[Bug 185854] Re: Setting static IP in Network Settings doesn't produce correct data

2008-03-17 Thread Shawn vega
I think i'm having the same / similar problem because when i set it to a
static ip it won't connect to the network and when i type ifconfig it
says it has a inet6 address so i think when we type an ipaddress it
automaticly converts it to ip6 when the router only knows ip4 and i
think that's the problem.

2008-03-17 Thread Richard Birnie
ZOG

Thanks for taking the time to report this bug. In order to figure out
what happened we need some more information. The trace above mentions
kubuntu 7.10. Were you trying to upgrade from 7.04 to 7.10 or from 7.10
to Hardy?

Also could you please attach the logfiles from /var/log/dist-upgrade.

thanks.

[Bug 118935] Re: [Upstream] [hardy] openoffice page numbering does not allow page offset

2008-03-17 Thread Chris Cheney
It works but the 'proper' way to do it is so unintuitive that no regular
user will probably ever find out how to do it.

I have opened a new bug about the fact the way to do it "properly" is
very non-intuitive:

"go to the first paragraph on the first page (it can be a heading).
Format -> Paragraph -> Text Flow. In part "Breaks" mark "Insert" and
"With Page Style" and set the starting page number you want."

Re: [Bug 186164] [NEW] latex: multiple texmf.cnf files do not work correctly

Huu? Example please? They do *different* things. kpsewhich gives the
file as found by the kpse lib, while kpsewhere to (from the man page):
kpsewhere - Expanding kpsewhich to separately iterate over each texmf
   tree listed in $TEXMF.

So it is not surprising that they find different files, kpsewhere will
find more files. Files can be shadowed by putting a file of the same
name into a higher order directory, that is a feature.

Best wishes

Well made a live CD and tried but it didn't recognize the MA521 card.
Remembering I had to use a WinXP driver and ndiswrapper to get it to
work I decided to just upgrade the Omnibook 6000 to 8.04 alpha 6
directly and see what happens.

IT WORKS!

2008-03-17 Thread Dagfinn Ilmari Mannsåker
I'm seeing a slight variation on this in Hardy: I can't swtich away from
the first configured layout using the keyboard shortcut. If I click the
keyboard indicator applet to switch to the second layout, cycling
further through the list using the keyboard shortcut works fine until I
reach the first layout again (tested with two, three and four layouts).

My XKB rules are as follows:

*** This bug is a security vulnerability ***

Public security bug reported:

[Bug 203433] Re: "cp" command doesn't preserve selinux context

2008-03-17 Thread tgelter
** Description changed:

  Binary package hint: coreutils

Attempting to demonstrate the power of selinux I tried the following
  demo (works in RHEL):

  [EMAIL PROTECTED]:/var/www# ls -lZ /etc/shadow
  -rw-r-+ 1 root shadow system_u:object_r:shadow_t 1193 2008-03-17 17:55

  [EMAIL PROTECTED]:/var/www# cp -a /etc/shadow .

  -rw-r-+ 1 root shadow unconfined_u:object_r:var_t 1193 2008-03-17 17:55
shadow

As you can observe, while the cp -a (cp -p obviously is no different)
preserves ownership and permissions, the selinux context is not preserved.
This has been flagged as a potential security risk because, as you can see,
selinux becomes quite useless if contexts can't be preserved while copying
things around.
Note: the "mv" command preserves the selinux context as expected.

[Bug 119180] Re: [Upstream] [hardy] OOo started with -headless exits with 0 on errors, breaking scriptability

2008-03-17 Thread Chris Cheney
Actually even though it doesn't look like it is running it is at least
on Ubuntu hardy. It only runs one instance of openoffice but tells it to
open the port, etc.

I was able to tell this by running:

[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ lsof -n | grep 8100

soffice.b 24548ccheney 52u IPv42051019 TCP
127.0.0.1:8100 (LISTEN)

So I am marking this bug as Fix Released. If after upgrading you
continue to have this problem of not being able to actually connect to
OOo in headless mode, not that it doesn't show up in ps (which is not a
bug), then please feel free to reopen the bug.

