[Bug 83715] Re: local loopback interface isn't brought up on boot

2008-04-21 Thread Nick Jenkins
Running 8.04 RC Hardy Heron, experiencing a similar problem. Upgraded a few
days ago from 7.10, and in 7.10 I could not print reliably in evince (ended up
assuming it was a buggy app and installing acroread instead), and I would get a
~3 minute delay on login. The same annoying ~3 minute delay persisted in 8.04
RC, and furthermore I would often get a gnome session error on login. By good
luck I came across this bug (after many unsuccessful attempts to google for
similar problem reports). From the comments here, I then tried pinging
localhost, and got no answer, and "ifconfig" showed no loopback interface. The
solution was very simple - just add these 3 lines to /etc/network/interfaces :
# The loopback network interface
auto lo
iface lo inet loopback

... and I rebooted and now logging in is fast and quick. Yay! I have no
idea where the loopback interface lines went to from the interfaces
file. Maybe some bit of software deleted it? Maybe I deleted it? Seems a
bit unlikely to me though, as I have no recollection of doing that.

[Bug 194678] Re: LTS-to-LTS upgrade failed on python

2008-04-21 Thread Guillaume Tamboise
I was trying to perform a desktop LTS - to - desktop LTS upgrade and
ended up with what looked like a depedency hell. In other words, a
window popped up and explained in (some form of) French that
dependencies could not be resolved, the upgrade failed and my system
reverted back to Dapper. I tried a second time, same result.

In both cases, the command line looked like this:

$ gksu "update-manager -d"
warnings.warn("apt API not stable yet", FutureWarning)
extracting '/tmp/tmpZg150V/hardy.tar.gz'
authenticate '/tmp/tmpZg150V/hardy.tar.gz' against
'/tmp/tmpZg150V/hardy.tar.gz.gpg'
WARNING: Failed to read mirror file
WARNING: Failed to read mirror file

I meant to get a screen capture in order to get the full message in
English, so I tried this, but then it worked:

$ export LANG=C
$ gksu "update-manager -d"
warnings.warn("apt API not stable yet", FutureWarning)
extracting '/tmp/tmpo5KXdQ/hardy.tar.gz'
authenticate '/tmp/tmpo5KXdQ/hardy.tar.gz' against
'/tmp/tmpo5KXdQ/hardy.tar.gz.gpg'
WARNING: Failed to read mirror file

WARNING: Failed to read mirror file

Then pop-up message gave three "reasons" for failure (all revolving around
unsupported packages, which does not really make much sense in my case).
Anyway, here is my /var/log/dist-upgrade, sorry I do not have files showing the
failure.

I would suspect that my problem is related with calculating depencies
failing when the locale is not "C".

[Bug 218532] Re: pulseaudio sounds breaking when workrave take over the full screen

2008-04-21 Thread Dan Andresan
Workaround:

type in a terminal, as a user
pulseaudio -k

this will kill pulseaudio, and alsa will be used directly (not through
pulseaudio). You need to restart rhythmbox to pick up the new card (when
pulseaudio is running it makes itself the default audio card. Without it, alsa
will became default)
My audio card (onboard) is able to mix audio from different sources since alsa
0.12 I think, so I have all the benefits I need without pulseaudio.

[Bug 220513] [NEW] totem-xine crashes when switching to youtube from dvd

2008-04-21 Thread warjowuch
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: totem-xine

I was playing a dvd, when I decided to watch a youtube-video with the beautiful
youtube-plugin. So I searched, while dvd-playback was still active.
Then I double clicked on a youtube-video (dvd still playing) and my system
froze. I couldn't get to a terminal, restart X by pressing cntrl-alt-backspace.
Quite a crash.

Also, I experienced more crashes when using the youtube-plugin in totem-
xine, but they where less severe. THey appeared when only opening totem
-> searching youtube -> double clicking a video.

