Here's the solution.

It works perfectly for me with zero ill effects. I based it off the

[Bug 145382] Re: [Gutsy] broken 70-persistent-net.rules

2007-12-15 Thread Uphaar Agrawalla
Bug 153727 has been marked duplicate of this bug, and this bug is marked
Invalid. The issue in 153727 is same as Nego's issue, which Steve
indicates is a separate issue. The bug is very much present in Gutsy
Final (with all updates). Why was 153727 marked as a duplicate of this
bug then?

Should I re-open this bug, or un-dupe 153727?

[Bug 159630] Re: Ubuntu install failure on Dell Inspiron 2600

2007-12-15 Thread LostIntheWoods
I have a Dell Inspiron 2600 which currently has XP Pro and Feisty
Kubuntu installed in a dual-boot configuration. Feisty Ubuntu also
worked in the same configuration, but I prefer KDE over Gnome.

I ordered the Gutsy Kubuntu disk from Canonical. They sent me the Gutsy
Ubuntu disk. I tried to run it as a live disk. The set-up seems to run
to completion but the screen turns a funny colour (like a wash) that
slowly changes colour. That sems to be the same issue as here. No
command is usable. The keyboard is dead. FYI, the graphics chipboard is
Intel 830. The processor is a 731/1000 MH Pentium 3. 512 MB RAM. Bios
A09. It should be taken into account that I had to downgrade the BIOS
from A011 to be able to install Linux at all--there has been a problem
exactly on the graphics for several years with the later versions of
BIOS from about Fedora Core 1 (if I remember correctly: I don't know
what the corresponding Ubuntu release would be).

Eventually the Gutsy Kubuntu disk came, same problem.

This doesn't seem to bode well for an upgrade from Feisty to Gutsy--and
even makes me nervous about updates from the Web to the current Feisty
configuration, especially if the problem is going to appear in a kernel
update. I see that with the complications in installing Gutsy on HP
machines, there is a problem there with graphics drivers and kernel
updates.

As for the present configuration of XP Pro and Feisty on the Dell
Inspiron 2600, this Linux configuration works, although not quite as
bug-free as I would have hoped. It's not quite as smooth in the user
interface department as XP.

I tried doing what Canonical suggests, running the live disk under XP to
see the XP-compatible products, but that caused things to freeze when
Melodeon tried to install. I had to can the installation.

So what gives with Gutsy? How do I run it on the Dell Inspiron 2600? I
noticed that there are some hardware issues on HP laptops with Gutsy.
Perhaps there is a similar problem here?

Thanks.

[Bug 174408] Re: [hardy] broken X session, can't login

2007-12-15 Thread Jean-Baptiste Lallement
Well it's a little bit weird.

After further investigation I've found that after the second login Xgl
is way too slow to start and gnome-session starts _before_ Xgl (in Xgl-
session Xgl is started in the background)

A workaround is to add a sleep 5 in /usr/share/xserver-xgl/Xgl-session
after the line $XGL_WRAPPER $XGL_DISPLAY $XGL_ACCEL_OPTS $XGL_OPTS

Now I've to find out why Xgl is so slow on second startup and next.

The other message in .xsession-error are just GTK warnings and doesn't
affect session startup.

[Bug 176494] Kweather reports network unavailable on Feisty Kubuntu

2007-12-15 Thread LostIntheWoods
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: kweather

After installing Feisty Kubuntu in a dual-boot configuration with
Windows XP Pro, and using later a dial-up line on a pcmcia modem card, I
installed Kweather. It seems to be there and I can set the location
with no problem, but whenever I try to check the weather it gives me a
message that the network reports that it is unavailable. I really don't
know what this means. I wonder if the applet only works with a LAN
connection.

I tried uninstalling completely and reinstalling--even trying to force a
second download--but nothing works.

+ Note: This bug is not related to OpenCards itself, but only to the

both (!) menus are visible. This means that extensions interact although there

[Bug 160283] Re: Xserver-xgl cause a crash on Gnome Session

2007-12-15 Thread Jean-Baptiste Lallement
I've found out that under some /yet unknown/ conditions Xgl is so slow
to start that the session starts before Xgl is ready.

