[Bug 217997] Re: Incorrect icons displayed for mimetypes installed in hicolor theme only
Firstly, what is the primary and most important reason to have icons at all? Options: 1. To look pretty? 2. To quickly convey meaningful information about a file's contents? I'd much rather have informative, ugly icons than pretty, meaningless ones. Secondly, reductio ad absurbam: suppose I install an icon theme which contains only one icon, a blank square, set with a mimetype association to all/allfiles. What would the correct behaviour be? Krzysztof seems to be arguing that every file icon should be replaced by that one, irrespective of actual mimetype. Finally, let's consider practicalities. It takes time to create icons, and artistic talent. Many projects are too small to attract much in the way of artist attention to create a full set of icons themselves for every distribution's pet icon theme, while at the same time being too small for the distributions to create icon sets on their behalf. Are they therefore doomed *never* to have their (fairly well drawn) icons appear, just because they can't provide icons for pet_icon_theme_of_the_month? -- Incorrect icons displayed for mimetypes installed in hicolor theme only https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/217997 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

Re: [Bug 255804] Re: When I change in a directory the name of a music-file I cann't import any new music-files in order to hear the tracks
Hallo, I need time to understand evolution. It works correct, but the time-field shows for past time the day, the month and the time and for the actual week the day and the time (Hour) and for the actual day the hour. I miss the possibility to design it in a second way, to show it day/month/year/hour without slashes, in order to sort it in both directions. I can live with the actual form, i missed the business-form in my eyes. Thanks for the dialog Best regards Peter Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. [Bug 277954] [NEW] Adjusting Dell backlight steals X keyboard focus and uses 100% CPU
Public bug reported: My problem is twofold. First, when I adjust my laptop screen's backlight (Fn+Up/Down), the 'hald-addon-dell-backlight' starts taking 100% CPU until I kill it. After killing it, subsequent adjustments to the backlight do not cause this, for obvious reasons. Secondly, every time I adjust the backlight, regardless of whether 'hald-addon-dell-backlight' is running, I lose keyboard focus in X. Alt+Tab and such things do still work, but there's no way to input text from the keyboard to any window. A workaround for this is to switch to a console (e.g. Ctrl+Alt+F1) and back to X again (Ctrl+Alt+F7), which restores the keyboard focus. ** Affects: hal (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- Adjusting Dell backlight steals X keyboard focus and uses 100% CPU https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/277954 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 277491] Re: totem hangs during video playback
well, again an unexpected behaviour of system... i'd like to describe in common, but i consider it a serious bug so plz help how to gather information about the issue. Issue aquired during video playback in totem (not only in fullscreen today), 2 Gb video file, but also happened with 250 mb video file. at first i restarted gnome with ctr+alt+backspase (to restart video driver due to some glitches). after about several minutes of video the memory (ram) consumption started (im using gnome-system-monitor: Установлен: 2.24.0-0ubuntu1) and in about 10 minutes consumption grew up to all available ram (3 gb). in system- monitor in process tab there was no process that use such much memory. the totem was about 90 mb, but the other process (lots of them) sonsumed much more memory than usually. killing totem process doesnt low memory consumption, its (consumption) fall back to normal after restrting with ctrl+alt+backspace after minute or two. -- totem hangs during video playback https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/277491 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

** Description changed: I'm using Intrepid 8.10 Beta. Installation was normal. On rebooting I could not boot in normal, recovery, or last good configuration. I used the alternate cd and ran the repair broken system. During boot it read some of the disk and managed to boot into a working system. Now when I reboot normally it stops when the bar is about 20% of the way across. When I boot in the recovery mode it stops when it gets to the intel wireless 3945 section and says it's disabled. I can still boot in the last good boot mode and everthing seems to work. I had this same problem in Alpha 6, but not in Alpha 5. Dell E1505, intel 3945 wireless, broadcom controller, ati x1400 Update I burned a new cd and reinstalled. Still could not boot on initial boot. Succeeded in booting by leaving alternate disk in cd tray. I used normal