Maybe these bugs have something to do with the fact that they appeared
the first boot after upgrading from 7.10 to 8.04 RC. The system seemed
more stable after another reboot. But I can't imagine why, so I still
decided to file this bugreport.

because I could use recovery mode to login as root and delete the driver again
that my system survived, as gutsy started crashing on boot due to the Creative
driver.
Just go with the OSS driver for now...

[Bug 220510] [NEW] X fails to use GEODE and reverts to VESA on a host without any xorg.conf

2008-04-21 Thread Martin-Éric Racine
Public bug reported:

In its current form, X fails to match Geode LX hardware with the
corresponding "geode" X driver, instead reverting to the "vesa" driver,
on hosts launching without any xorg.conf, or whose xorg.conf omits the
Driver statement in the Device section.

This has been verified on various Geode LX -based hardware featuring
BIOS from a variety of vendors.

Suspicion is that patching hw/xfree86/common/xf86AutoConfig.c to add the
PCI ID for Geode LX would fix this. A patch is attached towards this
effect.

[Bug 220507] [NEW] Firefox owned by a bad joke.

2008-04-21 Thread Turbo
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: firefox

Recently I received one of those... jokes, that makes the way through
Internet.

It's a a very simple link wich arranges the code in such a way that you loose
control of the affected tab and Firefox.
I mean, there is NOTHING you can do about it, except close Firefox in the hard
way. If you have several tabs you
will have to reopen Firefox and faster than light, close the offending tab
before it finish loading.

In this case it's all about a bad joke but I was thinking what else can be done
if someone does a similar "job"
with a darker purpose. What I mean is: It's not acceptable that a web page, no
matter the contents, takes full
control of a given Tab, I tried with Opera and, after several seconds
"digesting" the link, it successfully allowed
to close the Tab, so it can be fixed in Firefox too. ;-) ;-)

Here goes the link, PLEASE, remember, it won't allow you to close the Tab or
regain control of Firefox in no way,
not even pressing the keyboards shortcuts or clicking the menus. Changing the
options for Javascript do not help
either. Also, I tried with beta 4, the new version of Firefox included in
Ubuntu 8.04 and it's affected too.

I beg you all excuse me for the link's content (XXX), I'm doing this just for
the sole purpose of improving the already
great quality of Firefox

WARNING, EXPLICIT CONTENT INSIDE.

Turbo.

[Bug 220505] [NEW] Ungrammatical "A upgrade" should be "An upgrade"

2008-04-21 Thread Steve Langasek
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: update-manager

So, the diff for update-manager 0.87.24 includes this fix:

 #: ../DistUpgrade/DistUpgradeController.py:308
-#, fuzzy, python-format
+#, python-format
msgid "A upgrade from '%s' to '%s' is not supported with this tool."
-msgstr "An upgrade from \"%s\" to \"%s\" is not supoprted with this tool."
+msgstr "An upgrade from \"%s\" to \"%s\" is not supported with this tool."

Which is great, except this only corrects the string for en_GB - the source
string still says "A upgrade", which is what will be shown in the en_US locale,
and is incorrect! The source string should also be corrected to "An upgrade".

[Bug 220504] [NEW] Firefox doesn't know what apps to use to open any type of downloaded files

2008-04-21 Thread Catapult
Public bug reported:

When I download files with firefox 3 (currently using beta 5), firefox 3
doesn't seem to be "listening" to the computer to learn the default
file-opener for any file type. Outside of firefox, there are default
file-viewers for the different file-types. Double-clicking a file
_outside_ of firefox opens up an appropriate program to access the file.

This problem is with all filetypes: mp3, doc, pdf, etc. All in firefox.

[Bug 220500] [NEW] Intel Q35/82566DM network connection is disabled on reboot

2008-04-21 Thread Veichtlbauer
Public bug reported:

Working on a machine with Intel Q35 Express Chipset Family, the 82566DM
gigabit network connection is disabled/non-functional on reboot of
ubuntu. Resetting the IP address or subnet mask via the network manager
or ifconfig re-enables the connection. Until this is done, you get
"destination not reachable" errors en masse.

