[Bug 190393] [NEW] Fix for Speaker swtich not on by default with Thinkpad T61/X61

2008-02-09 Thread Jerone Young
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: alsa-utils

On Thinkpad T61/X61 or any other notebook using the AD1984 sound card.
There is a lot of confusion as no noise comes out of the speaker even
though PCM is at Maximum volume. The issue here is that the AD1984 now
has a switch for Headphone Speaker. But having this switch cut on
in the init script this resolves this issue and has sound coming out of
the speakers head phone jack.

Has been tested and will finally have these just work on Thinkpad T61.

This clears up a lot of issues, just googling around you can see users
need this problem fixed.

This patch is for /etc/init.d/alsa-utils:

[Bug 188351] Re: [Hardy] External mouse on laptop will only double-click

2008-02-09 Thread p0troast
I am experiencing the double-clicking symptoms, but not with the same
setups as many people are reporting. I provided a fix for the double-
clicking in a separate bug
(https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bug/188387/comments/1), though it
was marked as a Duplicate. The fix involves adding 'Option CorePointer'
to my touchpad InputDevice section.

Section InputDevice
Identifier Synaptics Touchpad
Driver synaptics
Option SendCoreEventstrue
Option Device/dev/psaux
Option Protocol auto-dev
Option HorizScrollDelta 0
Option CorePointer# This line gets my touchpad and
external mouse to stop double-clicking.
EndSection

[Bug 188764] Re: usplash configured for 640x480 on a 1024x768 LCD laptop

2008-02-09 Thread Saïvann Carignan
I also confirm this on Dell Inspiron 9300 laptop with ATI mobility
radeon X300. Screen and Graphics does not show anything, but the real X
resolution is 1440x900. /etc/usplash.conf contains 640x480 so usplash
works but is also rough/coarse/grainy

Also numerous comments in other bug reports confirm that a lot of
computers get 640x480 resolution in Hardy a3 and a4.

[Bug 177570] Re: [hardy] two batteries display when left clicking on g-p-m

2008-02-09 Thread Jerone Young
This is fixed, but there has not been a HAL release cut with the fix. It
is in git so you can go here and compile HAL and see that it now does
work as it should (showing the right amount of battrie(s)).

If you want to see this fixed run these commands:

1) sudo apt-get install git-core build-essential
2) sudo apt-get build-dep hal
3) git clone git://anongit.freedesktop.org/git/hal
* Now go into hal dir
4) ./autogen.sh --prefix=/usr
5) make
6) sudo make install
* Now reboot your machine and log back in. You will see the battery is now
reporting right again.

[Bug 150930] Re: Black screen, and bad usplash.conf after installation

2008-02-09 Thread Saïvann Carignan
Colin Watson : Numerous comments in different bug reports says that
usplash often get 640x480 resolution in Hardy. My own laptop which is
always in 1440x900 resolution with Xorg did have a /etc/usplash.conf of
640x480 in Hardy Alpha 4. I suggest that we take a look at this before
the final release.

bug 188764 in usplash describe the same problem, I confirmed it in
usplash but if we find that this is still the ubiquity bug, we should
mark it as a duplicate.

[Bug 40243] Re: Pressing power button hangs the system with 2.6.15-20-686

2008-02-09 Thread Jarlath
I can confirm this. If I wait long enough, the shutdown dialog does come
up. If I cancel, subsequent uses of the shutdown button applet behave
normally. So it's just the first time.

Interestingly, Hibernate and Suspend options are not available on the
first appearance of the dialog, only on the subsequent ones I mentioned.
If I can be of any more help, please say.

[Bug 190399] [NEW] evince accesses hard disk too often

Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: evince

When viewing a PDF file in non-continuous mode or in presentation mode
(maybe even always?), about 1 second after going to the next/previous
page evince accesses the hard disk so that is has to spin up if in power

2. If this problem is not fixed in Gutsy and Hardy, can you boot the Live CD
without the splash and quiet options to give us detailed error or any other
strange messages from the kernel? You can do this by typing the F6 key at the
CD menu after you choosed your keyboard layout. Remove quiet and splash
from the boot line, and press enter to boot without usplash.

