[Bug 39484] Re: cups smb printing backend no longer works

2008-04-16 Thread Steve Langasek
This bug is a segfault of the smb cups backend that was fixed in Ubuntu
6.06. Please do not use it as a generic dumping ground for reporting
issues with smb printing problems. In particular, Local authentication
certificate not found! is *not* an error message indicating the
presence of this bug.

socceroos, your log clearly shows that you are unable to authenticate to
the print server. That's unrelated to this bug, and most likely not a
bug at all but a configuration error.

Closing this bug again.

[Bug 112023] Re: File transfer to windows hangs

2008-04-16 Thread Illuvator
Interestingly I have been having this problem on Hardy server. This isnt
on VMWare this is on an actual box, which although old appears to be
working fine. All network processes seem to have issues, falling into
some form of hang after a while, but I am posting here because the error
declared by the windows box is exactly as above: The specified network
name is no longer available I am not sure what is causing this, but it
certainly doesnt happen on gutsy, only on a test box with hardy on it.
Is there any further ideas on what is causing this?

[Bug 210468] Re: try to access a .Trash-$USER directory on autofs mounts

2008-04-16 Thread Sebastian Kapfer
On a medium-sized installation with a few thousand automounter entries,
the resulting mount storm makes the system unusable. It is constantly
spawning new automount processes (almost like a fork bomb) and keeps
haldaemon at 99% CPU. Not sure how gvfs triggers this, a simple stat
/home/.Trash (where /home is autofs) sure doesn't trigger a mount storm.

This is happening from time to time; the bug was also in feisty and
seems to be more likely to occurr in hardy.

[Bug 181977] Re: Mutiple file transfers appear to cause libmtp to hang

Metoo.

Hardy Heron 8.04 here, gnome, mtpfs.

I have to manually

$ mkdir foo ; mtpfs foo

then my Creative Zen V mounts OK; single files seem to copy OK but drags
of directories in nautilus queue up a lot of data or something (progress
thermometer gets to about 30%) then nautilus reports failure (write
permission) then mtpfs crashes.

Just running gnomad2 for now.

[Bug 218463] [NEW] fstab entry in Hardy Beta points to null /dev entry (upgrade from Gutsy)

2008-04-16 Thread miwarlock002
Public bug reported:

After upgrade to Hardy Beta, the /etc/fstab entry for /media/cdrom
becomes incorrect and points to a null device (/dev/hda). This forces a
new name under /media instead of mounting the unified location (i.e.
/media/cdrom(0)).

Expected: Device to mount and the wine software to recognize the dvd
burner as before.

Occured: Device mounted to a new name in the /media directory.

Steps to repeat: None (resolved issue independently).

I alleviated this by doing a file check for the /dev/hda entry:

ls /dev/hd*
ls: cannot access /dev/hd: No such file or directory

Then checked for where it was truly mounted:

mount
/dev/scd0 on /media/disc volume type iso9660 (ro,nosuid,nodev,user=blahblah)

Modified the fstab to read:
/dev/scd0/media/cdrom0 udf,iso9660 user,noauto,exec 0 0

This resolved the issue for me without a reboot.

[Bug 218032] Re: Hardy Heron: Adding SMB printer fails

2008-04-16 Thread socceroos
I think I may have narrowed down the issue. I changed the cupsd.conf
LogLevel to 'debug'.

When adding a printer via SMB with 'requires authentication' ticked and
filled out I noticed that the logfile says:

CUPS-Add-Modify-Printer client-error-not-possible: Bad device-uri
smb://myusername:MyComplexpAss/1/2/3@/server/PRINTERSHARENAME!

My Password has forward-slashes in it and so does the device URI. From
what I can see, they're not being escaped properly which may be causing
the 'Bad device-uri' error.

[Bug 218465] [NEW] Strange statistics of BOINC Manager

2008-04-16 Thread shanen (Shannon Jacobs)
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: boinc-manager

Not so serious, but annoying... The statistics are pretty weird, and
especially at the end of a job (work unit?). Basically it will be
working along pretty steadily, and the progress statistics make pretty
good sense, but then it will get all weird. I've seen it frozen at some
high percentage like 99.860% for very long periods of time. Today I was
watching it finish one so I could shut down the machine, and it hung
there for many minutes. Then it started counting PAST 100%. I wasn't
sure what it thought it was doing, but it eventually got up to around
105% of completion--and suddenly fell back to 100% and sent the results
in. There should be some kind of sanity check there...

