[Bug 339823] [NEW] qmgr process loads the system when using rate_* in custom transports

2009-03-09 Thread Santiago Romero
Public bug reported:

Last month I had a load average issue in a postfix mail server (only runs
postfix service). Suddenly, load average started to raise and qmgr process
appeared on top of top taking 20-30% of CPU.

top - 18:19:54 up 7 days, 2:03, 2 users, load average: 4.94, 3.96, 4.02

23662 root 20 0 5392 1732 1400 R 6.0 0.2 20:49.46 master

Network traffic was low and we had the normal throughput of emails.

Queue had only 73 emails in it when the problem happened (just like now,
they are all deferred emails).

Doing postfix stop / postfix start solved the problem.

I reported the bug to Postfix Users mailing list and postfix's Author
(Wietse Venema) found that it was a bug and posted a PATCH in the
mailing list

 Some snippets from the list:

---
VICTOR DUCHOVNI:
Please wait for an updated patch, we believe we have identified the
cause and reproduced the symptoms (in that order). I have a candidate
patch, but I expect Wietse will send an updated more polished version
in the not too distant future.

The issue found applies only to rate-limited transports, if you are
not using such transports, you don't need the patch. The patch ensures
that work done at the completion of a delivery with a normal transport
is correctly split between before suspend and after resume.

The original 2.5.x code is correct for oqmgr, but not for qmgr
(aka nqmgr), which requires additional internal state adjustments
when destinations are blocked and unblocked.

---
WIETSE VENEMA:

To apply this patch, cd into the Postfix-2.5.* top-level source
directory and execute:

$ patch  thismessage

We were able to reproduce the scheduler looping problem, and it
does not recur with the patched version.

Wietse

---

I applied the patch and the problem didn't happen again, but I need that patch
to be integrated into postfix's ubuntu deb packages so that I can still benefit
of future security upgrades.

 The patch was submitted at:

Date: Thu, 5 Mar 2009 17:41:51 -0500 (EST)

 Thanks a lot.

[Bug 339823] Re: qmgr process loads the system when using rate_* in custom transports

2009-03-09 Thread Santiago Romero

I'm attaching the patch posted by Wietse Venema at the mailing list.

I don't know why, but I have 5 rejects applying the patch. The
substituted code was OK, but some lines where 2 or 3 lines below the
line-id's in the patch :-?

I corrected the .rej manually and the patch is working. Let me know if
you need me to extract my custom patch as difference from my current
sources and the standard postfix ubuntu sources.

Confirmed based on upstream patch. I think we should get this into
Jaunty and SRU for Hardy/Intrepid. My imression based on the discussion
on the upstream ML is that this doesn't bite a lot of people, but when
it bites, it bites hard.

[Bug 338411] Re: Cannot retreive share list if samba client and server have the same hostname

2009-03-09 Thread David Bensimon
Sorry if the bug description was not clear. The reason for staring this
bug is not an attempt to fix this flaw in the smb protocol, but to have
Ubuntu fail gracefully, while providing an error which helps the user
diagnose, understand and correct the issue.

The error should attempt to explain the issue:
==
Failed to retrieve share list from server. It is possible the server you are
attempting to browse has the same hostname as you (or another node). To avoid
this collision, please change hostnames on your network to be unique.
Optionally, you can connect to the remote share by IP address in Places
Connect to server to circumvent the issue.

Re: [Bug 305264] Re: gnutls regression: failure in certificate chain validation

2009-03-09 Thread Doug Engert

Mathias Gug wrote:

Yes, that is what we have had to do.

The real fix is to get the gnutls people to support certificate
directories, like OpenSSL. Why the rush to convert to gnutls
when it has so many issues. (Licencing issues are low on my list of
reasons.)

If the system running slapd is on hardy (or intrepid or jaunty) you
should also add all of the CA certificates to the server certificate
file - this is to workaround a bug where the slapd daemon doesn't send
all of the CA certificates to the client.

All or just the intermediate certificates?

Another issue with gnutls, no intermediate file (or directory) of
certificates.

IMAP -- which is to say, none, since I could not login to dovecot
anymore. Uninstalling dovecot-postfix did not resolve it; uninstalling
--purge did, followed by manually resetting all email filters on
Evolution.

Instead dovecot-postfix installation should not replace a currently in-
use dovecot.conf, but suggest a match merge.

option was to keep the client libraries to 2.1.

If the system running slapd is on hardy (or intrepid or jaunty) you

The intermediate certificates should be enough. If not all of them

Another issue with gnutls, no intermediate file (or directory) of

Re: [Bug 339966] [NEW] dangerous action: dovecot-postfix force-installs new conf file

2009-03-09 Thread Mathias Gug
Hi,

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better.

On Mon, Mar 09, 2009 at 02:57:16PM -, C de-Avillez wrote:
 Package Version: dovecot-postfix_1%3a1.1.11-0ubuntu2_all.deb
Expected Results: current dovecot configuration will stay active, user will

Actual Results: existing configuration replaced by new dovecot-postfix.cfg.

