[Bug 314643] Re: package linux-image-2.6.27-11-generic 2.6.27-11.22 failed to install/upgrade: subprocess post-installation script returned error exit status 2

2009-01-28 Thread jay armstrong
I just tried to update to the following day's kernel: 2.6.27-11.26 and
ran into the same issue.

The first error I spot in the synaptic terminal is:

ERROR lilo fails for new /boot/initrd.img-2.6.27-11-generic:
...

And now, instead of the BIOS error, I get:

Fatal: raid_setup: stat("/dev/sda")

I'm not using any software raid or fake raid but do have bonafide
hardware raid card. Haven't had any issues duing the last 10 kernel
updates or so.

Also worth mentioning that I run LILO and use the server kernel so I can
enable PAE. Again, updating this hasn't been an issue before.

[Bug 318442] Re: openjdk-6-jdk should be the default/priority for javac

2009-01-28 Thread Steve Langasek
I've pushed a proposed fix in bzr (linked above) which I think is the
right fix for a more general problem, namely that there's other metadata
already available that should tell us which packages are preferred, but
we're not using it.

This change adds sorting the package by archive component (including
both the known Debian and Ubuntu components in the list, with all other
components sorted last).

To further improve the sort order, I think we should also sort by
package priority - which requires storing that information in the
database for all packages. The priority data in the Ubuntu archive is
more or less unmaintained at present, I think, but it /can/ be fixed up
if there's a use case, and I think that's a better choice than carrying
overrides around in the command-not-found package itself.

[Bug 322631] [NEW] unknown error occurs when editing a recurring appt in a gcal through evolution

2009-01-28 Thread Andre Casey
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: evolution

When trying to edit and save changes made to a recurring appointment in
a Google Calendar through Evolution results in an "Unknown Error"
message box to appear, resulting in no changes being made to said
appointment.

Steps to reproduce:
1. create appointment on thursday
2. Set recurrence to anything (I chose 4 times once a month)
3. Save
4. Try to edit appointment (I changed an alarm)
5. When you try and save, choose any of the options for recurrence (I tried
multiple).
6. A message box appear that says "Unknown Error", with no error code.
7. Closing the windows prompts to save or discard. Save button does nothing.
Discard does the obvious.

>From what I can tell this results in the changes to the appointment not being
>saved.
I looked in the system logs but could not find anything helpful. I could be
looking in the wrong place.

Again, this is editing an appointment to a google calendar that had been
added through evolution.

My info:
- Ubuntu 8.10
- Evo version 2.24.3-0ubuntu1

[Bug 197209] Re: fglrx + compiz fusion won't resume[AMD Feature#7647] [EPR#260329]

2009-01-28 Thread Dave Hay
Following Bryce Harrington's comments above, I do NOT find the problem
to be fixed in the kernel - I am running 2.6.27-11-generic on a 32bit
Intel dual core ( Thinkpad T60p 2007-AE7 ) and still find that I need to
use Dave Abraham's scripts.

Bryce comments that AMD report the problem being fixed in 2.6.27.9 -
given that 2.6.27.11 is now available, it's my assumption that, if it
was fixed, it's been broken again - with apparently identical symptoms.

Anyone else able to test / comment ?

[Bug 314643] Re: package linux-image-2.6.27-11-generic 2.6.27-11.22 failed to install/upgrade: subprocess post-installation script returned error exit status 2

2009-01-28 Thread jay armstrong
I'm getting the same error with today's update to 2.6.27-11.25 on both generic
and server. I can't copy the error so I'll sum it up:
...
Fatal: Bios device code 0x80 is being used by two disks
  /dev/sdc (0x0820) and /dev/sda (0x0800)
Failed to create initrd image.
...

sda is my boot disk and sdc is an audio player that's always plugged in
(has never been an issue before). I did plug in another USB flash disk
during the update (not sda nor sdc) ... might that have caused an issue?

At this point, I'm concerned that a reboot might break the system since
subsequent reinstallations continue to fail (even with the extra drives
removed).

