[Bug 367164] [NEW] "Set date and time automatically" doesn't work

2009-04-25 Thread Martin
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: kdebase-workspace

When I check "Set date and time automatically" in systemsettings, that
will set the time and date that one time, but the next time I open
systemsettings, the option is always unchecked again.

Is this thing supposed to adjust date&time automatically in regular
intervals? With ntpd?

If it's not, the labeling and the interface with the checkbox is
misleading and should be changed (like from a checkbox to a button).
That would make it more clear that what you're doing is a one-time
synchronization, not setting the system up to undergo regular
synchronization with a time server.

Architecture: amd64

[Bug 347078] Re: runaway Xorg in drmDMA() (radeon)

2009-04-25 Thread Philipp Kießler
I did a bit of testing and discovered an interesting point: only
Qt4-applications are extremly slow, but not from the start but after
about three quarters of a minute to one minute. When I'm using e.g.
yakuake or opera, which are both still Qt3-applications, I do not have
any problems with GUI-speed, artefacts or anything else.

I also had a look into my X.org-Logs. I could not find anything
extraordinary...

[Bug 367163] [NEW] gpg uses popup dialog instead of cli by default

2009-04-25 Thread Matt Jones
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnupg

On ubuntu jaunty 32bit:

For some reason gnupg uses a popup dialog to ask for passphrases,
instead of using the command line. This means that things like debuild
will also use popup dialogs when signing packages.

This breaks lots of software and scripts that are reliant on it being
able to pragmatically drive gpg and debuild.

The default behaviour should be to use the cli. With an option for popup
dialogs.

This was not a problem in hardy or intrepid.

[Bug 367160] [NEW] Modeline scanning behavior does not match documentation (off-by-one error?)

2009-04-25 Thread Jonathan Rascher
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gedit

The modelines plugin doesn't quite work as documented in the gedit
manual. Modelines are not recognized on some lines where there should
be, and they are recognized on some lines where they should not be.

Expected results (according to the documentation):
* Emacs modelines are recognized on the first two lines of a file.
* Vim modelines are recognized on the first and last three lines of a file.
* Kate modelines are recognized on the first and last ten lines of a file.

Actual results:
* Emacs modelines are recognized on the first line of a file.
* Vim modelines are recognized on the first two and last four lines of a file.
* Kate modelines are recognized on the first nine and last ten lines of a file.

Perhaps the most annoying effect of this bug is that only the first line
of a file is scanned for an Emacs modeline. This makes it impossible to
use Emacs modelines in files that must begin with shebang lines.

[Bug 367158] [NEW] DVD drive missing

2009-04-25 Thread Tan Kah Ping
Public bug reported:

Jaunty doesn't detect my DVD writer. From dmesg i noticed some lines
possibly related to this:

[3.808051] ata5.00: NODEV after polling detection

I tried running 'sudo modprobe ide_generic' & 'sudo modprobe ata_piix'
but I just get the message: 'FATAL: Module not found.'

I'm running 64bit Jaunty.

Same problem with Jaunty final, upgraded from Intrepid Ibex. I was able
to install it issuing dpkg --force-overwrite -i
/var/cache/apt/archives/splashy_0.3.13-3ubuntu1_i386.deb. It won't work
either, but after passing the string vga= to the kernel line in
menu.lst i was able to see again a splash screen.

[Bug 366711] Re: 3G Broadband card is recognized but internetconnection does not work

2009-04-25 Thread Jacques Botha
I don't know if it is the same problem, but I've got a Dell e6500 with
built in 3G, network-manager in Jaunty recognizes the card and is
willing to configure a "Mobile Broadband" network for it.

When I try to connect to it, it tell me it couldn't, yet, if I look at
the logs, I see it authenticate and get an IP address, and then it
disconnects.

If I use wvdial from a terminal, it connects and works !

[Bug 350776] Re: jockey backend crashed when trying to install nvidia driver

2009-04-25 Thread zulu
Follow up to my above comment: Disabling the local cdrom repository in
my Synaptic settings seems to have worked around this problem.

