things don't work right. I can't turn off my
card in the BIOS because there is not an option to do that. The basic
problem seems to be that my IHC7 family hda intel card (however you say
it) is not recognized, and refuses to be. aplay gives the following:
device_list:204: no soundcard found... dmesg has a line that says:
[100.832000] HDA Intel: probe of :00:1b.0 failed with error -16.
When I do lsmod there are no snd modules loaded. This seems like a
major bug to me, but I have no idea where to go. Is there any chance of
this issue being resolved or should I go back to an earlier release?

icon gives "No volume control GStreamer plugins and/or devices found". I have a

[Bug 133575] Re: scp big file causing General Protection Failure

2007-10-23 Thread Quikee
rmaarsen: Thanks, it looks like this is the cause.

For stability reasons I hope this patch will be included or backported
into Ubuntu 2.6.22 kernel. I found that this problem has been fixed in
2.6.23 according to this in the release note:

commit 5f08e46b621a769e52a9545a23ab1d5fb2aec1d4
Author: Luca Tettamanti <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>
Date: Fri Sep 7 20:25:01 2007 -0400

atl1: disable broken 64-bit DMA

64-bit DMA causes data corruption with atl1. We don't know why, and Atheros
is working on it. For now, just use 32-bit DMA. This is a big hack that is
probably wrong, but it stops the bleeding.

Uh oh, bad news: I booted the LiveCD again and checked that access was
fast, then booted the installed Gutsy to get fdisk info for
reinstalling. And...the network is totally fine. Which would be great,
except I don't know what changed. So: slow network? Boot the LiveCD,
then reboot. Maybe it'll work. If not, try again.

[Bug 147253] Re: msttcorefonts failed to install

2007-10-23 Thread McGregor
I had the same problem with 7.10 msttcorefonts and sourceforge. Seems it
was a dns lookup problem in my Ubuntu system. After following these
instructions (for edit I used sudo gedit) I downloaded the fonts no
problems. : -

http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=574180
_
Edit /etc/dhcp3/dhclient.conf
Add this line at the end of the file:

prepend domain-name-servers xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx, xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx;

replace the xxx with your DNS's IP addresses. I have two of them.
After rebooting, this IP's are added to resolv.conf on reboot, and everything
works fine.

[Bug 156542] Fullscreen wine applications disapear from window list on workspace switch

2007-10-23 Thread Aigars Mahinovs
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: compiz

If compiz is enabled on a gutsy installation (upgraded from feisty) and
a wine application is run in fullscreen mode (such as WoW), then the
window of this application disappears from the window list when the
workspace is switched using the Ctrl+Alt+Right/Left keyboard shortcut.
The application is still running, according to top, but getting back to
it is impossible as it does not show up on the workspace that it was on
(or any other workspace) and does not show up in the global window list.

Could not reproduce on native OpenGL games as they apparently do not
allow switching out of them (either with Alt-Tab or Ctrl-Alt-
Right/Left).

Switching fullscreen workarounds and unredirect fulscreen windows
options in compiz advanced preferences has no effect.

Re: [Bug 150930] Re: Black screen, and bad usplash.conf

2007-10-23 Thread malaeum
Well it seems to me that the main issue of contention here is the
detected settings being incorrect for given hardware. I am wondering
how usplash defines things like vertical and horizontal refresh rates
and if they are modifiable. Perhaps something along the lines of X's
modelines?

I'm kinda of stabbing in the dark here but it seems that some people
have gotten it working at certain resolutions but it doesn't work at
others that it seemingly should for their hardware. IE more than few
have gotten this working at 800x600 yet I doubt that the 1024x768 that
it was originally configured to run at was beyond the bounds of their
displays capabilities.

[Bug 156540] High pitch whine on left audio channel with Asus K8N-VM

2007-10-23 Thread James King
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: linux-image-2.6.22-14-generic

Using 4ch or 6ch mode on Gutsy with the Asus K8N-VM motherboard onboard
audio (nvidia MCP-51 chipset) results in a high pitched whine on both
the front and rear left channel speakers. Right and center channels are
unaffected. The device is listed as AD198x Analog and is using the snd-
hda-intel driver. Googling around turned up similar issues with other
nforce boards, but all were solved by using one of the following lines
in /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base:

options snd-hda-intel index=0 model=3stack position_fix=0 single_cmd=0
options snd-hda-intel position_fix=1 model=3stack
options snd-hda-intel model=3stack
options snd-hda-intel model=auto

I have tried all 4 variations with a reboot in between, and still get
the high pitched whine. Using 2ch mode eliminates the problem, but
means that 5.1 sound doesn't work. I have tried muting and unmuting
various combinations of channels and altering levels, none of which has
any positive impact. Additionally, adjusting any level while sound is
being played results in the audio output abruptly dying (I was using the
test under System->Preferences->Sound). The only fix is to stop any
application using the device and adjust the main audio level on the
system tray applet, which seems to restore sound.

$ tail -2 /proc/asound/oss/sndstat
Mixers:
0: Analog Devices AD1986A

Will attach debugging outputs. This bug is similar to #89036 and
#90303.