See bug #174408 for a similar issue.

As a workaround you can either uninstall xgl or disable autostart with
touch ~/.config/xserver-xgl/disable

[Bug 176499] Screensaver/Powermode Crashes Gutsy

2007-12-15 Thread iltl32
Public bug reported:

Laptop
512mb RAM
ATI Radeon Express 200M
1.6ghz CPU

I have a fresh installation of gutsy (7.10). The only things done were:
a) enable wireless card
b) enabled graphics card
c) enabled compiz
d) general firefox use

(note that this problem occurs both when compiz is enabled and disabled,
so it's probably not related to that)

These three things were done automatically through their respected
interfaces, and no problems arose.

My problem is this: If Ubuntu goes into a screensaver/powersave mode,
I'm able to return by moving the mouse, but nothing in the system will
load. Menus work, but if I select a program/folder, nothing happens.
Eventually it will become completley non-responsive and I have to force-
reboot by holding down the power button.

When the screensaver is enabled, it simply doesn't work; the screen goes
black, but isn't disabled and it is still lit up, just black.

When I completely disable the screensaver and power-save options
(through the GUI), the system still puts up the black screen after about
15 minutes, and the same problem happens. There's no way to stop it
from going 'idle'.

Also related:

When I switch users or do ctrl + alt + backspace, I'm brought to a blue
screen with large, scrambled text. It says something about being unable
to load the x server, it's difficult to read. After this I'm unable to
do anything; no keys or mouse movements are accepted. I have to force-
reboot.

The bluescreen/screensaver errors didn't always happen, it just showed
up one day; it was not directly after any changes however.

As this happens every time my computer is idle for more than 15 minutes,
I'm getting nearly annoyed enough to switch back to Windows. My
experience thus far is that Ubuntu just doesn't work.

Any help would be appreciated.

P.S.

I've tried:
Disable/Enabling/Updating compiz
Disabling/Re-enabling/Updating ATI drivers (via restricted drivers interface)

Hibernate and resume work with the new kernel in Gutsy. (The graphics

fixable with an NvAGP option).

Consequently I suggest marking this bug as no longer relevant.

[Bug 176462] Re: Klavaro crashes at the end of the fluidness test

2007-12-15 Thread LordFarquaad
Sorry I figured out that I was using klavaro 1.0.4 and the repository version
for gutsy is 1.0.3-1 (but I also noticed that 1.0.5 is available for Hardy,
which I did not try). However klavaro also crashes in 1.0.3-1 but with an other
error:
*** stack smashing detected ***: klavaro terminated
Abandon (core dumped)

I tried French and English and both crash, I did not try any others. The
velocity test also crashes in French (but not in English)

Is it still useful that I do a backtrace even if a newer version is
available and the bug will probably not be solved in Gutsy ? If it is,
should I modify the description or is it better to make another bug
report ?

[Bug 176503] gnome segfault on login

2007-12-15 Thread Sense Hofstede
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-panel

When I was changing the looks of my account I noticed that
gnome-appearance-properties wouldn't start. When I inserted the command in the
terminal it told me about a segfault. I tried to solve it with restarting the X
server, but after I logged in on my account I got an empty desktop. I switched
to tty1 and logged in with the root account and found out the segfaults in
messages which are attached to this bug report(although those are just 10
minutes old). I killed the gdm processes and executed 'M_ALLOC=0 startx'. Now I
had was logged in into gnome with root. It worked fine. But the same command by
my own account still caused segfaults. I tried startx without M_ALLOC=0 at root
and it still worked.
Can the username be the cause? My username is 'sense'

I files this bug against gnome-panel because that gave the most segfaults.
update-manager gave just one, do I have to file this against that too, or
should I pick the kernel?

- Boot LiveCD with irqpoll option :
only the IRQ problem disappears, the infinite loop stays

- Boot without the ipw2100 miniPCI Wifi card :
the IRQ issue, and not infinite loop (obviously)
I install Ubuntu on the Laptop : it's the 2.6.22-14-gerneric kernel

- Boot installation without card :
no problem (no IRQ either)

- Boot installation wit card :

[Bug 21344] Re: Hang when loading ipw2100

2007-12-15 Thread tsaitgaist
Ok, I did it; with some not to bad news : it doesn't work (card not
initialized), but it doesn't hang anymore.

