[Bug 271922] Re: Default ACL not applied on files created through CIFS filesystem (mount.cifs)

2009-02-17 Thread Etienne Goyer
I can confirm the default ACL for other are being applied correctly on
file creation through a CIFS mount with the POSIX extensions disabled,
on hardy.

The ability to create pipe and socket is not important in my case, and I
think I can do without POSIX file locking. As such, disabling the POSIX
extensions is ok with me.

I have not tried on Jaunty or on the latest Samba upstream.

2009-02-17 Thread Vegard Svanberg
Hardy? I'm on 8.10, isn't that Intrepid? Getting confused here :-)

Anyway, I was in a hurry so I grabbed the Dovecot package from Jaunty.
Seems to work (but not sure yet, I'll let it run for a few days).

[Bug 281882] [NEW] ssh hangs in initial handshaking when using IPv6

2009-02-17 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
You have been subscribed to a public bug:

ssh hangs in initial handshaking when using IPv6 to connect with a
NetBSD 4.0 ssh server. I tried NetBSD on i386 and amd64.

Here is the output from ssh -v when it fails: (I censored the IPv6
address)

rhia...@glicca:~$ ssh -v radl

and here it hangs, until the other side times out.
When using IPv4 it works fine.

strace shows that ssh hangs in a select() call:

read(3, u, 1) = 1

select(4, [3], NULL, NULL, NULL

It is apparently an Ubuntu 8.04.1-specific problem, since some other people I
polled on a #netbsd irc channel reported that they could repeat the problem on
Ubuntu-based machines but the problem did not occur for other Linux
distributions. I'm using eeebuntu on an Eee 901 which is based on 8.04.01.
I found a xubuntu 8.04 live cd which does not show the problem so probably the
problem is quite specific.

hm, does that think I don't have ssh installed? I wonder which ssh I am then
supposed to be using...
It does claim to be OpenSSH_4.7p1 Debian-8ubuntu1.2, OpenSSL 0.9.8g 19 Oct

I expect the ssh client to continue after SSH2_MSG_KEXINIT, like when
using IPv4.

[Bug 315774] Re: libsmbclient-dev missing smbc_urlencode in .a in intrepid

2009-02-17 Thread Topfs2
Nice to hear, just wondering if this will be fixed for intrepid?

Basically team-xbmc would ideally want to use libsmbclient-dev so we
could link to the systemlib instead because we have issues regarding x64
with our precompiled version and can´t switch due to this bug.

If it won´t be backported for intrepid we´ll just have to try to another
way (would love not to though ;) )

[Bug 259609] Re: package samba 2:3.2.1-1ubuntu1 failed to install/upgrade: subprocess post-installation script returned error exit status 1

2009-02-17 Thread PAD
Same here, using Debian Lenny.
I messed up smb.conf, so I decided reinstall samba thinking it would give me a
fresh smb.conf, and it didn't, same messed up file was there.
Then I removed samba again, removed the entire /etc/samba folder, and
reinstalled samba giving a post-installation error nmbd failed to start, and
/etc/samba folder wasn't created.

After reading this post, tried removing also samba-common, though samba-common
isn't a dependency of samba package. Bad idea, now I can't install samba-common
again because /etc/samba/smb.conf doesn't exists and obviously it won't create
it.
So which package originally created /etc/samba folder and configuration files??
Or how can I make this folder and conf files get back?

[Bug 259609] Re: package samba 2:3.2.1-1ubuntu1 failed to install/upgrade: subprocess post-installation script returned error exit status 1

2009-02-17 Thread PAD
Well, I've managed the samba reinstallation in the next way.

Noticed that samba depends on samba-common, and samba-common needed the
smb.conf I deleted, which it should actually provide, I think.
So I decided create a fake smb.conf (touch /etc/samba/smb.conf). Then I could
install samba-common and it didn't complain about the empty file. Then I could
install samba, also without any complain about an empty smb.conf.
Next I thought was.. Now I just need to find the original smb.conf on the web
and voila.., but before doing that, I realized looking in samba-common package
info, that it installed a kind of template for smb.conf in /usr/share/samba, so
I copied that file back to /etc/samba, so the server was aparentely working
again, at least it didn't complain about anything.
Another thing I realized looking on samba-common package info, was that it
should have intalled /etc/samba/gdbcommands which I've seen before deleting
them, but now is not there.