I already run dovecot, and have it configured to use IMAP. After
installing dovecot-postifx, dovecot was re-initialised, and defaulted to
/etc/dovecot/dovecot-postfix.cfg (out of the default, and correctly
 configured my my use) /etc/dovecot/dovecot.cfg.

Technically your customized dovecot.cfg file hasn't been overwritten
since the dovecot-postfix package installs a new configuration file
(dovecot-postfix.cfg). However the new configuration file
(dovecot-postfix.cfg) takes precedence over the standard one
(dovecot.cfg) when dovecot is started from the init script. Thus the
configuration of the system has been changed.

Immediate mayhem ensured on my email clients. Even more painful,
Evolution immediately reconfigured all email filters to access the new
IMAP -- which is to say, none, since I could not login to dovecot
anymore. Uninstalling dovecot-postfix did not resolve it; uninstalling
--purge did, followed by manually resetting all email filters on
 Evolution.

Instead dovecot-postfix installation should not replace a currently in-
use dovecot.conf, but suggest a match merge.

According to the dovecot-postfix description:

Ubuntu's mail stack provides fully operational mail server with safe
defaults and additional options. Out of the box it supports IMAP, POP3
and SMTP services with SASL authentication and Maildir as default
  storage engine.

This package contains configuration file for dovecot.

What were your expectations when installing the dovecot-postfix package?
I'm not sure we can support upgrades from an existing running dovecot
system.

[Bug 162253] Re: openssh: want hpn-ssh for 20x speed improvement!

2009-03-09 Thread Alois Hammer
I've looked around and seen some valid concerns about incorporating a
large patchset like this into the Ubuntu packages, but:

1) It's real handy. I'm getting easy 2.5x boosts at home over a single-
switch gig-e network.

2) Upstream (openssh.com) doesn't seem to have any burning interest that
I can find, after... two years of availability?

3) Upstream (psc.edu) seems willing and able to maintain relatively
regular patchset versions for several OpenSSH releases at a time. No
release for 5.2 just now, but that doesn't seem like significant lag
(yet), in context.

[Bug 339966] Re: dangerous action: dovecot-postfix force-installs new conf file

2009-03-09 Thread C de-Avillez
The problem is that on already-configured dovecot installations there is
a chance that the dovecot-postifx.conf will not work out-of-the-box. I
am sure that for *new* installations of dovecot the provided d-p.conf
will work fine -- but this is not to be expected for existing installs.

But ideally -- on existing customised dovecot installs --, the new
configuration should be installed as -- say -- dovecot-
postfix.conf.dpkg.inst, or similar, giving time for the system
maintainer to check and adjust as needed.

The newly-installed d-p.conf was broken, for me:

1. replaced my SSL certs by a default SSL cert;
2. disabled SSL client authentication;
3. reset user name formatting to the default (u...@realm, instead of just
username);
4. disabled MD5 authentication.

These are small changes, but the result was -- for example -- the loss
of all Evolution mail filters for all clients, since nobody could
connect to IMAP anymore.

If, instead, the new dovecot configuration was created *without* being
set active (and a warning given that dovecot-postfix integration was not
yet active), I would have had time to adjust, check set the
integration without causing any users any pain.

I have since reinstalled dovecot-postifx, but now I knew the install was
going to be broken, so I took the necessary care.

If no such option (*not* to blindly replace existing dovecot
configuration) can be be provided, then at least the installation
procedure should provide an option to be cancelled.

[Bug 227344] Re: bind-dlz und ldap api

2009-03-09 Thread concentus
This bug is still in the current bind9-package for ubuntu-intrepid.
I checked the source (apt-get source bind9) and the % was not replaced with a
$ in contrib/dlz/drivers/sdlz_helper.c.
So it's not possible to get bind9-dl-ldap to work.

Thank you

[Bug 321787] Re: slapindex fails to re-index properly

2009-03-09 Thread Mathias Gug
I cannot reproduce your bug:

  * re-index - su openldap slapindex

This command doesn't work: the openldap account has a shell set to
/bin/false. Thus su openldap CMD doesn't work:

r...@t-slapd:~# su openldap echo DDD
r...@t-slapd:~#

Try sudo slapindex instead (and correct the ownership of the files in
/var/lib/ldap if necessary).

[Bug 339966] Re: dangerous action: dovecot-postfix force-installs new conf file

2009-03-09 Thread C de-Avillez
heh. Because I thought (wrongly, perhaps) that integration between
Dovecot and postfix would be nice...

Of course (and no need to rub it even more on my face, it is already
smeared all over ;-), I should have been more careful, and installed it
first on a test machine.

I wasn't, and I didn't. And this is clear from the fact that I opened
this bug ashamed grin/.

So, this time I 'dpkg -x' the package on a temp space, and looked at the
provided configuration, and at the post-inst scripts. Then I prepared
myself an adjusted dovecot-postfix.conf, installed d-p, stopped dovecot
again, replaced the provided d-p with my version, and restarted --
successfully -- dovecot.

[Bug 162253] Re: openssh: want hpn-ssh for 20x speed improvement!

