[Bug 39484] Re: cups smb printing backend no longer works
This bug is a segfault of the smb cups backend that was fixed in Ubuntu 6.06. Please do not use it as a generic dumping ground for reporting issues with smb printing problems. In particular, Local authentication certificate not found! is *not* an error message indicating the presence of this bug. socceroos, your log clearly shows that you are unable to authenticate to the print server. That's unrelated to this bug, and most likely not a bug at all but a configuration error. [Bug 218463] [NEW] fstab entry in Hardy Beta points to null /dev entry (upgrade from Gutsy)

[Bug 218465] [NEW] Strange statistics of BOINC Manager
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: boinc-manager Not so serious, but annoying... The statistics are pretty weird, and especially at the end of a job (work unit?). Basically it will be working along pretty steadily, and the progress statistics make pretty good sense, but then it will get all weird. I've seen it frozen at some high percentage like 99.860% for very long periods of time. Today I was watching it finish one so I could shut down the machine, and it hung there for many minutes. Then it started counting PAST 100%. I wasn't sure what it thought it was doing, but it eventually got up to around 105% of completion--and suddenly fell back to 100% and sent the results in. There should be some kind of sanity check there... This may be related to the specific project that I'm sanctioned to support, the World Community Grid. I have to note that the implementation of that particular project seems rather suspect. I sure hope their results are better than the visible part they show to the donors. For example, their system very often tosses results so the progress graph is like a flight of stairs. I'm glad to help them in fighting cancer and so forth, but it feels like a big waste when so many of the donated hours are just tossed away. Also, their system used to be really bad about assigning tasks that a particular system couldn't even handle, so the job would just freeze while waiting for memory and the project needed to be reset--again tossing away some of the donated work. I had to delete $HOME/.openoffice.org2/user/config/javasettings_Linux_x86.xml to get things back to normal. Things coming to mind: 1. Probably OO should be configurable to use the default system JRE. That way if people keep OO to the default and install and remove system JREs, they won't run into this problem. 2. Some of us used IcedTea on Gutsy. In Hardy IcedTea seems to have been replaced by OpenJDK. The paths are different. This has not caused any other instability on my system. [Bug 195929] Re: Cosmetic bug: rectangular white outline surrounding rounded buttons
A little update. I have been testing Fedora rawhide and noticed that their nodoka gtk engine (originally based on murrine, I believe) uses the same fix as I posted in this bug for Ubuntulooks and Murrine (originally found by Andrea Cimitan). The issue with GtkEntry boxes is more complicated and will require cooperation from the Mozilla and GTK folks, so it's out of our hands. What I do recommend is that the maintainers of the gtk2-engines-murrine and gtk2-engines-ubuntulooks packages will review and include the patches. -- Cosmetic bug: rectangular white outline surrounding rounded buttons https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/195929 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

Re: [Bug 201330] Re: [regression] need to whitelist multiple ATI cards, or remove blacklisting
oh i thought it wasn't enabled by default. I installed hardy a long time ago, and have been using ubuntu since dapper beta. I thought you had to go enable desktop effects. maybe I just had to go form minimal to custom or something. How many clueless people really run linux anyways? I know it is getting easier and easier every year. But bussiness and schools would have a system administrator to take care of these things. People who buy their computers with linux pre-installed would be taken care of by the manufacturer. People who custom build computers from scratch could figure it out too. People who have their computers fixed by a family member or something would have them to take care of it. So? How many people buy a computer with windows, are responsible for maintaining it themselves, figure out that linux even exists, decides to install it, and still can't diagnose simple issues? I think that most computer clueless people don't even know what linux or ubuntu is. yea i added the skip checks thing, and it's all fixed by now. but the reason i use ubuntu is because I don't want to mess with my system all the time. I can figure out how to compile things from source, and all that jibber jabber. I do sometimes. But I don't want to have to. I shouldn't have to use such a workaround because some computer illiterate