We'd be grateful if you would then provide a more complete description of the problem. We have instructions on debugging some types of problems at [WWW] http://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingProcedures At a minimum, we need: 1. the specific steps or actions you took that caused you to encounter the problem, 2. the behavior you expected, and 3. the behavior you actually encountered (in as much detail as possible). [Bug 249773] [NEW] [needs-packaging] Positron - Multitrack Video Editor
Public bug reported: URL: http://positron.sourceforge.net/about.html Description: Positron is a capable Non-Linear Editor that any high-end user can afford. The response from the community was overwhelming - not only did they wholeheartedly encourage the project, they also willingly gave ideas and volunteered their help. Robert Holcomb and Michael Thorn quickly joined the project as developer and webmaster, followed shortly by Daniel Cook and Paul Unterweiser. Martin Wacker joined in late July as another developer. Since then, the project has taken off and is looking forward to many exciting developments in the future! Positron is geared towards replacing software such as Avid®, Apple's Final Cut Pro®, and Discreet's Flame®. It is engineered to meet the needs of professional editors working in studios with high-end equipment, but does not exclude home video makers using their own machines. Positron should just run more slowly, but will still be stable. [Bug 249203] Re: Segfault on XvMC + SMP (if two or more cores are enabled)
Well after much finagling I was able to get a fresh Gentoo 2008.0 install onto my disk alongside Ubuntu. Using the nVidia driver supplied by the repository (same version as in Ubuntu), along with my custom kernel and the v4l-dvb repository. I was able to get around the audio write errors above by explicitly setting my audio device in Mythtv to /dev/dsp and making sure KDE/aRTS was set to release the sound card after a few seconds. Same setting on both distros. However, the stream of prebuffering pause messages still persists only under Ubuntu - the Gentoo side seemed more or less devoid of these messages and the video was as smooth as I normally expected it to be. Any amount of activity (such as a window gaining or losing focus) here on the Ubuntu side will set off a stream of those messages, the video and audio still get a little choppy, and if it gets too severe, mythfrontend segfaults. I might be able to avoid this by enabling realtime priority, but the last time I did that, it caused a hard lock. It seems that the XvMC multi-core crash exists on Gentoo as well (odd, I could have sworn I used it before). I guess that technically makes this bug report invalid. -- Segfault on XvMC + SMP (if two or more cores are enabled) https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/249203 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 91237] Re: java library not found
I've been able to duplicate and then solve this here, under Ubuntu 8.04 (on x86). The issue causing mild confusion about this bug is that the current package works fine using the default (java-gcj) JRE. However, if one installs the Sun JRE and sets it as the default using sudo update-java-alternatives -s java-6-sun *then* the symptoms of this bug appear. Adding the extra library directory /usr/bin/jni is harmless to the java- gcj JRE. The solution now seems clear: add that directory to the library path in the launch script. Therefore, I have created a fixed package of iriverter, the .debdiff of which is attached. I'll do my best to see this through to a new revision upload in the next few days. There are a few packaging and lintian warnings I'll probably clean up while I am inside the iriverter package tree, too. Feedback is very welcome -- I'm new to Ubuntu development, though not to Linux or to software development. Thank you for following through with this. I am changing the package from xserver-xorg-driver-ati to xorg because of the autodetect problem. [Bug 214810] Re: Kernel Panic due to null pointer dereference in do_add_mount()
Hi Chad, Just to clarify, the original patch I built with was a fix that I saw a discussion on from the Linux Kernel Mailing List Archive; subsequently a tidied up version of the patch made it into the autofs git repo which I referred to in https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/214810/comments/26 above - however this patch won't apply cleanly and needs a little effort to be back-ported. I have discussed this with Ian Kent the maintainer and he has told me that there are a few more patches pending that will be coming soon, so am waiting to see what changes in the next week or so to see if any more relevant commits come into fix this specific issue. I'm having the same issue. I'm running a clean install of Hardy (Kubuntu 8.04) so, my system jumped the 2.6.24-18 kernel update. I don't agree, the bug cannot be closed. First, you updated the package amule-utils-gui to 2.2.1. From where? Synaptic tells me that the latest version is 2.2.0~svn20080218-0ubuntu4. What I asked to the package maintainer is to update to a 'non-svn' version. Second, you had to update the server too! I dont want to do this. In fact, I don't know if it will be possible. [Bug 249328] Re: Unhelpful SQUASHFS error messages
The disk probably had some problem. It was burned by a collegue at work, but I did not check it (though I should have). He burned it at a slow speed. I still don't rule out a DVD reader issue, however. The messages appeared during 2 of my 5 installation attempts. Each time during the file to disk copying step. At 2 different percentage of the step (hinting strongly at some cd pb). As for the error messages, what I suggest is just to make them more readable. As is, with such kind of messages, if you are not very computer-savvy, you will be afraid you broke something or think it does not work and drop Ubuntu (which is bad, especially when the problem is just a bad cd). I think that a minor change in those messages will make a _huge_ difference. If you search for the phrase 'SQUASHFS error, you will see numerous questions about it. This illustrates that the messages are not explicit enough. I think that this is especially important when the problem occurs during the installation. Since Ubuntu is usually not preinstalled, the install step is critical, especially when you can't access to internet because you are in the middle of the installation... Another issue that I did not raise in my initial report is: would it be possible for the installer itself to handle such problems? When some component encounters an issue and stalls or fails, it would be nice to have the installer itself stop and give you a retry/abort option. For this component I'm afraid it would not be that easy however (you can't just set up a timer on this kind of operation). Thanks for the package change. [Bug 246608] Re: USB ports unreliable