I have also taken a working Intrepid virtual machine and dist-upgraded
to Jaunty. Once upgraded OpenLDAP crashes when trying to use GSSAPI
method to access the DB.

[Bug 306002] Re: /etc/mysql/my.cnf cannot be read

2009-02-17 Thread Jerod D. Klink
I can attest to having the same problem; using 8.10.
In my case, I installed sudo apt-get install mythtv, (which installed
mysql-server correctly).
But I removed mythtv soon after install (as I screwed up one of the options
picked during install).
After successive tries to (re) install mythtv (along with mysql-server), I
continue to get this error.
I believe at some point I deleted /etc/mysql -- in hopes of clearing everything
and getting a fresh install.
Now during installation of mythtv, I get this problem, as it appears I've lost
the original my.cnf and it never gets replaced by successive attempts to
(re)install mythtv.

[Bug 36102] Re: Can't switch keyboard layout in gksu

2009-02-17 Thread positivek
It's strange that the gnome-screensaver (bug 49222) and gksu / gksudo do
not use the same dialog mechanisms. I think a bigger bug is that they
should both use the same code.

I tried reporting it at Gnome. This bug (
http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=537486 ) was listed as not a
gtk bug. Whose is it, then? Who maintains gksu / gksudo?

Running Ubuntu 8.10 (Intrepid) with the latest updates. Gnome 2.24.1.

Note also that this could/should be coordinated with any and all other
areas where login credentials are necessary, right? E.g. bug 14571.

[Bug 330414] [NEW] please sync gourmet 0.14.5-1 from debian unstable

2009-02-17 Thread Rolf Leggewie
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gourmet

Please sync gourmet 0.14.5-1 which I only recently got into Debian
unstable but which I feel more confident in supporting for Jaunty. I am
Debian Maintainer for the package.

http://ftp.de.debian.org/debian/pool/main/g/gourmet/gourmet_0.14.5-1.dsc

There are no Ubuntu specific changes and the Changelog from the version
already in Jaunty reads as follows.

 gourmet (0.14.5-1) unstable; urgency=low

   * new upstream release
   * 0.14.5 no longer conflicts with newer versions of python-pysqlite and
 python-sqlalchemy. Relax dependencies accordingly.
   * all patches have been pushed upstream, so they can be dropped in Debian.
The manpage was forgotten when preparing the tarball upstream, so it
will stick around for another release.

[Bug 330419] [NEW] GNOME+Kwin: desktops aren't drawn

2009-02-17 Thread Sridhar Dhanapalan
Public bug reported:

I've got Kwin set as my window manager in GNOME (I prefer it to Metacity
and Compiz). This is set in the Session Manager (System Preferences
Sessions), where I add an item that executes kwin --replace and
disable Metacity/Compiz from loading.

I've got multiple desktops set up via the Kwin settings. On the first
desktop, wallpaper and desktop icons are drawn as expected. All the
other desktops, however, are completely black with nothing on them.

Tested with Ubuntu 8.10.

[Bug 330424] [NEW] process consumes all ram, reading X keyboard settings over and over again

2009-02-17 Thread Matt Wilkie
Public bug reported:

If I attempt to run OpenOffice, VLC, or K9copy (there may be others too,
these are just the ones I've identified) the process rapidly consumes
(500mb in 1 minute) all available ram and renders the system unusable.
If I turn swapoff the computer will recover after a time, having killed
the offending process, and I can use the computer again. If swap is not
turned off, even after 15 hours the computer is almost completely
unresponsive even after 15 hours of disk thrashing.

Based on advice of johanbr on #ubuntu-ca I ran 'strace -p
$k9copy_process_id 2strace-k9copy.log'. The log is 22mb. I'll post the
head and tail of 100 lines below. Johanbr said the process keeps re-
reading the X keyboard settings over and over again and asked if I have
an unusual keyboard configuration -- I don't believe so.