This is a major showstopper, since likewise-open will fail to
authenticate against LDAP/Active Directory when the network connection
is broken, thus rendering the whole machine rather useless for the user.

[Bug 220501] [NEW] [hardy] computer hard locks with flashing keyboard lights

Public bug reported:

I'm using the latest version of hardy, and at seemingly random times, my
computer has hard locked twice (once while i was watching youtube, the
other while i was away at school and i come back to find it frozen)

I tried to ctrl+alt+backspace to restart the GUI but that didnt do
anything

I even tried alt+sysrq+REISUB and that did nothing either

However,i did notice each time the computer hard locked like this, the
keyboard LEDs for Caps lock and Scroll lock were flashing. Does this
mean something?

[Bug 220497] [NEW] network-manager doesn't handle ppp connections.

2008-04-21 Thread alef13
Public bug reported:

Hi.

I think that there's little confusion while talking about bugs in firefox,
evolution and pidgin regarding the "offline mode".
After reading tons of posts related to such bugs, I decided to open this new
ticket and post my point of view, trying to clarify what's happening, and why.
Some of the bugs are:
#191889
#116696
#147119
#177763
#212710
#220007

Also, there's a post from Dan William about these problems of network-manager
not handling your connection (especially on Ubuntu):
http://blogs.gnome.org/dcbw/category/networkmanager/

Actually, network-manager can be considered a good thing. Not only because it's
integrated with standardized applications such as freedesktop's dbus and hal,
but it's also a way to make third-part applications (such as firefox, evolution
and pidgin) know the network status no matter what distro you use.
According to the Network Manager website,
www.gnome.org/projects/NetworkManager, it helps on application integration -
few years ago I was totally against it, but now I understand that it's really
needed in order to make distros and programs as much compatible as possible.

The fact is that NM < 0.7 doesn't handle any kind of connection - at least on
gutsy, it doesn't handle, for instance, ppp connections. I'm currently using
ppp connection for my hsdpa, and, as my provider doesn't require APN, I'm using
NM's manual configuration. I start and stop the connection through the "Dial Up
Connections" on the applet. It makes no difference from using the applet or
wvdial, it completely ignores the ppp connection, and, because of that, I
cannot use NM to start any of my PPTP VPNs.
Well, I know the workaround by setting DHCP or static IP addres, but that's not
what I want - and most of us.

Also, many programmers are just following a standard (thanks god) when
they set the "offline mode" in their application, according to dbus
messages. It cannot be considered a "firefox bug", or "pidgin bug".
Instead, we should really thank that our system is getting as much
standardized as possible.

So, I would like to say that if hardy isn't going to be shipped with NM 0.7,
you should consider using older versions (no!) of programs that doesn't depend
on dbus messages, or else provide us a way (with another patch to NM) to set
the network status by hand, no matter what kind of connection we're using.
I believe that without such feature, it's going to be a disaster.

[Bug 220495] [NEW] Time Zone formating Error

2008-04-21 Thread The Net Duck
Public bug reported:

This is in Hardy Heron Beta. I am using an Nvidia New graphics driver. I
also have a 1440 X 900 50hz .

Here is the problem, when I click on my time (it's the thing in the
panel that displays the time and date) everything works out fine. I was
able to ad IST to my time zone (very helpful for business meetings via
America to india) just fine. However, now when I click on my time,
formating is ok until my mouse scrolls over the IST time, then it get
wide and moves off the screen.

I have compiz running. but have tested this without it running and get
the same results. Formatting is off. Attached is a screenshot of the
problem. Please note that after I click on the clock then scroll over
the IST, the formating is off, but when I click on the time again (the
time in the panel) the formatting reverts back to normal.