2007-10-23 Thread Ted Carnahan
Confirm ~ppa3 solves this problem for me as well.

I have had similar problems with ipw3945 causing random crashes as
described above. I haven't had any problems since switching from the
NEWER 0.6.5-0ubuntu16 to the PPA repository's 0.6.5-0ubuntu16~ppa3,
which according to the changelogs has a different set of patches
applied. As far as my machine goes, moving those patches to a new
release is warranted. Thanks.

Gutsy has now been released for almost a week, but this bug remains unfixed.
Luckily, exporting AWT_TOOLKIT fixes the problem for me as well, but
nevertheless if a patch has been made, why not commit this upstream? Does this

Just curious, thanks :)

[Bug 107188] Re: [MASTER] [kde] Upgrade tool crashed with " Cannot allocate memory" (edgy -> feisty)

2007-10-23 Thread BigPick
I am pleased to report that using the above patch, my second sandbox
tower was finally able to upgrade using the dist-upgrade.py script
without error. I will run the test again on my other sandbox tower as
soon as I revert it back to a Feisty install. Right now, I need to go to
bed.

While this result bodes well, I still need you all to try out the patch
and report your results back here. Doing so will greatly aid in the
resolution of other errors that still may be lurking. If you need some
help applying the patch I posted instructions in the other bug report
linked above, just make sure you download the second patch revision
instead of the one used in the example. Once you have run the patch,
successful or not, please post the log files located in /var/log/dist-
upgrade/.

I am not a developer, I am just a lowly peon user who had his install
corrupted when the update-manager crashed. As such I need your
assistance in getting this patch tested and, if successful, pushed to
the higher-ups. Thank you for your help.

[Bug 149641] Re: logcheck fails when auth.log.1.gz missing

2007-10-23 Thread Ariel Faigon
Apologies, but I have to correct/improve myself on the previous comment.
I have a feeling I was running an older version of logcheck.

If I run logcheck from cron with full path (certainly the ubuntu
version) like this:

sudo -u logcheck /usr/sbin/logcheck -op
(given that I add /usr/bin/logcheck to /etc/sudoers with NOPASSWD)

or alernatively:
Add a setuid logcheck to /usr/sbin/logcheck:
   sudo chown logcheck /usr/sbin/logcheck
   chmod u+s /usr/sbin/logcheck

Then, the offset files get created/updated under:
/var/lib/logcheck/offset.var.log.

and the 'touch/chown' fix (step 2 above) is not necessary.

It is all hairy, but overall, the setuid checklog, setgid adm looks like the
cleanest solution.
What is required is for all of the 3 conditions to be true:

 - /usr/sbin/logcheck can read all its configs under /etc/logcheck/*/*
 - /usr/sbin/logtail can write offset files under /var/lib/logcheck/*
 - /usr/sbin/logtail can read files under /var/log (some of which are
user:group root:adm and not world readable)

Sorry.

[Bug 156536] BOINC World Community Grid stuck "Waiting for memory"

2007-10-23 Thread shanen (Shannon Jacobs)
Public bug reported:

This actually appeared some months ago. So far it has only affected one
of my machines, but the machine has two disk partitions configured for
Ubuntu. There are obviously no hardware differences between them, and
they even share the same swap partition.

Before the Gutsy 7.10 upgrade, the BOINC Manager in one of the Ubuntu
boots would frequently report that the process was stuck "Waiting for
memory" (Wfm). At first it was rare, though it seemed most likely to
occur at boot time. For example, it might run to 30% one day, then
continue to 75% the next day, but on the third day it would just stick
in the Wfm state. Later it became more common, and finally it seemed to
occur right after the initial computations. It would download a fresh
unit (after a Reset command), run for a few minutes, and then go
directly to Wfm. I tried everything I could think of to fix it,
including complete removals and reinstalls.

At this time, there was no problem in the other Ubuntu.

After the Gutsy 7:10 upgrade, both of them seem to be broken and
immediately transition to the Wfm state. (I'm going to try a few of the
other BOINC projects, though just for testing. WorldCommunityGrid is the
one that is officially sanctioned by my employer.)

[Bug 156537] Mines graphics annoying

2007-10-23 Thread aeroman
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-games

I am using KDE 7.10 with Crystal window decoration and Keramik style.
When I play mines the only differentiation between cleared space and
uncleared space are small dotted lines that are VERY difficult to see

colors, but for whatever reason with my settings they are the same.

It isn't a bug I guess, but it would improve game play.

[Bug 133765] Re: gutsy md module not present in ramdisk

2007-10-23 Thread plughead
dpkg-reconfigure mdadm did not work for me. It turns out that *somehow*
the UUID on my raid array changed and the mdadm.conf never got updated
(possibly when I grew the array with mdadm -grow?) and the change wasn't
obvious, because the first two segments were identical. I only noticed
it when I ran out of other options and compared them side by side...
Anyhow, once the UUID was updated in mdadm.conf and initrd.img was
regenerated, I was able to boot 2.6.22-14.

The only thing I can think is that the mdadm script in 2.6.20-16 must be
*much* more forgiving, because by all rights, that should have never
booted either.