Thanks,

Chris Cheney

[Bug 140051] Re: xf86-video-amd: fails to autoconfigure

2008-03-17 Thread ckranich
Hello Martin-Éric,

Thank you very much for the precompiled packets!
(With the help of them even a linux newbee like me was able to get it running)

Beside saying thank you I wanted to report back that Xorg starts successfully on
aValue ECM-LX800 3.5" CPU module (LX800 chipset and Phoenix Award Bios 6.00PG)

The only issue I got is that together with IceWM the button faces and window
title bars show
garbage (or even a copy of the CPU load graphics!). But possibly this is an
issue of my
IceWM setup (running on top of a Ubuntu Gutsy server for minimal footprint)
I will test other windowmanagers too to see if the issue is IceWm-specific

Kind Regards,

Christian

[Bug 203434] [NEW] Firefox scrolling very slow after update from Gutsy 03/17/08

2008-03-17 Thread brownknight
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: firefox-3.0

I am using Gutsy on a Dell E1505. I did a dist-upgrade -d to Hardy today
and Firefox scrolling has been really slow. It affects all websites
wether with images or with text only. If I press the up arrow and
release it, the page is still scrolling. If I did an up down up down
scroll, the page lags behind.

[Bug 203433] [NEW] "cp" command doesn't preserve selinux context

2008-03-17 Thread tgelter
*** This bug is a security vulnerability ***

Public security bug reported:

Binary package hint: coreutils

Attempting to demonstrate the power of selinux I tried the following
demo (works in RHEL):

[EMAIL PROTECTED]:/var/www# ls -lZ /etc/shadow
-rw-r-+ 1 root shadow system_u:object_r:shadow_t 1193 2008-03-17 17:55
/etc/shadow
[EMAIL PROTECTED]:/var/www# cp -a /etc/shadow .
[EMAIL PROTECTED]:/var/www# ls -lZ shadow
-rw-r-+ 1 root shadow unconfined_u:object_r:var_t 1193 2008-03-17 17:55
shadow

As you can observe, while the cp -a (cp -p obviously is no different) preserves
ownership and permissions, the selinux context is not preserved.
This has been flagged as a potential security risk because, as you can see,
selinux becomes quite useless if contexts can't be preserved while copying
things around.
Note: the "mv" command preserves the selinux context as expected.

[Bug 185190] Re: Clock applet chooses wrong timezone for many cities (eg Pittsburgh, Beijing)

2008-03-17 Thread Constantine Evans
I agree that the solution is rather wanting, and believe that the
timezone-guessing code is something that does not belong in any release.
The idea of it not selecting a timezone at all is interesting: it would
be very easy to do - I can make the patch if necessary - and wouldn't
require any extra work.

However, I don't think upstream will accept that solution, whereas I
think that having timezone data in the Locations.xml would be more
likely to be accepted.

If someone who has the ability to actually apply any of the patches here
would give an opinion on what should be done, I would be happy to
implement the code (though I certainly can't enter the timezone data!).

[Bug 203429] [NEW] resume script missing functions

2008-03-17 Thread Justin Dugger

In Hardy, I get an error on boot (boot ultimately succeeds):

and
"/scripts/local-premount/resume/: /scripts/local-premount/resume: 57:

[Bug 203264] Re: lost my spell check. and I think I tried everything possble up tp re-install with no result. Any ideas"

2008-03-17 Thread Chris Cheney
Check to verify it is installed by going to:

Tools->Options->Language Settings->Languages make sure there is a blue
checkmark with ABC next to it for the language you have selected

if it isn't there then File->Wizards->Install new dictionaries

if it is there then check this setting also:

Tools->Options->Language Settings->Writing Aids and make sure the
spellcheck options are enabled.

Let me know if the above solved the problem for you.

Thanks,

Chris Cheney

[Bug 202418] GNOME improvement proposals

2008-03-17 Thread YannUbuntu
Thank you for your answer.

So I understand that GNOME has got two default language parameters (please tell
me if I am wrong):
(1) Default language for each session, which can be modified when opening a
session
(2) Default language for the system (language for new user accounts and the
login screen), which can be modified in the "Language support" menu.
I also remarked that when using "Logout", the login screen is displayed with
the previous session language (when "Change user" will lead to a login screen
displayed in default system language).

So the problem I had was not a bug, but as the user is not warned that
there are 2 default languages, it can be interpreted as a bug by the
user.

Now I think there are two points to be improved:
(A) if there is only one session on the PC: changing one of the two default
languages (1) or (2) should naturally change also the other default language
(or display a menu proposing to).
(B) as soon as a user chooses his login, the login screen should be displayed
in the default language of this user's session.