To summarize:
-- go to System->Administration->Synaptic Package
Manager->Settings->Repositories and uncheck the "cdrom with Ubuntu 9.04
'Jaunty Jackalope' checkbox.
-- killed 'cdrom' process that was hung above
-- Run System->Preferences->Appearance->Visual Effects to use "Extra" and
trigger the driver search. Waited for a few minutes; saw some activity in 'top'
-- rebooted after it was done

After reboot, nVidia driver works, and I can change my Appearance ->
Visual Effects settings.

I did notice my wireless connection (wlan0; Intel PRO/Wireless 5300 AGN
[Shiloh] using 'iwlagn' driver ) had trouble right after I did this,
and I had to disable and re-enable it in Network Manager before it
finally reconnected. Not sure if this is related, but that's what I
observed.

[Bug 356279] Re: openoffice 'send document as email' should use xdg-email and does not work by default for Thunderbird

2009-04-25 Thread Markus Drexelius
I have the same problem after upgrading to Ubuntu 9.04: when I choose
"Files --> Send --> Document as email" it now opens evolution instead of
my mail program "Thunderbird". In the "preferred applications" is
Thunderbird selected, so OO should use THunderbird and not evolution.

In ubuntu 8.10 this worked properly.
Thanks,
Markus

[Bug 331369] Re: regression vs. notification-daemon: positioning when multiple screens are available

2009-04-25 Thread fishor
@d2globalinc
Stop to bother people with this. After years with linux i learned one thing:
only you responsible for people you converted to linux. Microsoft need you,
because you pay money. If you do not pay, microsoft will die. Linux do not need
you, but probably you need linux, so make it better. If you need a cheep
replacement for windows, you on wrong place here.

[Bug 367148] [NEW] upgraded intrepid 8.10 to jaunty 9.04 via Update Manager - SB0240P device with ALSA - all audio is skipping and delayed

Public bug reported:

DURING UPGRADE - rec'd warning (paraphrasing here) "There was a problem
installing linux kernel 2.6.28-11-generic. You may want to report a

Audio Device: Audigy 2 Platinum [SB0240P] After upgrade to Jaunty all
audio sounds jumbled like it was delayed and skipping. Everything works
fine booting with 2.6.27-14.

To the crew: I think I have included required extended information but
am somewhat of a noob so feel free to request more info [ or complain :D

[Bug 298389] Re: Synaptic hangs when trying to save prefrences

2009-04-25 Thread Sridhar
I have the exact same problem. Upgraded to the Jaunty release this evening;
since the upgrade noticed that Synaptic hangs indefinitely if you try to modify
preferences and click either Ok or Apply.
Also noticed that CPU usage is extremely high after doing this and the only way
out is to kill Synaptic.

Any help here? Does anyone have a work around? I've tried some of the
solutions posted including reinstalling synaptic, moving the
/root/.synaptic folder etc - nothing has worked so far.

Thanks

[Bug 366262] Re: Desktop is completely unresponsive after Jaunty upgrade

2009-04-25 Thread aras
I just did a fresh install today. I can reproduce this error.
There is no desktop icons. Right click or left drag on the desktop does not
display anything.
When there is a CD in one of my cd drives I can not run nautilus (in the
terminal I get segmentation fault as soon as I run it).
If there is no CD in that drive nautilus runs fine.
But I never get my desktop icons or right click back, even when nautilus runs.

I'll try making another user and post the results.

I'v attached some log files of when nautilus crashes. This is the first
time I created these logs, so if there is something missing please let
me know how to improve them.

Thanks

[Bug 350776] Re: jockey backend crashed when trying to install nvidia driver

2009-04-25 Thread zulu
I encountered the same problem in 9.04 after trying to change
Appearance settings. Hardware is nVidia 160m in Dell E6500. I've always
hated nVidia's stance on open source; this just brings back bad
memories.