2009-03-09 Thread Joe Harrington
Ubuntu is a packager, not a developer. The right way to get this to
happen is for someone (who would have to be more motivated than I am) to
talk to the Debian SSH maintainers, or even the openssh developers
themselves. Options include forking (bad), making a completely new
package out of the patched ssh and getting that into debian in parallel
with the regular ssh, making such a package and serving it elsewhere, or
convincing debian to accept the patch. I don't think this is the venue
for further discussion, as it's clear ubuntu will not do anything
directly.

[Bug 331369] Re: regression vs. notification-daemon: positioning when multiple screens are available

2009-03-09 Thread TJ
This also affects multiple X screens.

1. Notification always appears on screen 0.
2. When focus is on screen 1+, the notification 'flashes' briefly (1/10th
second) on screen 0.
3. When focus is on screen 0, the notification appears. If the focus is moved
to another screen the notification disappears. If focus returns to screen 0
notification re-appears (all within the overall notification time-out).

A related issue is that when running multiple X-screens applications are
'associated' with the specific screen (both by the user and the system).
Therefore there is a high user expectation that if (say) Evolution or
Firefox are running on screen 1+ the notification or alert should appear
on that screen.

This is especially important since multiple X screens may well be
running in physically different locations (e.g. different rooms).

[Bug 303697] Re: [fglrx] video tearing / vsync problems - independent of compiz use

2009-03-09 Thread gsf_atx
I've tried enabling the OpenGL video output in xorg.conf as well as
selecting it as output type in vlc. There is still tearing, it doesn't
seem to improve.

On a good note, I have built, installed and set up the RadeonHD free
xorg driver (v1.2.4) and video playback is superb. Unfortunately, that
driver doesn't have any DRI support for my video chip, so I must use
full software rendering. My CPU can handle HD resolution video without
any noticeable problem.

I restarted with the FGLRX driver and played the video under vlc with
the same options (hardware acceleration disabled) and there was still
tearing.

[Bug 328372] Re: firefox doesn't work properly after an update

2009-03-09 Thread Mathieu Fontaine
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 338785 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/338785

John, I'm not sure that this bug is a dupe of bug #338785.
In his bug, Rilium said he had to restart completely his computer to get
firefox work again.
For me, restarting firefox was enough.

I'm aware that this bug can be not considerate as a bug because we are warned
to restart firefox just after an upgrade.
But can't we expect to be able to work in good conditions until the next
firefox restart ?
For me, after an upgrade, we have two solutions :
- either we are forced to restart firefox to be able to go on,
- or we can go on without restarting, but also without bugs.

For now, Firefox permits to go on without restarting after an update,
but in an unstable way. That can be frustrating.

[Bug 283165] Re: Intrepid beta kernel panic acx.ko with TNET1130 incorrect firmware version

2009-03-09 Thread AndrewL
Hi Jap1968,
I suggest you try alternative firmware versions as I was able to get the driver
to be stable with 1.2.1.34. You can find the available firmware versions by
looking in the readme file in /lib/firmware/acx/README.txt. You then set the
firmware version by adding a line to the /etc/modprobe.d/options file like
'option acx firmware_ver=1.2.1.34'

Regards
Andrew L

If it's too difficult to update nm-system-settings in Intrepid then why
not settle for my one-line patch (for Intrepid). Yeah, it's not the
correct fix, but I doubt it will cause any harm either.

[Bug 339743] Re: Jaunty i386 popen() misbehaves on x86_64 kernel 2.6.26

2009-03-09 Thread Anders Kaseorg
And the first commit after v2.6.26 on which the problem is NOT exhibited
is:

commit ed8cae8ba01348bfd8f4648dd807b04d7f08
Author: Ulrich Drepper drep...@redhat.com
Date: Wed Jul 23 21:29:30 2008 -0700

flag parameters: pipe

This patch introduces the new syscall pipe2 which is like pipe but it also
takes an additional parameter which takes a flag value. This patch
implements
the handling of O_CLOEXEC for the flag. I did not add support for the new
syscall for the architectures which have a special sys_pipe implementation.
 I
think the maintainers of those archs have the chance to go with the unified
implementation but that's up to them.

The implementation introduces do_pipe_flags. I did that instead of changing
all callers of do_pipe because some of the callers are written in assembler.
I would probably screw up changing the assembly code. To avoid breaking
code
do_pipe is now a small wrapper around do_pipe_flags. Once all callers are
changed over to do_pipe_flags the old do_pipe function can be removed.

[Bug 282220] Re: Hibernate fails on Thinkpad T41

2009-03-09 Thread XiFu
I was confused too, Ranxerox, but just the lines with ## are real
comments, lines with a single # are used by the interpreter.

So the procedure that worked for me (ThinkPad X31) is this:

1. Backup /boot/grub/menu.lst

2. Open /boot/grub/menu.lst in an editor (sudo gedit
/boot/grub/menu.lst)

3. Change the line # defoptions=quiet splash to # defoptions=quiet
splash acpi_sleep=s4_nohwsig. These are the default options for each
kernel in the boot menu.

4. Run sudo update-grub

5. Reboot and test

I would not advise to update the BIOS, because, as for me, my wifi-card
would not work anymore (my BIOS is hacked, because IBM implemented a
whitelist in the BIOS, so only som wifi-cards are working).
