[Bug 264943] Re: gvfsd-smb crashed with SIGSEGV in strlen()

2008-12-15 Thread rossjenkins
Thierry and Kai:

Preliminary tests with the most recent patch (2:3.2.3-1ubuntu3.4~ppa3) of samba
shows the following:
Read access to my NAS works as expected in Nautilus and read access using
smclient in a terminal works. However, a put access (ie write access) using
smbclient still returns an ERRHD -39 error as seen in the message below.

r...@ubuntu-test:~$ smbclient //192.168.0.195/public
Enter ross's password:
Domain=[MSHOME] OS=[R] Server=[R]
smb: \ put /home/ross/Desktop/disk_layout.png disk_layout.png
Error writing file: ERRHRD - 39
putting file /home/ross/Desktop/disk_layout.png as \disk_layout.png Receiving
SMB: Server stopped responding
Call returned zero bytes (EOF) closing remote file \disk_layout.png
smb: \

Also, attempting a write access by dragging a file into the smb://
Nautilus window generates the disk full error message as seen in the
attachment. In other words, the latest patch has produced about the
same result as the 2:3.2.3-1ubuntu3.4~ppa2 patch.

What is common to both smbclient write access and Nautilus write access
during a write to a NAS device? Is there any other capture I can do that
might help to pinpoint that area? Any idea what ERRHRD -39 might point
towards?

So, in summary, with the latest patch, read access is OK, write access
is still FUBAR.

2008-12-15 Thread Hubert Farnsworth
Actually I had the same problem some days ago. Only that my root account
was hacked with only 400 attempts.

I used the alternate installation Cd of Ubuntu 8.10, but I was not asked
for a root password. Here's a piece of my log:

Dec 6 00:11:52 cfm sshd[7961]: Failed password for root from
 ...
Dec 6 00:35:23 cfm sshd[9034]: Accepted password for root from

I _did not_ set a root password after installation.

This seems like a reason for me to set PermitRootLogin to no in the
distributed binary package!

[Bug 264943] Re: gvfsd-smb crashed with SIGSEGV in strlen()

2008-12-15 Thread Kai Blin
Hm, our initial guess is that these NAS disks all run the same CIFS
server, which doesn't handle what our smbclient is sending and dies,
giving back a disk full error. It should be unrelated to the segfault
this bug is about, though. I'm still trying to contact the person who
initially added that OS/2 offset check my patch changes, just to make
sure I don't break smbclient for OS/2. Once that's sorted out, I can
push a patch for this issue. I think it would make sense to track the
write error in a separate bug report, as I'm not totally convinced it's
a Samba bug at all. :)

[Bug 308308] [NEW] router does not recognize the hostname

2008-12-15 Thread Martijn
Public bug reported:

The router does not recognize the hostname of dhcp client.
The hostname command gives me the correct hostname.

I have to change the following in /etc/dhcp3/dhclient.conf: send host-name
hostname;
must be changed into: send host-name my hostname;
Everything works fine then, the router gets the correct hostname from the dhcp
client.
A lot of users share the same issues when using the routers DHCP-server
functionality.
Is there a way to correct this in future releases?

[Bug 264943] Re: gvfsd-smb crashed with SIGSEGV in strlen()

2008-12-15 Thread rossjenkins
Tomek's results are interesting, I will have to see if I get the same
effect.

I tried something a little different. I uninstalled all the Samba
packages except for libsmbclient and libwbclient0. Removal of either of
these packages would also result in the removal of 17-20 other packages
on my system, including Nautilus, that depend on these libraries so they
have to be left in place.

After removing all the Samba packages I could I tried to write to the
NAS from Nautilus by dragging and dropping a file and I got the same
error as before about the disk being full (see my previous message). Of
course, since I had uninstalled smbclient, I couldn't run a test from a
terminal. My hunch is that the root of the problem is in either the
libsmbclient or libwbclient0 libraries. I might try to do a dpkg -i
force-downgrade for the whole Samba suite to the Hardy version packages
just to see what happens (my guess is that it will break something so
I'll have to set up an experimental system to play on).

In any event, I will reinstall the Samba packages and see if I can
replicate Tomek's results.

2008-12-15 Thread rossjenkins
OK. I repeated Tomek's smbclient tests and got the same results as he did. I
also noticed as Tomek did that
smb: \ ls *.txt list all files, as does smb: \ ls *.* and smb: \ ls * and
smb : \ ls

In other words it seems that if the * character is the first one after
the smb ls (list) command, it produces the same result as an ls
command with no parameters. Is this normal parsing behaviour for
smbclient? I will have to test this out on my Hardy system.

[Bug 294277] Re: Tomcat 6 missing directory Catalina in /etc/tomcat6 - so impossible to deploy webapp

2008-12-15 Thread Thierry Carrez
No, you understand it right, the bug is also about /etc/tomcat6/Catalina
and /etc/tomcat6/Catalina/localhost not being created (empty) by tomcat6
but only by the tomcat6 webapps, so if you don't install any webapp,
then you can't use autodeploy.