I noticed this in my pstree:

 ├─jockey-backend─┬─cdrom───mount
 │ └─{jockey-backend}

and top showed:

PID USER PR NI VIRT RES SHR S %CPU %MEMTIME+ COMMAND

 3885 root 20 0 16664 1740 1452 R 24 0.0 8:55.71 cdrom

 3790 root 20 0 180m 70m 16m S 14 0.9 4:43.00 jockey-backend

 2529 messageb 20 0 22064 1792 808 S6 0.0 2:42.00 dbus-daemon

So I disabled 'local cdrom' in my Synaptic settings and retried. At
first it didn't work, but then I realized the above 'cdrom' process was
still running. So I killed it, and this time it seems to work (at least
it downloads and installed). I'm about to reboot and confirm.

[Bug 366607] Re: Doesn't work, if path to .img file contains spaces.

2009-04-25 Thread barney_1
I have the same problem. I fixed this in the python code by
encapsulating the source file in double quotes. This way it passes both
the file check as will as the "dd" command. I no longer have any
trouble writing images that have a space in the path.

Please let me know if I generated this patch file correctly and if this
is the appropriate manner in which to submit this fix. Thanks!

[Bug 366170] Re: Upgrading to Jaunty breaks rt61pci wireless

2009-04-25 Thread Andrew
Okay, I spake to soon. The rt61 drivers work only for a bit then they
stop responding. Sometimes I have an IP address, sometimes not. Either
way only rebooting fixed it.

I managed to find the Windows XP 64 bit drivers out there and used them with
ndiswrapper
I used this HOWTO:
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=564419

And then I had to put this in my /etc/network/interfaces:

iface wlan0 inet dhcp
  wireless-essid myhiddenessid
  wireless-mode Managed
  pre-up wpa_supplicant -Dwext -iwlan0 -c/etc/wpa_supplicant.conf -B
-f/var/log/wpa_supplicant.wlan0.log
  post-down killall -q wpa_supplicant

Without the "Managed", it defaults to Auto and will fail to associate
with my AP.

I found the extractable drivers at driverguide. The filename was:
C54Ri_C54RC_DRV_WHQL_V3.01.00.exe

Even though an EXE it unzips fine. I used the rt61.inf in the WINX64
directory.

So far it is working, hopefully this one stays up.

Hopefully the rt2x00 + rt61pci can be fixed and start working again.
Really a shame that it was working great in Intrepid but it is now not
working.

[Bug 367139] [NEW] 9.04 - Volume Controls not working on Thinkpad X41

2009-04-25 Thread Mig
Public bug reported:

I just upgraded to Ubuntu 9.04. The dedicated volume control keys (up,
down, mute) no longer work on my IBM Thinkpad X41. They do not register
on the keyboard shortcuts menu. They worked perfectly fine on 8.04 and
8.10

[Bug 130979] Re: vbetool 100% cpu usage on resume

2009-04-25 Thread Jeremy Huddleston
I also notice "vbetool post" consuming 100% CPU during resume. See this
bug report for more info on the specific problem, but there's an oops
before vbetool gets run, so vbetool's hangup may be an artifact of
another bug (but it should still not sit and spin).

[Bug 249123] Re: Hardy Heron locks up

2009-04-25 Thread jdacronym
Well, it's happened again, this time on Xfce. I could still move cursor
and windows around and top and the toolbars were still updating, but
unfortunately everything else was shot. Then the toolbars died as well.
Couldn't even open a terminal to shut down the machine or kill any
processes.

However, top was open, so I was able to write down the top four cpu-
users:

ksoftirqd/1
dd
klogd
firefox

ksoftirqd in particular was using up to 60%, dd anywhere from 30%-50%,
klogd usually around 30s, and firefox about 15% or so (there were
actually two instances running, on account of my clicking the firefox
launcher twice before the machine hung.

[Bug 367136] [NEW] xset -r causes loss of control of keyboard

2009-04-25 Thread John Parchem
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xorg

Using Ubuntu 9.04 64-Bit.