Yes I have, and to elaborate further, when I initially installed ubuntu, I immediately attached an external 500 GB drive to one of the front USB ports and it worked fine for quite a while (weeks), at some point later I turned off my system and disconnected the external drive for a day or two, and later rebooted and used the system without the external drive connected. At some point I needed to copy some files off to the external drive and reconnected it to the same USB port as used previously and encountered problems copying a large number of files to it, as described in the original post. I tried cleaning the USB socket, using the 2nd socket, both of which failed, and eventually I found one of the rear 2 sockets to work reliably, and I continue to use it currently. I also have WinXP on the same computer and booting it allows me to use any USB socket reliably with a USB 2.0 device. I have rebooted ubuntu several times and can no longer use any of the other 3 USB ports reliably with it running, except I find I can often copy small files to a memory stick with no problem, but not large files which are slightly over 1 GB. They appear to copy about 3/4 complete, but are less than 1/4 complete on the memory stick. lspci show the following: 00:00.0 Host bridge: VIA Technologies, Inc. VT8378 [KM400/A] Chipset Host Bridge 00:01.0 PCI bridge: VIA Technologies, Inc. VT8237 PCI Bridge 00:10.0 USB Controller: VIA Technologies, Inc. VT82C586A/B/VT82C686/A/B/VT823x/A/C PIPC Bus Master IDE (rev 06) I have no idea if this is what it would have displayed when all was working well, and the manual for my motherboard shows specs for a VIA VT8235 South Bridge, containing an integrated USB 2.0 controller supporting 6 ports, although I only have connections for 4, the motherboard lacks pins where the additional 2 ports could be added. The manual states the motherboard provides two USB 2.0 pin headers, labeled JUSB2/3 that are compliant with Intel I/O connectivity Design Guide. JUSB2 is where the front 2 USB sockets are connected, and I've removed cleaned and reconnected the header. JUSB3 lacks pins on the motherboard. The only mention of USB 1.1 in the manual is in reference to USB 2.0 being 40 times faster. It would appear to me that something must have changed when the system was rebooted after the initial install as the problem only appeared after rebooting Ubuntu 7.04. I don't know where else to look for any info that might have relevance to this problem, and if there is something I can do or look at, such information would be greatly appreciated. -- USB ports unreliable https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/246608 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 249336] Re: [Heron] file not found failure during installation goes to live-session without warning
** Description changed: - I just installed Ubuntu 8.04.1 with a lot of pain (5 tries necessary). + (I think this topic is related to the Ubiquity project, but I'm not + sure) + + I just installed Ubuntu 8.04.1 (live cd) with a lot of pain (5 tries + necessary). Configuration: 1GB mem, 320GB SATA, AMD Athlon 1800XP, ATI9250 Please note that I successfully installed versions 6.10 7.04 (and various other distros) without errors on the same computer. (By live-session, I mean what you get by starting the install CD as a live CD, with the install icon, etc.) During the first installation attempt, I got an error message about some XML file missing at 81% (I think) of the installation process. Then the installer opened the live-session without any error message, giving the impression that in spite of the pb, the installation was finished. Since I had started the CD with the install option, and not the install icon from the live-session, I did not realize at first that the installation process had failed. It took me a few moments to notice the install icon that hinted that something had gone wrong. I think that a non experienced user would not have understood that the install had, in fact, failed. What I expected: 1) a single missing file should not have stopped the installation process. Given my installation problems, I guess that something must have been corrupted on the CDROM (though I managed to finish the install after several tries) but I was expecting the installer to ask if I wanted to retry/abort, I just got an short error message before the installer _silently_ aborted. 2) when the installer fails, it should say so in an obvious way. I mean with a clear and obvious message in a _big_ window. There were no messages at all to tell me that the installation process was stopped. 3) It would also have been nice if the installer had proposed to retry the whole step. Restarting from the beginning is really annoying. Thanks. -- [Heron] file not found failure during installation goes to live-session without warning https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/249336 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 249798] [NEW] [Wishlist] Gnome Panel Clock Appplet does not display seconds by default
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: gnome-panel The Gnome Panel Clock Appplet's default is just to display hours and minutes, e.g. as Windows XP does. I believe that the reason it was done that way in Windows was to hide the fact that it occasionally skips seconds as programs saturate the system resources; after enabling seconds with a 3rd-party product you could watch to see if the system was misbehaving (as usual ;) or if it was a full lock-up. In Ubuntu however I've not had the skipping problem (and on the rare occasion that something goes very wrong and the system becomes unresponsive, its a good diagnostic). So, as a wishlist item, please set the default to show the seconds. ** Affects: gnome-panel (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- [Wishlist] Gnome Panel Clock Appplet does not display seconds by default https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/249798 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