[Bug 59695] Re: High frequency of load/unload cycles on some hard disks may shorten lifetime

2008-02-09 Thread Akshay Srinivasan
I was listening to my Hard drive , when running Ubuntu.I could hear the
disk heads parking , but the disk itself doesn't spin down.It spins down
-standby mode- when one runs 'hdparm -y /dev/sda'.It stayed in standby
for quite a long time.Doesn't this seem a little odd ?I thought it was
spinning down when the disk heads parked .

[Bug 139363] Re: [gutsy] Enter passphrase for LUKS/cryptsetup breaks usplash

2008-02-09 Thread Saïvann Carignan
This is probably due to the fact that usplash will only unlock the root
partition. The boot process continues and the second partition is
mounted by cryptsetup during the init.d boot sequence, so it's displayed
in console mode and remove usplash. I don't know if this can be fixed
easily.

Should this bug get fixed in usplash or cryptsetup?

There is a lot of confusion as no noise comes out of the speaker even
though PCM is at Maximum volume. The issue here is that the AD1984 now
has a switch for Headphone Speaker. But having this switch cut on
in the init script this resolves this issue and has sound coming out of
 the speakers head phone jack.

Has been tested and will finally have these just work on Thinkpad T61.

This clears up a lot of issues, just googling around you can see users

[Bug 129955] Re: usplash prevents system from booting

2008-02-09 Thread Saïvann Carignan
DaveW : Thanks for your bug report and for your contribution to ubuntu.

Your bug sounds really like bug 54621 and I would be very surprised that
it is really caused by usplash since it's a kernel panic, but we should
not exclude any possibilities. In order to get more information about
the issue that you are experiencing, can you :

1. Boot your computer multiple times without usplash and multiple times with
usplash? If the bug is really usplash related, you should always be able to
boot when usplash is not started.
2. Test the currently testing Hardy release to see if the bug still happens?

[Bug 59695] High frequency of load/unload cycles on some hard disks may shorten lifetime

2008-02-09 Thread Akshay Srinivasan
So , the hard disk doesn't exactly go into suspend when the disk head is
parked, so the kernel doesn't get to know that the disk head is
parked(because standby=parking) - it interprets this as a sign that the
hard disk is in Active/Idle mode.So it doesn't bother stopping data from
being written to the disk - this will inevitably cause the head to
unpark from the ramp. What do you guys think of this ?I think the problem
is associated with the way in which the standby command is issued (by
the kernel?).My disk never went to standby on laptop-mode , just a bunch
of head parkings.
.I used hdparm to find the mode of the HD.Hdparm doesn't wake up the
disk from standby by state -in contrast to smartctl.

Re: [Bug 59695] Re: High frequency of load/unload cycles on some hard disks may shorten lifetime

2008-02-09 Thread Akshay Srinivasan
Another interesting observation:
My hard disk -WD Scorpio - has only three power modes
1-127 Spin down for idle time of ~2 secs + Park heads
128-253 Keep parking heads , without spinning down
254/255 Don't do anything
Neither Hdparm nor the kernel can control the spin down time of my hard
disk , that is the problem.If I could do that , with -B 1 , the problem
with my hard disk will be solved , could anyone verify this on their
hard disks?

[Bug 154929] Re: Monitor Turns Off Instead Of Bootup Splash

2008-02-09 Thread Saïvann Carignan
Thanks for your bug report and for your contribution to ubuntu.

The Status of the bug report was Fix Committed. That status should be
used when a patch is sent to -proposed repositories.

Concerning the vesafb part, the ubuntu choice to reject vesafb as a
framebuffer driver was not based on nothing. vesafb can probably cause
different issues that ubuntu expect to avoid to his final users and
adding it will probably not fix the issue for everyone since the problem
you describe can be caused by many different things. Also, AFAIK, vesafb
is deprecated. I think that you may want to discuss of these matters
with ubuntu developers. However, please don't use coarse words like
stupid, this cannot lead to good community work, we need to respect
the work of each other. Ubuntu code of conduct :
http://www.ubuntu.com/community/conduct

Maybe that you can help ubuntu developers to improve the actual
situation if you're wiling to consider all aspects of the problem, and
that is, that there is a incredibly high number of hardware part that
ubuntu is expected to work with.