"xset -r" or "xset r off" (see man xset) is a command which is supposed
to turn off the keyboard repeat. However, when I run this in Ubuntu
9.04 64-bit, it causes an endless stream of enter key inputs instead (as
if you just held down the enter key). I've tried this on two different
machines with the same results. Here are the steps to reproduce:

1) Open two terminal windows

2) In the first terminal window, enter "xset r" (no quotes) but don't
hit the enter key yet. You'll need this command already typed in to
gain control of the keyboard later when the X server goes into a loop of
enter keys making typing of commands in the terminal at that point
otherwise impossible.

3) In the second terminal window, enter "xset -r" (no quotes) and hit
the enter key. Observe that instead of the repeat being turned off for
the keyboard, a steady rapid stream of enter keypresses occur which
makes typing into anything impossible because the enter keystrokes are
interfering with whatever you are typing.

4) Now go back to the first terminal window and press enter to execute
the command "xset r" which will turn the repeat back on. At this point,
you should have regained control of keyboard input again.

[Bug 367137] [NEW] virt-manager freezes when applying hardware change

2009-04-25 Thread Connor Imes
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: virt-manager

I've been trying to decrease my number of CPUs to a XP guest from 2 to 1, but
when I go to Apply, virt-manager freezes. The change is not committed to the
xml file in /etc/libvirt/qemu/
After closing the frozen windows, I cannot reconnect to qemu:///system from
anywhere. I'm not sure if the problem is specifically with virt-manager,
perhaps it is with libvirt-bin. Restarting kvm and/or libvirt-bin does not
solve the problem, I must reboot.

file installs is now done automatically by dpkg. Removes
 lintian warning.

  * debian/control.in: Update package descriptions to fix lintian
warnings.

  * debian/patches/14_octave-3.0-fixes.diff:

[Bug 363892] Re: No sound in Dell Inspiron 1420 in Jaunty

2009-04-25 Thread bcasanov
Thank you, I finally have sound back! I removed all the snd-hda-intel
model quirks from all the files I could find in /etc/modprobe.d/* and
rebooted! I tested my sound in the Sound preferences, and it works for
all the sound playback areas.

[Bug 358426] Re: Unable to start the settings manager gnome-settings-daemon after updating Intrepid

2009-04-25 Thread Paul Whipp
aarnet.edu.au was the result of my selecting 'select best server'. I've
never had any intention of using 'non official' packages.

~ $ sudo apt-get install gstreamer0.10-plugins-base=0.10.21-3ubuntu0.1
[sudo] password for paul:
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree
Reading state information... Done
gstreamer0.10-plugins-base is already the newest version.
0 upgraded, 0 newly installed, 0 to remove and 0 not upgraded.

if you are certain this is the result of my configuration being corrupt
or non standard can you -

Tell me how I can know what servers to trust for packages - I assumed
the 'select best server' would only return 'official' servers.

Tell me if you think its a good idea I just upgrade to 9.04 and hope
that the problem disappears in the process.

Thanks!

[Bug 367126] [NEW] node name is /dev/dri/card0 fails

2009-04-25 Thread JamesDCarroll
Public bug reported:

I installed Ibex and updated everything. Then installed the ATI drivers
from the repository. I did the aticonfig -initial - f command but it
complained that I didn't have an xorg.conf. Even though I did I still
rebuilt it with sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg (which I found in an
Ubuntu forum) and sudo dpkg-reconfigure -phigh xserver-xorg which I
found in one of the logs.

It won't boot into anything but low resolution and at the bottom of the
log is this:

drmOpenDevice: node name is /dev/dri/card0
drmOpenDevice: open result is -1, (No such device or address)
drmOpenDevice: open result is -1, (No such device or address)
drmOpenDevice: Open failed

Saw signal 11. Server aborting.

Here are some files that I've seen you ask for in other bugs.

Thanks!!

[Bug 367125] [NEW] [Request] Display all info on one line

2009-04-25 Thread aeosynth
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: music-applet

It seems silly seeing only one piece of information at a time when I
have the space to display it all, so I'd like the option to do so. The
Firefox extension FoxyTunes behaves like this, and scrolls right and
left when there actually isn't enough room.

Thanks!

I can also confirm this bug.

It works after I make sure none of the path has spaces.
