After shutting down the next system start ended up with an "Error 18" in Grub. Source gem installs executable wrappers (essentially programmatic
symbolic links that select the correct gem executable) directly into
/usr/bin and stores gem libraries in the main ruby library area.
(/usr/lib/ruby/gems/1.8)
The way it deals with the version clash is that by default 'uninstall'
doesn't remove the executable wrapper.
That leads to the alternative bug of the program appearing to exist in
/usr/bin but but being unable to find the appropriate gem library
after you have done:
gem1.8 install
gem1.8 uninstall
So after a while your system ends up with a load of garbage wrappers
on the disk.

i want to mention this does not appear to be the same as an earlier bug in the list shown while i submitted this one - that user was merely getting text zoomed in a couple steps more than ideal, while i'm getting letters the size of planets, and within a second after seeing a mostly normal rendering. Also, zooming out alone does not restore normal appearance. Just done the upgrade from the 2.6.22-14 kernel and everything went fine, no hang at locales. Only little thing was kernel 2.6.22-15 got removed, so there's only the new 2.6.24-19 and old 2.6.22-14 kernel now. I just noticed this pattern, if you are on say, desktop 2 and you have a pidgin window open, then you minimize that window and go to another desktop and choose that window from the tasklist, it doesn't take you back to desktop 2 and "Un-minimize" that window, which was the old behavior in gutsy. It doesn't unminimize the window at all. If you rightclick the tasks panel in the taskbar, it still offers the option to "Un-Minimize" that window. No matter how many times you try, it doesn't show you that window and keeps the windows status as minimized. Keep in mind, "Restore to native workspace" is enabled. Does anyone else see this behavior? Starting PPP immediately. --> Unable to run /usr/sbin/pppd. --> Check permissions, or specify a "PPPD Path" option in wvdial.conf. So it needs more privileges to run the PPPD dialer. If I do a "groups matt" for my user that was created by the installer I get: groups matt matt adm dialout cdrom plugdev fuse lpadmin admin sambashare libvirtd vboxusers kvm Notice that the group "dip" is missing in Intrepid but is in Hardy, and previous releases. This means that if you go to "System > Administration > Users and Groups" and look at your user privileges. It will not have a check next to "Connect to Internet using a modem". Everything seems to be fine when your user is added to the "dip" group. Can you confirm this Gabriel? Anyway. You are right. This is not a bug in wvdial. It is just a change in the default accounts created by the Ubuntu installer. So whoever knows why this was changed should change it back, or have wvdial mention that you are not in the "dip" group. This change could potentially break other things.