System Preferences Keyboard Keyboard preferences says keyboard
Dell with USA layout. It is actually an IBM model SK-8820, however
that model is not available in the IBM section. There are two dell
models with similar model numbers: SK-8125, SK-8135.

From System Preferences Keyboard I changed the keyboard to Generic 101 key
and applied system wide.
K9copy still consumes all available ram, or I presume it would if I let it. I
killed it from System Monitor after it used 900mb and still hadn't shown a
splash screen or window.

Also see https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+question/56166

My system vital statistics:

Ubuntu 8.10 amd64
Kernel 2.6.27-11-generic
Gnome 2.24.1
AMD Athlon 64 x2 Dual Core Processor 4200+
115gb available disk space (of 290gb)
3GB of ram.

I believe the first ubuntu release installed on this computer was 5.10
but it may have been 6.04. It's been upgraded in-situ ever since. I
regularly check and apply updates (weekly or better). I did not
experience any problems of this sort until upgrading to 8.10 (yes this
has been going on for several months now).

I am having the exact same problem. I have downloaded every download and

Unforntunatly my girlfriend doenst like using alt tab to switch between

any application the icon disaperes making it impossible to click on with
the mouse. So when my girlfriend minamizes facebook and opens a new
window to myspace she loses the browser! Like I said it stays open
somerwher and I can access it with alt tab. I will give more information
if you tell me what you need. thankes. I love Ubuntu and everything it

[Bug 213114] Re: Can't build qc-usb kernel modules with module-assistant

2009-02-17 Thread John Stephenson
Jason, my system is Linux 2.6.28-7-generic #20-Ubuntu SMP i686
GNU/Linux. I saved the two patches from the links, as copying them from
your post produced errors. I ran (as root):

# apt-get install qc-usb-source qc-usb-utils
# cd /usr/src
# tar xvfj qc-usb.tar.bz2
# cd modules/qc-usb
# patch ~/Desktop/patch1
# patch ~/Desktop/patch2
# make
# make install

This worked perfectly with no errors! Thanks for pointing me to the
patches!

However, I rebooted and then tried:

# modprobe quickcam
FATAL: Module quickcam not found.

Then tried:

# insmod quickcam.ko
insmod: error inserting 'quickcam.ko': -1 Unknown symbol in module

Any thoughts?

[Bug 295569] Re: wesnoth crashed with SIGSEGV in malloc()

2009-02-17 Thread Pauli
Seems like this is related to bugs in network_worker.cpp.

Did it ever crash when you first time connected to any server? (if yes
then this is _not_ networking thread freeing bug)

So it is very likely that bug was fixed when wesnoth was upgraded from
1.4.4 to 1.4.5.

[Bug 330145] Re: hibernate/resume problem

2009-02-17 Thread Andy Whitcroft
Could you please let us know the type of machine this is (make and
model). The machine actually did not suspend-to-ram but suspend-to-disk
(hibernate), we can tell this as we record the suspend type on the way
down. I would have expected the machine to be off after this and then
to turn on normally. As long as you have the same kernel when you came
back up it should have resumed from it.

Could you test hibernate under normal conditions and see if that works
ok?

[Bug 137247] Re: libpam-keyring broken on autologins

2009-02-17 Thread Christian A. Reiter
The problem is that it still doesn't work.
We (the users) don't know exactly what package is the culprit. You can change
the package if you know another one contains the error.
But the bug is *not* fixed, please change the status to that.

Test:
Connect to a wireless network, reboot - at autologin it reconnects
automatically.
Then change your (login) password - you have to *manually* change the keyring
password to the same one, otherwise NM won't connect automatically to the
wireless network.

i'm trying to make my new ubuntu work (had a problem with playing movies)
1) a friend told me to intall libdvdcss2,

2) synaptic told me there was a java element missing, which i installed
and i installed the jdk at the same time

3) the installation of jdk crashed because it missed the documentation, i
thought i could do without since i'm in a hurry,
and press 'no, plus ctrl' to abort( as synaptic suggests) but it seems to get
caught in that, since synaptic now keeps on repeating this.