[Bug 253468] Re: [Hardy] Ejecting usb hard disk gives error and remounts

2009-01-28 Thread remerson
I have this same issue with XUbuntu 8.10 Intrepid.

I've got two WD 320Gb drives which are physically identical but report
slightly different hardware revision numbers. Both are formatted ext3.

The "blue" drive works as expected but the "red" drive exhibits this
bug. dmesg reports slightly different hardware and SCSI mode sense.

I have the following settings checked in Thunar 'Removable Drives and
Media' configuration:

- Mount removable drives when hot plugged.
- Auto-run programs on new drives and media

Version details:

uname -a
Linux spire 2.6.27-11-generic #1 SMP Thu Jan 22 17:22:40 UTC 2009 i686 GNU/Linux

cat /proc/version_signature
Ubuntu 2.6.27-11.25-generic

[Bug 322628] [NEW] apport loads wrong URL into firefox

2009-01-28 Thread Rocko
Public bug reported:

When apport tries to report a bug, it is loading the wrong URL, eg it
just tried to open the URL
"file:///ubuntu/+source/linux/+filebug/cNROwfk1flDlzJbj72EGALA5OaE"
instead of the more expected
"https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+filebug/..."; for a kernel
crash. It has done this several times now so it might be a persistent
bug.

By the time it does this, apport has vanished and firefox just reports
that it can't find the file.

Version information:

Jaunty, kernel 2.6.28-6

[Bug 322627] [NEW] kernel crashed on resume from standby

2009-01-28 Thread Rocko
Public bug reported:

Apport tried to report this after the kernel (Jaunty, 2.6.28-6) crashed
on resume from standby.

Note: apport itself failed to complete the bug report because it tried
to open the wrong URL, ie
file:///ubuntu/+source/linux/+filebug/cNROwfk1flDlzJbj72EGALA5OaE, so I
re-edited the URL in firefox to make it
https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+filebug/cNROwfk1flDlzJbj72EGALA5OaE.
Hopefully it's the correct information.

This issue should be fixed by next week! The deinitialization of the
polling timers for the remote control in linux is a mess, since the
timer is still active after unplugging it and tries to access
deinitialized functions it will die.

[Bug 322604] Re: Ubuntu 8.10 Password Bug

2009-01-28 Thread Steve Beattie
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. This bug is likely a duplicate of bug 287134 and the
related bug 51551, which caused crypt(3) passwords to be used. Assuming
you've applied the security update for
http://www.ubuntu.com/usn/usn-663-1 if you change your password, it
should either get converted to an MD5 password or a SHA512 password, and
thus not be subject to the 8 character limit. MD5 hashed passwords in
/etc/shadow will be prefixed with $1$ and SHA512 hashes will have the
prefix $6$; crypt(3) hashes will contain no such prefix.

If you change your password and you still are getting crypt(3) hashes,
then either there there is a pam configuration issue or something was
incomplete with the update.

Please feel free to report additional issues you come across while using
Ubuntu. Thanks again.

[Bug 187313] Re: [MASTER] right click (with button release) might activate random popup-menu-item

2009-01-28 Thread Mitchell
Alexander, I agree with everyone that says that disabling accessibility is not
a workaround. In my case it was never enabled. Installing MouseGestures solved
the problem for me. I understand that this is not a true fix for the problem
but changing the behavior for Firefox right click through a patch instead of
installing MouseGestures would be a way to calm down the frustration of users
that already have noticed this bug but haven't reported yet because many users
(the most I guess) don't know how to solve their problems through launchpad or
irc (otherwise this bugreport would be a thousand times longer) . What I
propose is to release a package with this workaround and make people who have
this problem get informed that can install that package (maybe through ubuntu
webpage as a known issue). I propose this just because as others have said
before, Firefox is the default webbrowser in ubuntu and webbrowsing is an
important task in a desktop, so the first impression that a new ubuntu user can
have might be so frustrating that it would prevent him to consider ubuntu linux
as an alternative to his actual OS, and the importance of this bug should be
consider critical.
This just as a workaround until you reach to a real solution.