This may be related to the specific project that I'm sanctioned to
support, the World Community Grid. I have to note that the
implementation of that particular project seems rather suspect. I sure
hope their results are better than the visible part they show to the
donors. For example, their system very often tosses results so the
progress graph is like a flight of stairs. I'm glad to help them in
fighting cancer and so forth, but it feels like a big waste when so many
of the donated hours are just tossed away. Also, their system used to be
really bad about assigning tasks that a particular system couldn't even
handle, so the job would just freeze while waiting for memory and the
project needed to be reset--again tossing away some of the donated work.
(They may have fixed that last problem, since I haven't seen it in a
while.)

[Bug 193139] Re: hardy ooo missing jre - system crashed

2008-04-16 Thread Louis-Dominique Dubeau
I've run into the same problem. The package openoffice.org-java-common
was installed (2.4.0-3ubuntu5) and yet the problem still occurred. I
had to delete
$HOME/.openoffice.org2/user/config/javasettings_Linux_x86.xml to get
things back to normal.

Things coming to mind:

1. Probably OO should be configurable to use the default system JRE.
That way if people keep OO to the default and install and remove system
JREs, they won't run into this problem.

2. Some of us used IcedTea on Gutsy. In Hardy IcedTea seems to have
been replaced by OpenJDK. The paths are different.

This has not caused any other instability on my system. Only OO was
affected.

(http://icanhascheezburger.com/). Tonight it is perfectly reproducible.
I can start Firefox, start Google Reader, click on the Lolcats feed, and
Firefox will crash.

I'm running Firefox 2.0.0.13 and Ubuntu Gutsy.

well, I can't reproduce this issue.
I reboot the laptop, and now all the keys work correctly.

[Bug 204996] Re: Linux kernel 2.6.24-12 lockup

2008-04-16 Thread Anthony Chianese
I'm having a problem that may be the same as this, also using the latest
Hardy beta. I'm using network-manager, which automatically detected my
Linksys WMP54G wireless PCI card as RaLink RT2561/RT61 802.11g PCI. It
works very well until the crash, which causes the system to become
completely unresponsive (no keyboard or mouse response, Capslock and
Scroll lock blink, nothing is added to syslog at the time of crash).

I can reproduce the crash easily by asking rsync to sync a directory
across my local network.. After 2-3 minutes, it crashes. I'm willing to
provide any additional information someone wants, but I'm not sure right
how to get more information about the cause. The system has also crashed
while I was surfing the web using firefox or downloading a large number
of emails in thunderbird, always while the network is transferring data.

[Bug 204996] Re: Linux kernel 2.6.24-12 lockup

2008-04-16 Thread martyg
I think I am seeing the same issue on my little server.

Screen goes blank. No mouse response.
Can''t switch VC's, CTL-ALT-BS, or CTL-ALT-DEL.
Not accessible from network either.

Next time it happens, I'll try doing a ALT-SysRq-E and dig around.

No idea how to reproduce - Just happens ranodomly.
No obvious artifacts in logs I can send the maintainers.

This machine has been 100% stable on Debian for past 3 years! (Running 24/7)
Hardware is AMD64 barebone desktop with cheapo ATI graphics.

I am enclosing my system description as requested in an earlier post by
the kernel maintainers.

[Bug 195929] Re: Cosmetic bug: rectangular white outline surrounding rounded buttons

2008-04-16 Thread Conn
A little update.

I have been testing Fedora rawhide and noticed that their nodoka gtk
engine (originally based on murrine, I believe) uses the same fix as I
posted in this bug for Ubuntulooks and Murrine (originally found by
Andrea Cimitan). The issue with GtkEntry boxes is more complicated and
will require cooperation from the Mozilla and GTK folks, so it's out of
our hands.

What I do recommend is that the maintainers of the gtk2-engines-murrine
and gtk2-engines-ubuntulooks packages will review and include the
patches.

Re: [Bug 201330] Re: [regression] need to whitelist multiple ATI cards, or remove blacklisting

2008-04-16 Thread Chad Bernier
oh i thought it wasn't enabled by default. I installed hardy a long time
ago, and have been using ubuntu since dapper beta. I thought you had to go
enable desktop effects. maybe I just had to go form minimal to custom or
something.

How many clueless people really run linux anyways? I know it is getting
easier and easier every year. But bussiness and schools would have a system
administrator to take care of these things. People who buy their computers
with linux pre-installed would be taken care of by the manufacturer. People
who custom build computers from scratch could figure it out too. People who
have their computers fixed by a family member or something would have them
to take care of it. So?

How many people buy a computer with windows, are responsible for maintaining
it themselves, figure out that linux even exists, decides to install it, and
still can't diagnose simple issues? I think that most computer clueless
people don't even know what linux or ubuntu is.

yea i added the skip checks thing, and it's all fixed by now. but the
reason i use ubuntu is because I don't want to mess with my system all the
time. I can figure out how to compile things from source, and all that
jibber jabber. I do sometimes. But I don't want to have to. I shouldn't
have to use such a workaround because some computer illiterate people try to
run linux on bad hardware. I buy computers specifically with linux in mind
and try to only buy linux compatible hardware. that is one of the main
reasons i bought a thinkpad.