However, the debdiff does create /etc/tomcat6/Catalina/localhost (in
tomcat6.dirs) which results in the creation of both
/etc/tomcat6/Catalina and /etc/tomcat6/Catalina/localhost ?

[Bug 303770] Re: Brasero DELETES all files (not folders)

2008-12-15 Thread Mattias Örtenblad
Oh my god!

Now brasero has deleted my files twice! Of course I thought I did
something wrong the first time, but the second try also made my files
disappear ON MY HARD DRIVE.

(Also, when brasero is checking port, it's always closed, even if I
forwarded it. This worked earlier.)

[Bug 211533] Re: Could not start a Firefox session in background; windows pop up on desktop instead

2008-12-15 Thread Jarno Suni
Alexander Sack, I tested again opening a Firefox session that has many
windows in ubuntu 8.10, but no success this time. It is slightly
different installation now: Originally xubuntu 8.10, but I installed
later sudo apt-get install --no-install-recommends ubuntu-desktop.
The session by which I tested is different, too. I wonder what more I
have to install and/or configure to enable opening in background in
Gnome?

I was able to ssh and kill wine.
System returned to normal.

So it is the same bug as the wine one from pauli.

But, exactly the same freeze happens on all graphic cards (intel, ati,
nvidia), so it must by kernel/mesa based bug.

I'm availiable for testing.
Just write what to do, and I'll freeze my system as necessary :)

[Bug 277752] Re: Please sync setools 3.3.5.ds-3 (universe) from Debian unstable (main).

2008-12-15 Thread Jonathan Marsden
While I am glad this issue has been fixed back in October, rmadison
setools shows:

   setools | 3.3.4.ds-4 | intrepid/universe | amd64
   setools | 3.3.5.ds-3 | intrepid/universe | source, i386
   setools | 3.3.5.ds-5 | jaunty/universe | source, amd64, i386

So it seems there is a build problem in Intrepid under amd64? Surely
setools should not take two months to build?!

I will try to build setools 3.3.5.ds-3 on Intrepid myself, but I can't
help feeling this should not be necessary.

[Bug 258899] Re: Flash videos on sites such as The Daily Show stopped working

All mtvnservices.com videos fail (only a grey box shows up, no video no

also works intermittently. Most other Flash sites work consistently.

When I checked network.http.sendRefererHeader it was already set to 2.

[Bug 269191] Re: [Wish][Intrepid]Please in clude Kdenlive 0.7 for kde4 in the repo´s

2008-12-15 Thread Shaved Wookie
Hail to the King, Baby!

Hey Didier, FYI, and at the risk of getting lynched by other impatient
users wanting Kdenlive 0.7, I'm wondering if it's worth holding off
jst a little given that Kdenlive 0.7.1 is due to come out in only 10
days.

They've added a number of new features such as the spacer tool, improved
screen capture and a substantial number of bugfixes. I'm not sure this
is any harder than packaging 0.7 or not, and obviously *any* 0.7.x
version is better than none, but if we may not see an updated package
after this for a while, and it *isn't* any harder, it would be nice to
have people using the most stable version possible.

[Bug 211533] Re: Could not start a Firefox session in background; windows pop up on desktop instead

2008-12-15 Thread Jarno Suni
** Description changed:

  Binary package hint: firefox

A Firefox session is opened automatically when you start Firefox, if you
have chosen show windows and tabs from last time in Startup
preferences. Furthermore, if you do not close Firefox 3 explicitly
before logging out, the saved session will be opened automatically after
logging in next time. A Firefox session can contain a lot of windows
that are opened on top of each other on the desktop and you can not use
your computer while windows keep popping up.

I would like to get Firefox opened in background so that I can use my
computer while Firefox is starting up. I can do so in Mandriva 2008
  spring / Gnome / Firefox 2; (I didn't test in Ubuntu Gnome): I could
continue working in terminal while Firefox is starting; Firefox does not
steal focus or pop up, if you click or type in e.g. a terminal window
after you have started Firefox startup. I would expect similar behavior
in Xfce / Xubuntu / Firefox (and other applications).

I can not start Firefox minimized by command kstart --iconify firefox
, either. Even if I could, I am not sure, if this would open the
session minimized, when Firefox starts automatically after logging in.
(I can start e.g. OpenOffice.org iconified to the Task List by
- respective kstart command, see Bug #20767 for details.)
+ respective kstart command in Xubuntu 8.04, but not in 8.10, see Bug
+ #20767 for details.)

  I am using Xubuntu 8.04 Firefox 3.

[Bug 276324] Re: update of python-gtkhtml2 in hardy-updates breaks

2008-12-15 Thread Rolf Leggewie
Apparently, most people have that directory on their system
automatically. I wonder why I did not. Maybe it is because I don't
install recommended packages automatically?

/usr/share/python-support/python-gtkhtml2 is not in
http://packages.ubuntu.com/hardy/i386/python-gnome2-extras/filelist nor
in http://packages.ubuntu.com/hardy-updates/i386/python-
gtkhtml2/filelist I don't have time right now to dig further into where
it is supposed to come from. Maybe somebody can comment? That
particular directory exists but is empty on my system. I think I
created it by hand.