[Bug 301104] Re: mysql-server-5.0.postinst causes seg fault

2009-01-28 Thread AlexF
I know this is kinda old, but I had the exact same thing happen on a Xen
VPS running 8.04.01 LTS as well. Made me flip out when everything
stopped working. The answer is here:

http://wiki.xensource.com/xenwiki/XenFaq#head-
0c65b14e7ee88a250189f43f83138a3f712d8e4e

Under 4.1 of that FAQ:

"Some modern distributions ship with a 'TLS' version of glibc that is
not fully compatible with Xen. To use Xen reliably and with maximum
performance you must disable the incompatible glibc. You can easily do
this by moving the /lib/tls directory (e.g., mv /lib/tls
/lib/tls.disabled).

Alternatively, install a Xen-specific GLIBC, see XenSpecificGlibc."

Not sure if that's a Xen issue or a glibc issue.

2009-01-28 Thread Kees Cook
Thank you for using Ubuntu and taking the time to report a bug. Your
report should contain, at a minimum, the following information so we can
better find the source of the bug and work to resolve it.

Submitting the bug about the proper source package is essential. For
help see https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/FindRightPackage . Additionally,
in the report please include:

1) The release of Ubuntu you are using, via 'cat /etc/lsb-release' or System ->
About Ubuntu.
2) The version of the package you are using, via 'dpkg -l PKGNAME | cat' or by
checking in Synaptic.
3) What happened and what you expected to happen.

The Ubuntu community has also created debugging procedures for a wide
variety of packages at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingProcedures .
Following the debugging instructions for the affected package will make
your bug report much more complete. Thanks!

It is such a shame that Ubuntu has decided to not support Xen at all,
specially since currently is the best OSS VM out there. I would've
expected a least keep up the commitment to the 8.04 packages ...

Has anybody installed Xen 3.3 on Ubuntu 8.04, with the approved Xen
Kernel for dom0? That is my guess the only solution ...

Well, that shows that you don't have a separate /boot partition *mounted*,
but that doesn't mean you don't have one somewhere on your hard disk that's
being used instead. Are there no other partitions on your physical hard
disks besides the ones used for /dev/md0?

Also, is there a chance that your RAID array is running in degraded mode for
some reason, preventing the copy of /boot on the first drive from being
updated when you make changes to the system? (cat /proc/mdstat)

But as I said, this is unrelated to the bug you're following up to - this
question would be better dealt with in the Ubuntu forums.

Cheers,

[Bug 322621] [NEW] Ubuntu 8.04.2 LTS fails on Dell Optiplex 960

2009-01-28 Thread Vantrax
Public bug reported:

The Ubuntu 8.04.2 liveCD will not run on a Dell Optiplex 960.
If a Ubuntu 8.04.2 image is deployed to a Optiplex 960 to get it to boot you
have to load an 8.10 live CD, change the root to the local disk, edit the
sources to use intrepid releases, update the kernel to 2.6.27.9 (and
backports-modules) to get the machine to boot.

This is expected to be due to the sata3 hdd.

It would be good to have some sort of fix for this available so you
could just chroot then update to fix the problem.

This is somewhat a problem with the LTS failing on one of the three
standard corporate machines. I assume there will be similar problems
with the equivalent HP and IBM offerings.

[Bug 322623] [NEW] renrot ignores --dry-run, actually rotates images

Public bug reported:

When I do

renrot --dry-run -ext jpg

in a folder full of jpg files. Those files that have an exif orientation will
be rotated by renrot. The original files are retained as filename.jpg_orig.
None of this shows up in the console-log. The log is full of renames which are
not really taking place due to dry-run.
example output:

Processing file: (449 of 452) stb_0194.jpg ...
Renamed: stb_0194.jpg -> 20081106234154.jpg
Writing user defined EXIF tags to 20081106234154.jpg.