boot and it read something off the disk during boot and succeded in booting up. Now rebooting seems to be working without disk. Let me know if there are any files you would like to see. + + -Update2 + + After running all the updates after the install I now can only get the + system to boot if I boot off the disk, choose rescue mode, and then boot + normally. ** Description changed: I'm using Intrepid 8.10 Beta. [Bug 277948] [NEW] second screen under dual head lacks desktop
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: nautilus Using Intrepid with the open source ati driver, two screens, and compiz enabled results in nautilus only running on one screen. I configured dual head using the Monitor Resolution Settings program. After restarting X for a virtual screen size config write, I come back in to find that one desktop is not getting redrawn. So dragging a window across the broken desktop results in the window contents getting drawn across the desktop, for example. Otherwise the screen itself works fine: Panels can be moved on and they function fine. I can use all the programs I want on the screen, and move other ones on to it. Using "xprop | grep WM_CLASS" on the working desktop returns WM_CLASS(STRING) = "desktop_window", "Nautilus" while using it on the broken desktop returns nothing. It seems that nautilus is simply not running on the one screen. Yeah. inetd.conf, "udp"s should be "udp4"s or an IPV6 connection is being used I think. [Bug 277943] [NEW] No Error Messages when Server Uncontactable
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: picard Having tried Picard a few times and never scored a hit, I thought the fingerprinting algorithm must be rubbish. What I didn't know was that my queries were not reaching the MusicBrainz server. No error messages ever popped up and the "Log" window was perfectly blank. Occasionally the bottom status bar would flash up "No matching tracks for file xyz.mp3" for a few milliseconds... another miss! Failure to reach the server could be for any number of reasons:- - no MusicBrainz account - login details not entered into the options panel - typo' in login details - firewall, proxy or other network blockage - incorrect server address or address format - temporary MusicBrainz server outage. People who haven't used Picard before are unlikely to have accounts at MusicBrainz, so that's probably surprised quite a few newbies. :) A couple of error messages to cover these situations would really help. [Bug 277873] Re: Ubuntu Intrepid beta alternate CD cdromupgrade script fails due to extra '/'
Ahh... Okay I see the issue now. So the issue is coming about as the fullpath is expected after changing directories to a temporary location. I suppose these kinds of scripts are usually done by people who know what they are doing, but perhaps it might be useful to either a) detect that a relative path is being used and refuse to continue (clearly this won't work!) or even better would be b) convert the relative path to an absolute path... though this does make the script more complex. Even just a blanket warning (e.g. "this must be an absolute path") would be very informative and save this kind of error in future (hopefully). [Bug 232051] Re: talkd does not work
So, I pulled the source, commented out the sanity checks that force talkd to say "talkd[13554]: recvfrom: bogus address length". WIth this commented out it said "bogus address family". With *this* commented out, it logs lines such as "Oct 3 23:44:56 voltron talkd[15391]: ::a00:205:0:0 (0.0.0.0): unintelligible packet" There's the problem! That looks suspiciously like (part of) an IPV6 address -- I think it is not specifying the address type, is being given the IPv6 address, and is thoroughly not IPv6 compatible. I'm going to look into this, if not tonight then pretty soon. I'm assuming it'll be a 1-line patch to specify IPV4 only. (Well, 3 lines maybe if I patch the broken username in Bug 250971.) I think this will also fix 250975 (Ytalk hangs). [Bug 260733] Re: static IP address assignment does not work in Ibex Alpha 4
In attempting to troubleshoot this problem myself (I am the original filer of the bug), I uncovered an error in my earlier version of /etc/network/interfaces. It was missing a line "auto eth0" before the static configuration stanza. This, however, does not affect the principal problem reported in this bug, namely that Intrepid Ibex does not respect the static configuration at boot; rather it obtains its IP address from DHCP. I did a clean install of the beta to see if two mysterious problems would disappear. One did; this one did not. For what it's worth, exactly the same (corrected) /etc/network/interfaces works correctly in Hardy Heron. ** Attachment added: "interfaces" http://launchpadlibrarian.net/18204426/interfaces -- static IP address assignment does not work in Ibex Alpha 4 https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/260733 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
