[Bug 83715] Re: local loopback interface isn't brought up on boot
Running 8.04 RC Hardy Heron, experiencing a similar problem. Upgraded a few days ago from 7.10, and in 7.10 I could not print reliably in evince (ended up assuming it was a buggy app and installing acroread instead), and I would get a ~3 minute delay on login. The same annoying ~3 minute delay persisted in 8.04 RC, and furthermore I would often get a gnome session error on login. By good luck I came across this bug (after many unsuccessful attempts to google for similar problem reports). From the comments here, I then tried pinging localhost, and got no answer, and "ifconfig" showed no loopback interface. The solution was very simple - just add these 3 lines to /etc/network/interfaces : # The loopback network interface auto lo iface lo inet loopback ... and I rebooted and now logging in is fast and quick. Yay! I have no idea where the loopback interface lines went to from the interfaces file. Maybe some bit of software deleted it? Maybe I deleted it? Seems a bit unlikely to me though, as I have no recollection of doing that. -- local loopback interface isn't brought up on boot https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/83715 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 194678] Re: LTS-to-LTS upgrade failed on python
I was trying to perform a desktop LTS - to - desktop LTS upgrade and ended up with what looked like a depedency hell. In other words, a window popped up and explained in (some form of) French that dependencies could not be resolved, the upgrade failed and my system reverted back to Dapper. I tried a second time, same result. In both cases, the command line looked like this: $ gksu "update-manager -d" warnings.warn("apt API not stable yet", FutureWarning) extracting '/tmp/tmpZg150V/hardy.tar.gz' authenticate '/tmp/tmpZg150V/hardy.tar.gz' against '/tmp/tmpZg150V/hardy.tar.gz.gpg' WARNING: Failed to read mirror file WARNING: Failed to read mirror file I meant to get a screen capture in order to get the full message in English, so I tried this, but then it worked: $ export LANG=C $ gksu "update-manager -d" warnings.warn("apt API not stable yet", FutureWarning) extracting '/tmp/tmpo5KXdQ/hardy.tar.gz' authenticate '/tmp/tmpo5KXdQ/hardy.tar.gz' against '/tmp/tmpo5KXdQ/hardy.tar.gz.gpg' WARNING: Failed to read mirror file WARNING: Failed to read mirror file Then pop-up message gave three "reasons" for failure (all revolving around unsupported packages, which does not really make much sense in my case). Anyway, here is my /var/log/dist-upgrade, sorry I do not have files showing the failure. I would suspect that my problem is related with calculating depencies failing when the locale is not "C". ** Attachment added: "apt.log" http://launchpadlibrarian.net/13780512/apt.log -- LTS-to-LTS upgrade failed on python https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/194678 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 220510] [NEW] X fails to use GEODE and reverts to VESA on a host without any xorg.conf
Public bug reported: In its current form, X fails to match Geode LX hardware with the corresponding "geode" X driver, instead reverting to the "vesa" driver, on hosts launching without any xorg.conf, or whose xorg.conf omits the Driver statement in the Device section. This has been verified on various Geode LX -based hardware featuring BIOS from a variety of vendors. Suspicion is that patching hw/xfree86/common/xf86AutoConfig.c to add the PCI ID for Geode LX would fix this. A patch is attached towards this effect. ** Affects: xorg-server (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- X fails to use GEODE and reverts to VESA on a host without any xorg.conf https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/220510 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 220507] [NEW] Firefox owned by a bad joke.
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: firefox Recently I received one of those... jokes, that makes the way through Internet. It's a a very simple link wich arranges the code in such a way that you loose control of the affected tab and Firefox. I mean, there is NOTHING you can do about it, except close Firefox in the hard way. If you have several tabs you will have to reopen Firefox and faster than light, close the offending tab before it finish loading. In this case it's all about a bad joke but I was thinking what else can be done if someone does a similar "job" with a darker purpose. What I mean is: It's not acceptable that a web page, no matter the contents, takes full control of a given Tab, I tried with Opera and, after several seconds "digesting" the link, it successfully allowed to close the Tab, so it can be fixed in Firefox too. ;-) ;-) Here goes the link, PLEASE, remember, it won't allow you to close the Tab or regain control of Firefox in no way, not even pressing the keyboards shortcuts or clicking the menus. Changing the options for Javascript do not help either. Also, I tried with beta 4, the new version of Firefox included in Ubuntu 8.04 and it's affected too. I beg you all excuse me for the link's content (XXX), I'm doing this just for the sole purpose of improving the already great quality of Firefox WARNING, EXPLICIT CONTENT INSIDE. http://plastike.darkcheats.org/owned/ Best Regards, Turbo. [Bug 220497] [NEW] network-manager doesn't handle ppp connections.