Do others here have that directory? Is it empty for you?

Did my answer only work after upgrading to 3.0.4 or was it that the
problem only started after upgrade to 3.0.4?

Anyway, good luck and thanks :)

[Bug 221698] Re: Cannot resize window taller than screen.

2008-12-15 Thread era
As another partial workaround, you can use the keyboard bindings for
moving and resizing. It appears that only moving and resizing with the
mouse is constrained.

Press alt-space to open up the window menu, and press M for move or R
for resize. Cursor keys move the cursor, hit Enter to finish.

You can't resize outside the visible space in one go, but it's doable in
steps, by moving most of the window outside the visible area and then
resizing it (repeat if necessary).

3. I closed aMSN,

The program 'f-spot' received an X Window System error.
This probably reflects a bug in the program.
The error was 'BadRequest (invalid request code or no such operation)'.
  (Details: serial 362 error_code 1 request_code 143 minor_code 19)
  (Note to programmers: normally, X errors are reported asynchronously;
that is, you will receive the error a while after causing it.
To debug your program, run it with the --sync command line
option to change this behavior. You can then get a meaningful
backtrace from your debugger if you break on the gdk_x_error() function.)

2008-12-15 Thread stigweed
Still getting the error with 8.10 installed. noapic gets ride of it.

The weird freezing/IO thing has stopped but still having USB issues (ohci
works for a few hundred MB before crashing out and eventually coming back as
ehci which is an improvement in usability but very slow). Still got slow ATA
transfer but I guess these are for another bug report unless related to the
timer???

They did a great job! :-)

So no IO-APIC error? I still get that error on the liveCD for 8.10 and
gentoo but am going to try a reinstall today anyway and see how it goes.
With noapic option, the message goes away and things are better but I
currenlty still have a ton of trouble with USB flaking out and the system
doing _NOTHING_ without some user input (which with realplayer streams has
the effect that it goes silent at random then when you jog the mouse a whole
load of audio packets that somehow have been buffered somewhere come out at
once - similarly with vlc on some files). Strangely running azureus prevents
these pauses as if the network IO or azureus' disk IO is providing the
stimulus that jogging the mouse supplies.

It's just really wierd, happens at random and is really really frustrating.
I have trouble getting anything done on this machine and am moving most work
onto my ASUS notebook which works 100% fine with all ubuntu (except for the
Ricoh card reader and the slow hdparm - but that's another story...)

Re: [Bug 42926] Re: More granular font selection for the default install

2008-12-15 Thread Michiel Sikma
How about we make two packages--one which contains a set of basic
fonts for various scripts (Chinese, Hindi) and another which contains
extra fonts that are not really necessary. The two have separate
meanings, one is practical and the other is mainly for those who want
to use the fonts for, say, their OpenOffice documents.

We should keep in mind that users might not want to have the language
pack, yet still want to read documents made with the script. People
who natively speak English but work together with an Indian company,
for example.

If it doesn't work then I should say that the problem is in hal and not
in gnome-power-manager ( Since gpm runs the correct command but the
command is the problem)

[Bug 152116] Re: suspend does not work on toshiba satellite pro p100

2008-12-15 Thread Yann
With Hardy 2.6.24-21 kernel suspend was reliable on Toshiba p100... But
2.6.24-22 there is a regression: S2R only works first time and hangs
after that...

Should be nice to keep a positive progress scheme: Since Hardy release,
it's one step forward... and one step backward :o(

Regards

Re: [Bug 120434] Re: [needs-packaging] Ricoh R5U870 Webcam Driver

2008-12-15 Thread Franck
Hi,

I don't understand what Ozzyprv's comment means... Does it mean the
camera is detected and should work ?

Here is the output from my Sony Viao SZ4NM :

lsusb

Bus 005 Device 003: ID 05ca:1835 Ricoh Co., Ltd Visual Communication
Camera VGP-VCC5

lsmod | grep videodev

videodev 46720 2 uvcvideo,compat_ioctl32
v4l1_compat24580 2 uvcvideo,videodev

I can also confirm that Cheese or Ekiga don't see the device.

Franck

Hi all, can the reporters check what Ozzyprv has just reported?
Probably only applies to a small subset of Ricoh webcams thou.

[Bug 308125] Re: server X crashed on ATI Radeon card while running Kile

2008-12-15 Thread costavi
Ok, I am now able to exactly reproduce the crash.

Here are the steps to follow:

1) Start up ubuntu 8.04.1 in my laptop
2) open Nautilus file manager
3) navigate until I reach a .tex file
4) right click - Open with -- Open with Kile
5) put Kile in icon mode
6) navigate with nautilus until I find another .tex file IN A DIFFERENT FOLDER
7) right click -- Open with -- Open with Kile
8) Xorg Crash!!!

BEWARE:
- The crash does not happen with compiz effects down, and I happens if I start
them, even in minimal nomal mode.
- To reproduce the crash you can used a couple of custom .tex files, like the
two I attached above, but THEY MUST BE IN DIFFERENT FOLDERS.