I am using a beta version so i can put up with this stuff. I find it a
little bit fun. but I don't like the idea of someone deliberately crippling
my computer. again this isn't about me, but how many people are almost like
me? the people who could fix the issue but don't want to.

I dunno, you guys do what you think is best. I might quit ubuntu when i get
a new computer because it bores me. I like that i can usually get help and
usually find things in debs. I like how it works pretty well most of the
time. But i don't like it when i need something new and have to jump
through all kinds of hoops to get it. i think i want to find something
gentoo based. ubuntu is great for work computers, but no fun for personal
computers. my next computer will be powerful enough to have both. I should
get two new computers. some things only a desktop can do, and other things
only a laptop. both of mine are aging. but there is the issue of low income
and high debt.

sorry for all that. I'm just bored. I know I am not the person this is
aimed at. First of all, it will be aimed at people who don't run alpha/beta
OSs. I always find myself in between the cracks though. its like with cell
phones. use them too much and prepaid is just as expensive as contract.
but you don't use the whole contract. They screw you either way.

you can delete this message if you want. I just don't get any attention
anymore. I ended up with no friends for a whole year and won't be making
any new ones until september probably. I tried being not enrolled in school
for a year. I found the real world to be terrible, am living with parents,
and have no friends because none of them live near here. I found little work
i was willing to do, which ended up working for a college partime, but that
way doesn't make you friends. I always do things a weird way and it has
downsides.

hopefully the ATI bug will be fixed in Hardy+1. anyone who would use only
LTS releases does not need compiz.

thank you everyone. the ubuntu community is awesome.

Okay, I showed bug 195051 to Alex and chatted with him a bit.

A lot of -ati's internals were written prior to having access to
register documentation, so there's a lot of educated guesses in -ati
that proved to be wrong once the docs were in hand, and lead to random
crashes like this, and Alex believes this is the case with this bug. He
did not have a workaround to suggest, and confirmed Travis' finding that
the issue is not going to be limited to a specific chipset so pci id
checks wouldn't be a reliable workaround. He has plans to go through
and fix up all these mappings correctly, within the next 3-6 months.
Unfortunately that rules out a 8.04.1 fix (and even if it could be
achieved in that timeframe, the size of the rework would probably be
 beyond our bug-risk threshhold.)

Meanwhile, I'll make sure alex remains aware of the bug, and try to
improve the reports upstream so it will be fixed for Intrepid. The work
can be tracked at bug 195051 here, and at
 http://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=15096 upstream (unless
someone knows of a more appropriate upstream bug?) So, I'm resetting
 this to WONTFIX.

Hello Pedro,

Sorry for the delay in responding to your instructions for the backtrace. I
live in a popular tourist spot, and playing tour guide for family has pretty
much eaten my life for the last month.

I have followed the instructions on the indicated page. I've outlined what I
did below, so please advise if I've missed something.

* I had to add the multiverse tag to the line deb
http://ddebs.ubuntu.comgutsy main universe in /etc/apt/sources.list
in order for for apt-get to
find and install nspluginwrapper-dbgsym.

* I attached gdb to npviewer.bin after firefox v 3.0b5 was already running,
but before accessing a Flash-encrusted site.

* Possibly a problem or not, but gdb claimed no debugging symbols found in
this version of npviewer.bin. The relevant line seems to be:

Reading symbols from
/usr/lib/nspluginwrapper/i386/linux/npviewer.bin...Reading symbols from
/usr/lib/debug/usr/lib/nspluginwrapper/i386/linux/npviewer.bin...(no
debugging symbols found)...done.
(no debugging symbols found)...done.

The bug has not recurred since I started gdb. I can either provide more
detail of what I did (in case I made a mistake in the procedure) or we can
await an npviewer.bin crash. At that point, I'll upload the backtrace.

Regards
CDR

I tracked down the bug to be a BIOS issue. Updating the motherboard BIOS
allowed the installation to go ahead without any problems. The installer
still retrieved an updated kernel from the Internet, which I believe should
be left until after the installation completes.

2008-04-16 Thread nltnjnns
Hi -

I truly appreciate all of your effort. I was not able to fully load this
page. It would partially load, and then just 'spin'.

While it was spinning, I pressed the Get Started button. Then it
eventually timed out with the following message:

Connection Interrupted
The connection to the server was reset while the page was loading.
The network link was interrupted while negotiating a connection. Please try
again.

This happened on several attempts.

After receiving this error, I immediately went to youtube watched a
video. So my network connection was working properly.