Public bug reported: Hi. I think that there's little confusion while talking about bugs in firefox, evolution and pidgin regarding the "offline mode". After reading tons of posts related to such bugs, I decided to open this new ticket and post my point of view, trying to clarify what's happening, and why. Some of the bugs are: #191889 #116696 #147119 #177763 #212710 #220007 Also, there's a post from Dan William about these problems of network-manager not handling your connection (especially on Ubuntu): http://blogs.gnome.org/dcbw/category/networkmanager/ Actually, network-manager can be considered a good thing. Not only because it's integrated with standardized applications such as freedesktop's dbus and hal, but it's also a way to make third-part applications (such as firefox, evolution and pidgin) know the network status no matter what distro you use. According to the Network Manager website, www.gnome.org/projects/NetworkManager, it helps on application integration - few years ago I was totally against it, but now I understand that it's really needed in order to make distros and programs as much compatible as possible. The fact is that NM < 0.7 doesn't handle any kind of connection - at least on gutsy, it doesn't handle, for instance, ppp connections. I'm currently using ppp connection for my hsdpa, and, as my provider doesn't require APN, I'm using NM's manual configuration. I start and stop the connection through the "Dial Up Connections" on the applet. It makes no difference from using the applet or wvdial, it completely ignores the ppp connection, and, because of that, I cannot use NM to start any of my PPTP VPNs. Well, I know the workaround by setting DHCP or static IP addres, but that's not what I want - and most of us. Also, many programmers are just following a standard (thanks god) when they set the "offline mode" in their application, according to dbus messages. It cannot be considered a "firefox bug", or "pidgin bug". Instead, we should really thank that our system is getting as much standardized as possible. So, I would like to say that if hardy isn't going to be shipped with NM 0.7, you should consider using older versions (no!) of programs that doesn't depend on dbus messages, or else provide us a way (with another patch to NM) to set the network status by hand, no matter what kind of connection we're using. I believe that without such feature, it's going to be a disaster. ** Affects: ubuntu Importance: Undecided Status: New ** Tags: evolution firefox manager network pidgin ppp -- network-manager doesn't handle ppp connections. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/220497 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 220495] [NEW] Time Zone formating Error
Public bug reported: This is in Hardy Heron Beta. I am using an Nvidia New graphics driver. I also have a 1440 X 900 50hz . Here is the problem, when I click on my time (it's the thing in the panel that displays the time and date) everything works out fine. I was able to ad IST to my time zone (very helpful for business meetings via America to india) just fine. However, now when I click on my time, formating is ok until my mouse scrolls over the IST time, then it get wide and moves off the screen. I have compiz running. but have tested this without it running and get the same results. Formatting is off. Attached is a screenshot of the problem. Please note that after I click on the clock then scroll over the IST, the formating is off, but when I click on the time again (the time in the panel) the formatting reverts back to normal. [Bug 214119] Re: [HARDY] Koolu W.E. (ION A603) does not detect higher resolution than 800x600
So, we've at least verified with two vendors utilizing an ION 603 variant (with an Award BIOS) that the libDDC patch accomplishes what we intended: to bypass reliance on BIOS environment to get correct DDC information. We've also verified that the same works and introduces no regression on unrelated hardware running another vendor's BIOS (General Software), this time a DBE61 (which also happens to be a Linutop-1). Given this, would an immediate GEODE 2.8.1 release sound like a reasonable path to resolve at least part of this bug (detection of resolutions larger than 800x600 on an ION 603)? Jordan? Would there be any chance of getting such a 2.8.1 into Hardy as a bug fixing release? Steve? This of course leaves open the issue of getting X to use GEODE on Geode- based hardware, rather than revert to VESA. This should be the title of a separate bug, entitled "X fails to detect Geode LX hardware and to use the GEODE driver on a host without xorg.conf". -- [HARDY] Koolu W.E.