people try to run linux on bad hardware. I buy computers specifically with linux in mind and try to only buy linux compatible hardware. that is one of the main reasons i bought a thinkpad. I am using a beta version so i can put up with this stuff. I find it a little bit fun. but I don't like the idea of someone deliberately crippling my computer. again this isn't about me, but how many people are almost like me? the people who could fix the issue but don't want to. I dunno, you guys do what you think is best. I might quit ubuntu when i get a new computer because it bores me. I like that i can usually get help and usually find things in debs. I like how it works pretty well most of the time. But i don't like it when i need something new and have to jump through all kinds of hoops to get it. i think i want to find something gentoo based. ubuntu is great for work computers, but no fun for personal computers. my next computer will be powerful enough to have both. I should get two new computers. some things only a desktop can do, and other things only a laptop. both of mine are aging. but there is the issue of low income and high debt. sorry for all that. I'm just bored. I know I am not the person this is aimed at. First of all, it will be aimed at people who don't run alpha/beta OSs. I always find myself in between the cracks though. its like with cell phones. use them too much and prepaid is just as expensive as contract. but you don't use the whole contract. They screw you either way. you can delete this message if you want. I just don't get any attention anymore. I ended up with no friends for a whole year and won't be making any new ones until september probably. I tried being not enrolled in school for a year. I found the real world to be terrible, am living with parents, and have no friends because none of them live near here. I found little work i was willing to do, which ended up working for a college partime, but that way doesn't make you friends. I always do things a weird way and it has downsides. hopefully the ATI bug will be fixed in Hardy+1. anyone who would use only LTS releases does not need compiz. thank you everyone. the ubuntu community is awesome. On Wed, Apr 16, 2008 at 7:58 PM, Bryce Harrington [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Okay, I showed bug 195051 to Alex and chatted with him a bit. A lot of -ati's internals were written prior to having access to register documentation, so there's a lot of educated guesses in -ati that proved to be wrong once the docs were in hand, and lead to random crashes like this, and Alex believes this is the case with this bug. He did not have a workaround to suggest, and confirmed Travis' finding that the issue is not going to be limited to a specific chipset so pci id checks wouldn't be a reliable workaround. He has plans to go through and fix up all these mappings correctly, within the next 3-6 months. Unfortunately that rules out a 8.04.1 fix (and even if it could be achieved in that timeframe, the size of the rework would probably be beyond our bug-risk threshhold.) Meanwhile, I'll make sure alex remains aware of the bug, and try to improve the reports upstream so it will be fixed for Intrepid. The work can be tracked at bug 195051 here, and at http://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=15096 upstream (unless someone knows of a more appropriate upstream bug?) [Bug 218478] [NEW] X server will not start after enabling restricted nvidia drivers
Public bug reported: I have an NVidia graphics card NV18 [GeForce4 MX - nForce GPU]. When I first installed Hardy beta the resolution would not go any higher than 800x600, so I went to System Administration Hardware Drivers, and selected to enable the restricted nvidia drivers. It installs the nvidia-glx package and then tells me I need to restart the system. However once I restart the system, the X server no longer starts and I am dropped to the text console. And I thought the new X server was supposed to be bulletproof. After trying to start the X server manually, I found the error in the console output: (==) Using config file: /etc/X11/xorg.conf Parse error on line 4 of section Device in file /etc/X11/xorg.conf This section must have an Identifier line. (EE) Problem parsing the config file (EE) Error parsing the config file Before I enabled the restricted drivers, there was no xorg.conf file. But now that it needed to request the restricted nvidia graphics driver, it created a new xorg.conf file. This file is what was causing the X server to crash. After I added: IdentifierDefault Device to the Device section and: IdentifierDefault Screen to the Screen section, the X server worked perfectly. I have attached below the original xorg.conf file that was created by enabling the restricted nvidia drivers (named xorg.conf.broken) and the file modified by me which works perfectly xorg.conf.fixed).