Thanks again. It sounds like you have a suspicion as to what the problem
is. If I can help further, please let me know.

[Bug 38313] Re: Brightness too dark after sleep

2008-04-16 Thread Trip
Hi Greg,
It's a little hard to test this one the same as before because the auto
changing of the brightness doesn't seem to be working at all anymore. It
doesn't dim down by itself when removing the power, even though I ticked the
box in Gnome power management.

I set the brightness to full using the Power Manager Brightness Applet 2.22.1,
went into Suspend, came back out and the brightness was still full.
I then did the same but set the brightness to the lowest level and it started
back up at the lowest level.
Just to make sure, I set it to half way and suspended again and it started back
up at the correct level.

Not too sure if you want to shut this bug report down or not?

At LAN, other machines can load successful this pages.

At my machine, with wget I get what you can see in the last log.
At firefox the message is:

The network link was interrupted while negotiating a connection. Please try

Firefox was doing is job correctly.

Re: [Bug 202026] Re: /etc/avahi/etc/localtime not removed on upgrade

2008-04-16 Thread Daniel Pittman
Jamie Strandboge [EMAIL PROTECTED] writes:

It is not clear to me why /etc/avahi/etc/localtime still exists. Can
you explain your upgrade procedure and any problems you may have had?

The procedure? I installed a fresh Ubuntu Hardy to this machine around
the second stable release, then used 'aptitude dist-upgrade' every day
or two to fetch all the latest updates.[1]

In the meantime, you can simply remove /etc/avahi/etc/localtime and
 /etc/avahi/etc.

OK: My guess is that they were not correctly removed by the Avahi
packages during upgrades inside the Hardy cycle, but that file was also
present earlier in the picture, I understand.

In any case I have now removed it.

Regards,
Daniel

Footnotes:
[1] The T61p laptop I am using is much happier with a very recent
kernel and driver set, sadly. Cutting edge hardware, eh?

[Bug 204996] Re: Linux kernel 2.6.24-12 lockup

2008-04-16 Thread martyg
Following Anthony's guidance, I have been able to reproduce once in just a few
minutes by loading up the network as much as I can.
Regrettably, haven't been able to do it again after trying for about 30 minutes.
But, at this point, I am convinced this issue is network traffic related. This
is consistent with my other failures earlier today.

No response to ALT-SysRq-E after the failure. Need to power cycle to continue.
After rebooting, nothing in the logs.

Note I have observed this issue on both NICs I have installed on this system.
(After getting a couple of these, I rolled my connection over to the other NIC
and have been seeing it there too)

[Bug 197173] Re: Lite-on ata exception preventing automount

2008-04-16 Thread tones111
I've been continuing to try and get automounting working. With firmware
updates to both my motherboard and the optical drive in question I'm
still seeing the problem with 2.6.24-16-generic. One observation I've
made is that discs will automount if I boot the computer with a disc
already in the drive. I still receive the sata exceptions but swapping
discs results in the expected automounting behavior.

2008-04-16 Thread Cristiano Meira Magalhaes
You can have it work by specifying the Orientation in every printers in Cups
 System - Printing
For each printer select Job Options tab and specify Orientation to whatever
 else instead of Automatic Rotation.

I comfirm Trinh Phuoc Thai is right.

I follow his instructions and now Java 6 executes Print Dialog.

[Bug 218478] [NEW] X server will not start after enabling restricted nvidia drivers

2008-04-16 Thread Laszlo Pandy
Public bug reported:

I have an NVidia graphics card NV18 [GeForce4 MX - nForce GPU]. When I
first installed Hardy beta the resolution would not go any higher than
800x600, so I went to System Administration Hardware Drivers, and
selected to enable the restricted nvidia drivers. It installs the
nvidia-glx package and then tells me I need to restart the system.
However once I restart the system, the X server no longer starts and I
am dropped to the text console. And I thought the new X server was
supposed to be bulletproof.

After trying to start the X server manually, I found the error in the console
output:
(==) Using config file: /etc/X11/xorg.conf
Parse error on line 4 of section Device in file /etc/X11/xorg.conf
This section must have an Identifier line.
(EE) Problem parsing the config file
(EE) Error parsing the config file

Before I enabled the restricted drivers, there was no xorg.conf file. But now
that it needed to request the restricted nvidia graphics driver, it created a
new xorg.conf file. This file is what was causing the X server to crash. After
I added:
IdentifierDefault Device
to the Device section and:
IdentifierDefault Screen
to the Screen section, the X server worked perfectly.

I have attached below the original xorg.conf file that was created by
enabling the restricted nvidia drivers (named xorg.conf.broken) and
the file modified by me which works perfectly xorg.conf.fixed). With
this modified file the nvidia drivers work and that has fixed both my
resolution problems and allows compiz to work.