Please tell me if this is the accurate place to propose these GNOME
improvements.

Best regards,
Yann

[Bug 137247] Re: libpam-keyring broken on autologins

2008-03-17 Thread Chuck Leduc
The Gnome developers will say this is "intended functionality" because
the Gnome keyring is (supposedly) used for other things, and they don't
want it to be subverted by autologin. I would argue that if the Gnome
keyring is so sacred then WPA passwords and WEP keys shouldn't be kept
in the Gnome keyring: an alternate method should be used.

Of course, nobody uses the Gnome keyring for anything else because it is
too damned annoying, and, well, cryptic. In any case, it turns out that
if somebody gets physical access to my machine they can get hold of the
wireless keys no matter what. So BFD. Give it up.

(The main reason I didn't accept maintainership of the old project back
when Fabrice offered it was I refuse to deal with a CVS repository in
the 21st century. Fabrice was ok with a new project based on tcc using
a different repository format, but wanted his old project to stay in the
CVS repository. *Shrug*)

[Bug 201627] Re: tiny c compiler, fork of old tcc

2008-03-17 Thread Rob Landley
I suspect he's talking about tinycc, a project I maintain which started
out as a collection of fixes for tcc back in 2006 and which I got
Fabrice Bellard's permission to turn into a full fledged project of its
own (licensed under GPLv2) a year later. (Fabrice is off dealing with
qemu and not maintaining tcc anymore, his reaction to my fork turning
into a real project was, and I quote, "have fun".)

The project web page is at http://landley.net/code/tinycc and that links
to the mailing list, mercurial repository, and downloads page.

There's more detailed history at the end of the README file:
http://landley.net/hg/tinycc/file/tip/README

I use the name "tinycc" to distinguish the project from the old tcc.

My project builds on an x86-64 host (doesn't output x86-64 binaries yet, but
I'm working on it). It's much more cross-compiler friendly, and possible to
build against things like uClibc. I have a todo list as long as your arm:
http://landley.net/code/tinycc/todo.txt

And my ultimate goal with this thing is to build an unmodified Linux
kernel and complete (uClibc based) root filesystem with it, then get the
whole system to rebuild under itself without gcc or binutils. I also
want to add x86-64, powerpc, and mips targets, but I still have a lot of
learning to do there...

[Bug 137510] Re: better console setup

2008-03-17 Thread Dana Goyette
One thing I've noticed (and appreciated) recently: now both Xorg and
console-setup offer a "US International (AltGr Deadkeys)" layout. This allows
me to _not_ have dead keys under normal usage, and then merely press right-alt
to use deadkeys and ordinary altgr-alphanumeric keys. This might be reasonable
as a default.
The only oddity is that the console-setup version doesn't work properly for
combinations like altgr-shift-apostrophe, shift-O, for Ö;
The xorg equivalent works fine.

+ RandR 1.2 does not support multiple boards yet (it's planned for RandR
+ 1.3). It means that any RandR 1.2 aware driver will crash the server if
+ you have 2 boards. Even one board with a RandR 1.2 driver and another
+ board with a classic driver does not work. It just crashes the X server.

[Bug 203418] [NEW] can't login

2008-03-17 Thread Ariyau
Public bug reported:

When trying to log in to the system after reboot system hangs after
putting in the password. The only other noticeable change is that login
prompt sounds do not seem to work. First happened after applying an
update to alsa about week ago. The only change from default is that
I've complied and installed glutenprint 5.1.7 and Iscan.

Thanks
Umesh

[Bug 123776] Re: [Upstream] [hardy] "Background Color" button in OpenOffice.org 2.2 different than the other buttons of the same type

2008-03-17 Thread Chris Cheney
After looking into this issue further the buttons aren't the same type
which is why they don't look the same. The buttons that look like 'Font
Color' (of which there are several) allow you to apply the current
color, etc by pressing the left part of the button, the right part lets
you select something different. On the buttons which are all one piece,
like 'Background Color', each time you press them you have to select
what you want to do.

[Bug 185190] Re: Clock applet chooses wrong timezone for many cities (eg Pittsburgh, Beijing)

2008-03-17 Thread Steve Langasek
I still believe the correct solution for hardy is to not infer a
timezone based on the city coordinates at all, and instead fix the
timezone selector. Trying to get correct timezone settings for all
locations is going to take a lot of time and effort - relying on this
means we will still have users for hardy who get the wrong tz
suggestion.