[Bug 330430] Re: RFE: dch should understand cli environment variables

2009-02-17 Thread Rolf Leggewie
Hm, looks like I was approaching this from the wrong angle.

The DEBCHANGE_TZ variable has been introduced to specifically override
any environment variables. At least that is my understanding now. What
I want can be done like this (unless DEBCHANGE_TZ is set in
~/.devscripts)

TZ=Japan dch -i
TZ=Europe/Berlin dch -i
...

Makes me wonder if DEBCHANGE_TZ is actually useful (see comment from
Loïc Minier in debbug 417261 on Thu, 5 Apr 2007 10:36:39 +0200) instead
of detrimental. The documentation should be improved to prevent
misunderstandings like in my case. I'll leave this bug open to achieve
that.

[Bug 330437] [NEW] impossible to clear trash-bin when it contains read-only folders

2009-02-17 Thread Leonid Evdokimov
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: nautilus

$ lsb_release -rd
Description:Ubuntu 8.10
Release:8.10

I have nautilus-1:2.24.1-0ubuntu2

Steps to reproduce:

Copy directory with some subdirectories from CD to home directory and delete it
to trash.
Try to empty trash — and you'll get message Error while deleting file:
Permission denied.
Try to empty trash with gnome applet menu (right-click on the trash icon in the
taskbar gives menu and Empty trash is one of its items) and it'll show you
progress-bar and will finish cleanup without any error but files will be left
in the trash.
If you try to change permissions for the folder inside of trash, you get error
message the action is not supported by the driver.

Possible workaround is to run `chmod -R u+w
~/.local/share/Trash/files/*`.

[Bug 330032] Re: suspend/resume problem

2009-02-17 Thread Andy Whitcroft
For the X restart issue, when this occurs could you grab the dmesg
command output and the /var/log/Xorg.log.0 and attache them to this bug.
For the rt73usb module issue, are you having to remove that manually to
be able to suspend? You should be able to add that to
/etc/pm/config.d/config, you need a line which looks like:

SUSPEND_MODULES=$SUSPEND_MODULES rt73usb

But you should probabally file a separate bug for that issue.

2009-02-17 Thread Andy Whitcroft
Thank you for the information. As you have never suspended this must be
a false report, sorry about that. As the machine is formatted back to
Intrepid we would not be able to further diagnose this. I will
therefore close it off for now. You english is perfectly good you do
not need to appolgise for it. Thanks for reporting, please continue to

Re: [Bug 315889] Re: [R580] EXA has severe performance impact on ATI R580 (X1900)

There used to be a hook in modprobe that would only load the fglrx
module if fglrx was specified as the driver in xorg.conf. Now that
xorg.conf is not used any longer (for ati at least, and I suppose for
fglrx neither?), this is no solution. I guess our X has been patched to
prefer the fglrx driver if it is installed. One ugly way would then be
to only load the fglrx module if fglrx is installed.

in my case i only had the fglrx kernel part installed and not the
xorg part. So this seems to be no solution.

Adding a fglrx breaks ati would most precisely describe the truth, but
it we don't really want people to uninstall ati because they want to try
 out fglrx.

Well, i am not really for promoting fglrx ... if there is the choice
of a) either breaking your free ati driver or b) making it painful to
test fglrx lets chooose b).

At least there should be some dependency between linux-source-fglrx and
the fglrx package so that uninstalling fglrx will uninstall linux-
source-fglrx as well. asac, did you keep the fglrx package and switched
to ati in xorg.conf? This scenario should ideally be handled by the
 above mentioned module hook.

i didnt keep the xorg fglrx package ... i removed it and forgot about
the linux-source package. AFAIK, there is no mechanism to make
linux-source-fglrx go away if you uninstlal the xorg package; a bit
hacky, but we could put the content of linux-source-fglrx into the
xorg package.

IMO, we should add a hook that doesnt load the fglrx module unless

 a) fglrx is in xorg.conf
 b) not -ati xorg driver is installed

Shouldn't the brightness levels start from 0 from left to 15 to the right? Well
that could be a cause for the inverted brightness in the brightness applet and
the normal brigtness adjustment with the FN keys?