Procedure :
- Boot the Ubuntu Hardy Heron LiveCD Alpha 1 with card : same problem as before
 * Loading hardware drivers...
[xxx.xxx] ipw2100: eth1: Failed to start the card.
[xxx.xxx] ipw2100: eth1: Failed to start the card.
[xxx.xxx] irq 18: nobody cared (try booting with the irqpoll option)
[xxx.xxx] handlers:
[xxx.xxx] [880ef450] (ohci_irq_handler+0x0/0x980 [ohci1394])
[xxx.xxx] Disabling IRQ #18
[xxx.xxx] ipw2100: eth1: Failed to start the card.
[xxx.xxx] ipw2100: eth1: Failed to start the card.
... infinite loop, doesn't go further

- Boot installation wit card :
same as with LiveCD

- Boot without card to update kernel :
install 2.6.24-1-generic kernel. no distribution update.

- Boot the new kernel without card :
no probs

- Boot new kernel with card : houurraa
init: No resume image, doing normal boot...

[Bug 176503] Re: gnome segfault on login

2007-12-15 Thread Sense Hofstede
** Description changed:

  Binary package hint: gnome-panel

When I was changing the looks of my account I noticed that
gnome-appearance-properties wouldn't start. When I inserted the command in the
terminal it told me about a segfault. I tried to solve it with restarting the X
server, but after I logged in on my account I got an empty desktop. I switched
to tty1 and logged in with the root account and found out the segfaults in
messages which are attached to this bug report(although those are just 10
minutes old). I killed the gdm processes and executed 'M_ALLOC=0 startx'. Now I
had was logged in into gnome with root. It worked fine. But the same command by
my own account still caused segfaults. I tried startx without M_ALLOC=0 at root
and it still worked.
Can the username be the cause? My username is 'sense'
+ I thought the error could be in the hidden configuration files in my home
directory, who are still from dapper, so I removed my account, changed the name
of my home dir to sense-bak and created a new account. I could work on it for a
while, I got it configured again and the files back to their place, but then it
got segfaults again. Using nvidia or nv as display driver didn't change that. I
created a test account called test, which is a Desktop user(sense is an
Administrator), and it still works, although it is just 15 mins old.

I files this bug against gnome-panel because that gave the most segfaults.
update-manager gave just one, do I have to file this against that too, or
should I pick the kernel?
  'uname -a': Linux nott 2.6.22-14-generic #1 SMP Sun Oct 14 21:45:15 GMT 2007
x86_64 GNU/Linux
  I'm running an up-to-date Gutsy amd64.

[Bug 176515] [Hardy] Race condition in Xgl startup process

2007-12-15 Thread Jean-Baptiste Lallement
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xserver-xgl

Under certain circumstances with Xgl enabled, gnome-session fails to start
because it can't find a display.
This is because gnome-session starts before Xgl has started.

The scenario is:
1. After boot, first time you start a gnome-session from gdm with Xgl enabled
session starts correctly
2. Next logout/login session fails with a message in .xsession-errors

cannot open display:
Run '/usr/bin/seahorse-agent --help' to see a full list of available command
line options.

The workaround is to wait for Xgl process to start in /usr/share
/xserver-xgl/Xgl-session before continuing the startup process and
running the session.

Here is a patch for /usr/share/xserver-xgl/Xgl-session
144,154d143
#Wait for Xgl process to start
   TIMEOUT=5
   DISPLAYNUM=$( echo $XGL_DISPLAY | sed s/.*:// )
   while ! test -e /tmp/.X$DISPLAYNUM-lock ; do
   sleep 1;
   TIMEOUT=$(( $TIMEOUT - 1))

   # TODO If Xgl doesn't start then continue without it
   [ $TIMEOUT -lt 0 ] exit 1
   done

This happens on
Hardy
DELL D630 - cpu intel T7300
Nvidia Quadro NVS135
