Now I get: scanimage -L device `avision:libusb:002:003' is a Hewlett-Packard ScanJet 5300C flatbed scanner when I scan the lamp moves to the end of the scan area and then it stops. After a while starts flashing. Xsane is says error during read: Error during device I/O. Assuming that the normal user does belong to the scanner group (it may be checked by: cat /etc/group | grep scanner), it seems that the device node has not been created belonging to the scanner group. In one case, I have found that the problem lies in the file /etc/udev/rules.d/45-libsane.rules, which should be the responsible por properly setting the scanner device. I think that this file, included in the libsane downgraded package, uses an outdated way of detecting the devices. Near of the begining of the file there is a line that says as follows: SUBSYSTEM!=usb_device, GOTO=libsane_rules_end This line is designed for older udev versions than that present in Ubuntu Hardy. In hardy, it makes that the file is fully skipped and then the scanner device is not properly set. For me, it has worked simply to comment out this line by inserting a # symbol at the beginning of the line and the file is then processed and the device group is then properly set. (After modifying the file, you should restart the computer or perhaphs it just suffices with unplugging and plugging back the scanner). It seems to handle cronjobs, multiple console logins, and multiple ssh logins properly. I'd like to get one of our security guys to review this (jdstrand and/or kees), as well as one of our PAM guys (slangasek and/or pitti). I'll also try to get some feedback from the other ecryptfs upstream maintainers (mhalcrow and/or tyhicks). Note that the new code does **not** run within the setuid portion of the code, so it should be low risk from a security perspective. Public bug reported: I am using Kubuntu 8.10 with kde4 I've Install Kubuntu using the LiveCD but can not get to boot in to the os. When I start the PC, get to the grub menu and select the option to boot. The screen change to kubuntu screen then go's to text mode showing the following: Starting up ... Loading, Please Wait... Gave up waiting for root device. Common problem - Boot args (cat /prog/cmdline) - Check rootdelay= (did the system wait long enough?) - Check root= (did the system wait for right device) - Missing module (cat /proc/modules; ls /dev) ALERT! /dev/disk/by-uuid/3328a24e-ca23-4ce9-88cb-1c90e1588e5b does not exist. Dropping to shell! BusyBox v1.10.2 (Ubuntu 1:1.10.2-1ubuntu6) built-in shell (ash) Enter 'help' for a list of built-in commands. Aircard creates three USB serial ports when its driver gets loaded by the kernel. /dev/ttyUSB1 does not work with any of the AT commands at all (returns nothing) /dev/ttyUSB2 seems to work fully and gives the following output: AT OK AT+CGDCONT? +CGDCONT: 1,IP,ISP.CINGULAR,,0,0 +CGDCONT: 16,IP,isp.cingular,,0,0 OK AT+CGDCONT=? +CGDCONT: (1-16),IP,,,(0,1),(0,1) +CGDCONT: (1-16),PPP,,,(0,1),(0,1) it is possible to directly dial without (re)setting the AP ATD*99# CONNECT /dev/ttyUSB0 partially works: (local echo needs to be activated) AT OK AT+CGDCONT? Bryce: that would be nice, I've been busy with work the past few days and haven't been able to tackle it yet, so if you like to hack on it that would be fine :) The solution we could use is to modify matchDriverFromFiles() from hw/xfree86/common/xf86AutoConfig.c to use vesa if matches[0] is not set after the while loop. Shouldn't that work? Then videoPtrToDriverName() would place the autoconfigured driver to matches[1] and the server would still use vesa. Case closed, for now. The real solution, however, would be to modify xf86Init.c to use autoconfig() even if CONFIG_NOFILE is false, and add the logic to handle the existing Device-sections. Public bug reported: Binary package hint: openoffice.org When returning from hibernation, the Openoffice Impress becomes slow. One indication is that there is a delay of a few seconds when selecting a new slide from the Slide Pane. When I restart Openoffice, it again becomes responsive. I suspect very strongly that the same goes for other applications. I get a lot of interruptions while listening to Internet radio with VLC after returning from hibernation. If I restart the computer, then it works ok again. I'm running Ubuntu 8.04 with the latest updates as of today. The hardware is an AMD Phenom 4 core on an ASUS motherboard (I can provide details if necessary). Thanks!