Thanks

The Net Duck

[Bug 214119] Re: [HARDY] Koolu W.E. (ION A603) does not detect higher resolution than 800x600

2008-04-21 Thread Martin-Éric Racine
So, we've at least verified with two vendors utilizing an ION 603
variant (with an Award BIOS) that the libDDC patch accomplishes what we
intended: to bypass reliance on BIOS environment to get correct DDC
information.

We've also verified that the same works and introduces no regression on
unrelated hardware running another vendor's BIOS (General Software),
this time a DBE61 (which also happens to be a Linutop-1).

Given this, would an immediate GEODE 2.8.1 release sound like a
reasonable path to resolve at least part of this bug (detection of
resolutions larger than 800x600 on an ION 603)? Jordan? Would there be
any chance of getting such a 2.8.1 into Hardy as a bug fixing release?
Steve?

This of course leaves open the issue of getting X to use GEODE on Geode-
based hardware, rather than revert to VESA. This should be the title of
a separate bug, entitled "X fails to detect Geode LX hardware and to use
the GEODE driver on a host without xorg.conf".

Well I tested this on my machine here and I still see the problem, though
with notsc it seems less frequent. I'm concerned that may be wishful
thinking on my part. I have noticed a new behavior where the install
red-screen fails during the "selecting and installing packages" bit towards
the end of the install. I get a stall like before, but this time when I hit
a key to continue, rather than carrying it, it drops me out to the red
screen. Even if I go go back a few steps in the install process, it keeps
giving me a red screen "A installation step has failed" or the like. I need
to do some more testing and see if I can get it to reliably correlate to
something I'm changing, but as you pointed out, it's getting late here
too...

[Bug 185906] Re: update-manager-core requires 0.81 but it is not installed

2008-04-21 Thread lall
"What version of ubuntu do you use? What happens if you run:
$ sudo dpkg --configure -a
$ sudo apt-get install -f
$ sudo apt-get install --reinstall update-manager-core
?"

Thanks,
 MIchael

Well, this lost my update manager completely. I'm using Ubuntu 8.04 with kernel
2.6.25.
Before the "reinstallation" of the update-manager i had a problem with updating
update-manager-core. I just couldn't update it.
So i tried the solution above..
And if I try to install update-manager again it says:

update-manager is not available, but is referred to by another package.
This may mean that the package is missing, has been obsoleted, or
is only available from another source
However the following packages replace it:
  update-manager-core software-properties-gtk
E: Package update-manager has no installation candidate

I'm confused, any ideas?

[Bug 220492] [NEW] Stand by in Ubuntu

2008-04-21 Thread iahim
Public bug reported:

Stand by never worked in Ubuntu, regardless which edition (for ex. never worked
in Ubuntu / Xubuntu Feisty, Gutsy nor Hardy).
When issuing Stand by command the system does not shutdown properly - HDD is
still working, all LEDs are ON, CPU fan is still ON. After that I cannot power
it ON again, it freezes. I must press for about 10 seconds the Power button to
force shutdown before I can use the notebook again. However Stand by works in
Windows XP - means the hardware should be OK.
Hardware: Toshiba satellite Pro 6000, Celeron 1066 MHz, 384M RAM, HDD 80G
Samsung.

[Bug 216575] Re: 2.6.24-16-generic will not boot

2008-04-21 Thread Cresho
the 2.6.24.12 kernel or what ever was the last kernel I been using. I
have a alpha cd that I use and dont bother loading the new kernel. It
is the last kernel I use on my pc but I cannot understand why I need to
have 2 pci cards instead of 3 out of 4 in my system to allow linux to
boot.

[Bug 216575] Re: 2.6.24-16-generic will not boot

2008-04-21 Thread Cresho
I kinda narrowed it down. It seems as if I ( i have 4pci slots) remove
one of the three pci cards either my kworld high definition tuner,
avermedia stereo, or my audigy, it boots up fine. Even trying to force
pci and irq in bios does not allow ubuntu to boot. I recently
downloaded the release candidate and the live cd will not boot unless i
remove one pci device. if I leave all pci devices, it pauses and boots
and gives me a HAL error.