Thanks again for your participation

[Bug 190129] Re: screen resolution reset at maximum resolution at login

2008-02-09 Thread Ari Torhamo
This just started to happen to me too with the updates of 8th or 9th of
february. The current wrong resolution after booting is 1900 x 1200 for
both the login screen and the desktop. My monitor is a 21 CRT, for
which 4:3 is the right aspect ratio. I normally use a resolution of 1400
x 1050 or 1600 x 1200, depending on what I do. The driver I use is NV.

BTW, the resolution of the login screen also used to be correct in my
system. At least when I used the Nvidia driver for a while ago, the
resolution was the same for the login screen and the desktop. This
doesn't necessarily have anything to do with the bug in question, but
thought to mention it to you Dzamir.

Yes, I didn't introduce them because I uploaded the respective versions
of -base and -extra at the same time, and ignored the problem that it
takes different time to enter testing.

This is tangent to the bug at hand, but I think it doesn't really matter
when those packages enters testing. My understanding is that when you
uploaded those two packages at the the same time, the upgrade path in
unstable is immediately broken. Although broken upgrade in unstable
only is usually not a big problem.

Norbert, is it possible to add proper Replaces for Debian's texlive-
formats-extra package? Or is Ubuntu on its own here?

If you prefer I can add a Replaces, but is it really useful now? It is
only for the development version, right?

No, Ubuntu 7.10 (gutsy) was released with texlive-base 2007-10.

Anyway, tell me and I will add it to the Debian pacakges next upload.

We need this Replaces relation for a smooth gutsy-hardy upgrade. So if
you can add it to the Debian texlive-formats-extra package (though I
don't what exact version of texlive-latex-base it should replace), it
would be very helpful.

[Bug 190350] Re: Disk changes from sda to hda in new the kernel 2.6.24.7

2008-02-09 Thread Vikrant
I could have rather marked it as a question. I thought my drive was
mistakenly being run on SATA drivers. So does that means that hard disks
these dayscan be run on any drivers. I mean, my concern is that it
does not affect the hard disk in the long run.

[Bug 190410] [NEW] [hardy] avm-fritz-firmware-2.6.24-7 is referenced, but package repositories include only avm-fritz-firmware-2.6.17-6

2008-02-09 Thread Christian Assig
Public bug reported:

The package avm-fritz-firmware in the hardy repositories depends on
avm-fritz-firmware-2.6.24-7, see:
http://packages.ubuntu.com/hardy/misc/avm-fritz-firmware

However, avm-fritz-firmware-2.6.24-7 is not included in the repositories.
Instead, the hardy repositories only contain avm-fritz-firmware-2.6.17-6, see:
http://packages.ubuntu.com/cgi-bin/search_packages.pl?keywords=avmsearchon=namessubword=1version=hardyrelease=all

Gutsy came with kernel 2.6.22-14 and avm-fritz-firmware-2.6.22-14. Will
there be a 2.6.24 avm-fritz-firmware package for hardy, or will you drop
support for AVM ISDN cards with hardy?

TeX Math fonts are NOT NOT NOT set up for usage with unicode.
That is a fact. Forget anything in that document.
UTF is supported in text mode for many characters but far from all.

Yeah, after looking more carefully I think I see what the report wanted
to do -- use the unicode character ρ instead of \rho in LaTeX math mode.
Well, it won't surprise me it didn't work.

I guess we can close this bug, if you want to improve this please change
upstream's support for utf8 in math mode, but be prepared to learn loads
 of TeX and LaTeX internals.

I'm marking it incomplete instead, since the reporter talks a lot about
XeTeX. If the reporter can point at something saying this is supposed
to work in XeTeX, we'll look into it more. Otherwise, for (La)TeX I
agree this is not a bug, at least not an Ubuntu bug (should be a
wishlist bug for LaTeX upstream to improve UTF-8 support instead).