[Bug 292761] Re: [i855] laptop screen flickers

2009-01-28 Thread Russell O'Connor
Oops. After rereading this bug report, I see it isn't really the
problem I was having. I was having trouble with occasional flashes, and
X black screening when playing videos, and such. None the less Cosmin's
"solution" fixed this problem I was having.

Running on a Thinkpad X40 laptop here.

[Bug 275432] Re: libpolkit requires files from policykit for polkit_context_init to work

2009-01-28 Thread Steve Langasek
Hi Martin,

What feedback are you waiting for from upstream?

Moving these files into libpolkit would cause problems (file conflicts)
whenever the libpolkit soname changes, so should be avoided if possible.

The code James cites uses a function named 'polkit_debug' - perhaps if
this is for debugging only, it should not log anything by default? Or
perhaps we should not log debug-priority messages to /var/log/syslog by
default.

Either way, from the log it doesn't sound like this functionally impairs
the use of the library, is this really an SRU candidate or should we
'wontfix' the per-release tasks?

[Bug 282853] Re: Pidgin reports MSN contacts with mobile number always online

2009-01-28 Thread Mr. Mike
Note sure if this needs to be a separate bug, but what I found was that if I
have a contact with a mobile #, and they are "invisible", they can send
messages to Pidgin and I receive them, but any messages I send go to the mobile
#. Interestingly, the other machine DOES see the "xxx is typing a message",
but the message never appears - goes to the mobile.
Steps to reproduce:
 1) Set up two different MSN accounts - one for Pidgin, one for Windoze dead
messenger
 2) Configure the MSN Live messenger account with a mobile # to receive text
pages and "allow users on my contact list to send messages" or however you
enable that.
 3) Using two computers (or running Windoze within a VM), Login using Windoze
and set your status to "appear offline". Log in to Pidgin, too.
 4) From Windoze, send a message to Pidgin. Pidgin gets it.
 5) From Pidgin, send a message to Windows. The Windoze user will see "xxx is
typing a message", but will never get the message - it goes to the cell phone.

As of Jan. 28, 2009, this is using Pidgin 2.5.2 in Intrepid. Have not
yet ventured to Jaunty.

[Bug 202009] Re: update-grub not updating menu.lst

2009-01-28 Thread JacobSteelsmith
I tried running sudo update-grub and sudo dpkg-reconfigure linux-
image-2.6.27-11-generic to no avail. menu.lst looks good, but the grub
menu at boot time is still the old menu.

I am curious as to where menu.lst is being read from or cached. In my
experience, if menu.lst was changed, it would show on the next reboot
with no other steps required.

I'm pretty sure you're seeing a different bug, then. It sounds like either
your /boot partition is not mounted, or the instance of grub being used to
boot is pointing at a different installation of Ubuntu.

[Bug 248705] Re: Evolution Exchange does not authenticate to Exchange servers with a relative path in the form action, e.g. "owaauth.dll"

2009-01-28 Thread hyperair

Evolution fails to authenticate with Exchange servers with web interface

leading /, or protocol specified). An example of a form can be found

+ Version of evolution-data-server this happens in: 2.24.3-0ubuntu1
(intrepid-updates)
+ This is fixed in version 2.24.3-0ubuntu2, which is in Jaunty.

TEST CASE: Attempt to create a new account in Evolution to said Exchange
server. Credentials must be valid, and have been verified by attempting
the web login. Evolution will prompt for the password endlessly, as
  though the password is wrong.

E2K_DEBUG=4 evolution will show the a HTTP/1.1 302 response, followed by
a GET request to /exchweb/bin/auth/owalogon.asp?something, and then a
HTTP/1.1 200 response, and a warning message about an invalid URI
  'owaauth.dll'.

What should happen: Instead of a warning message regarding invalid URI
owaauth.dll, there should be a POST request to
/exchweb/bin/auth/owaauth.dll. With E2K_DEBUG=5, this request is shown
to contain the username and password.
